Ok, you may never have stated, but you brought up Sound Choice giving the indication that he may have had Sound Choice discs loaded in it or were trying to find out from them if it was legal to have them on there - which is why the Sound Choice replies came back to you.
I also don't remember you mentioning (I may have missed it) that he didn't have the system in the bar yet.
So settle down! ![wave ](./images/smilies/emot-wave.gif)

Lonman, you may be right (and maybe not) regarding the depth of the information I had provided on the Karaoke Bar's CAVS system.
It may have been in a PM I had with DBK1009 (who also knows the place) that we were joking about how the CAVS machine has not shown up since the spring when it was "announced" that the bar had purchased it. Perhaps it was never purchased? In fact, the old JVC machine in the place broke last week and was replaced with a 3-drawer Vocopro. Something I can't believe would have been purchased for long-term use?
Nonetheless, I never implied the Karoke Bar or any CAVs system had SC tracks LEGALLY loaded onto it, nor that SC was IN ANY WAY involved with CAVs.

As to settling down, I'm trying. I am a salesman. All I have is my time. Chris, the salesman at Sound Choice was very gracious in sharing his time with me. We went over my copy protected discs issue. We discussed the warning on the Sound Choice label regarding public performance. We discussed related copyright/ownership issues. AND THEN WE DISCUSSED THE CAVS SYSTEM, MY PLANS AND THE POSSIBILITY I WOULD PURCHASE A CAVS. AND WE DISCUSSED COPYRIGHT MATTERS REGARDING CAVS AND THE LOCAL KARAOKE BAR. WHICH HE KNOWS IS IN FT LAUDERDALE
1. HE MUST NOW THINK I AM A COMPLETE MORON THAT LIES TO THIS FORUM ABOUT WHAT HE TOLD ME AND HE MIGHT IGNORE ME IN THE FUTURE DEDUCING HIS TIME WITH ME TODAY WAS POORLY SPENT.
2. SINCE THERE IS ONLY ONE "KARAOKE BAR" IN ALL OF FT LAUDERDALE, DO YOU THINK SOUND CHOICE MAY NOT GO LOOKING FOR IT SINCE FLIPPER INFORMED THEM HE HAS A CAVS SYSTEM UP AND RUNNING WITH SC TRACKS ON IT?

They aren't going to go after the bar. They are the originators of Kapa & have found it hard & costly to prosecute the places that use the CAVS & computer. They have stated that they need to get the original copyright holders involved to make it work all the time. They have taken down some large scale pirates, but nothing of lately - like the last few years.
RIAA is rumoured to be starting to crack down on illegal karaoke systems, but we'll see.

Eric
The only conversation I had with Chris was exactly what I stated. I did not name names, bars or locations...that's not my style. Relax...you can call them with no worries. LOL Hey! no ill intentions meant here at all.
If you reread your statement and try to read it as KJ would you may see why others may have wanted to clarify your statement. The bar owner in question's situation kept changing as to preloaded vs owning the discs etc. It became quite confusing.
I called sound choice because I really wanted to know what their position was and wanted to hear it first hand. There is so much mis-information regarding this subject floating around I wanted to know what they thought. It was not a personal attack on you. Personally I feel that I have learned quite a bit by calling them and Cavs today. I would have never done that if you hadn't brought up questions in my mind by posting what you did. For that I thank you!! ![worship :worship:](./images/smilies/emot-worship.gif) Thats how we all learn from this great forum and each other.
I also called Cavs USA and they told me that they did not want to deal with Sound Choice on a preloaded or download situation and had their reasons for this.
I did have and interesting conversation with them about the legalities of their factory preloaded units, and their download site for Cavs users. I'm fairly confident that they are squeaky clean on the licensing and royalties paid to the proper folks. Apparently they set aside 9% of all sales volume on downloads and preloads and it is all digitally tracked and wired via internet to the proper authorities handling the royalties. They have an international License for all songs that originate from them regarless of the manufacturers license. So for example even if chartbuster has not paid their royalties or fees, their license will (something to that effect).
This is only on units purchased directly from Cavs!
If we can lets bring this back down to a discussion level as that is the spirit in which I'm trying to deliver it in. Sometimes written word can be mistaken. Obviously there is a little of this going on between both of us.
I also found out some other interesting information with regards to legal use but cannot comment on it right now as I do not know how much of it is accurate and it would probably cause quite a stirr here. Apparently 2007 should prove very interesting for the entire karaoke industry.

The RCMP is doing it in Canada with or without the copyright holders involved. They don't need them. If someone is selling or using pirated stuff (doesn't matter what it is cds, books, car parts, clothing) they just go in make the arrests and charge. Right now they're going after the big guys, but sooner or later the boys (and girls since the head is a woman) in red may be marching into your local watering hole.

Well, Kellyoke, it seems that after investigating the matter, Flipper (and I don't want to put words in his mouth) agrees with my evaluation of the potential legality of a CAVS show.
And there is nothing inferior about the quality (around here) of the CAVS equipment I am exposed to.

My cable company has Sound Choice karaoke songs on it.
I could record it right from the TV.

To share a story on a related matter that just happened in the last two weeks. A friend of mine wanted a copy of a particular song. I didn't have the song and ordered it on a custom CD for her as a Christmas present. The very day I gave it to her, someone else gave her a copy of the song (Sound Choice). My track was from ASK (All-star Karaoke).
I was told that the other copy had been downloaded for free. Curiousity getting the better of me, I inquired as to where? The person who did the downloading gave me the web address. The downloaded copy, on the surface, was perfect in graphic quality.
I checked out the website. I really couldn't tell much about it because there is a sign-on to get in. What I do know is that there is a $65 lifetime membership. Then you have (as advertised) access to over 400,000 songs that can be downloaded for free! I imagine there is a member upload involved, but I don't really know. And I don't want to ask too many questions or I'll sound like a cop.
So, I guess there are even bigger fish in the sea right now than KJ's with pirated copies. I mean this website has got to be a big deal to the manu's.

I think I know which site you are referring to and I'm amazed the site is still up and running. If it's the same one they are totally illegal. When they do shut them down anyone who has done business with them will be easily tracked by IP address and email.
It would seem like that site would be an easy target if the manufacturers wanted to go after them.

GOOD, I hate pirates.
BTW, my In-laws, who used to be in the the wife and I, decided to go off on there own. THey wanted to work less. But anyway, they were bragging about how they found an onmline site where they could order discs for $1 per song. ANd mid you, that they are realy big against pirates also.
They ordered about 20 disc from that website wich were all cutom made, like you can order aa custom disc from SC with the songs you want on it. THey got the disc in the mail, and they were OH SO EXCITED since they got them for SOOO CHEAP. So I was at their show one nite, and checked out the discs. THEy had paper labels on them, you could even see the "memorex" wording bleeding through the label. IT had discs from every manu under the sun (SC,CB, nutech, SGB, and a couple priddis songs). When I pointed that out to them, they didn't seem to care much. THey assume since they "bought" the discs, they are leagal. I dunno, makes me wonder

Yeah there are a couple of sites out there that fit that description.
Are they legal ![no ](./images/smilies/emot-shakehead.gif) but those sites have been operating for like 2-3 years without getting hit by the karaoke police ![Shocked ](./images/smilies/icon_eek.gif)

Twansenne. Now you've got me thinking. On the label of the first and only custom disk I have bought is the name of retailer; the words "Custom CDG Disk"; the retailers web address; my name; my order #; the Disk# I assigned to the thing when I ordered it. The label is not glued but is part of the disk.
There is nothing on the label regarding the copyrights.
So, was my copy legal? Is it no more legal than the one that was loaded for free off of the internet? I just know mine cost a lot more than the downloaded version. I'd like to think it's legal I purchased it from a mainstream karaoke store.
Anybody know about this subject in the way of sure facts? I will contact my local karaoke store after the holiday regarding this question. They offer custom disks that start at about $8 a track. I didn't pay anywhere near that! The local store is also on the net.

Why would anyone want to pirate a SGB or Nu-Tech disc? ![Don't Know :dontknow:](./images/smilies/dontknow.sml.gif) That's just funny in itself.

I can't remember which company it was - at least 6-7 years ago, either Pocket Songs or Priddis, but they used to offer custom discs & they came from the manu with paper printed labels with very generic print font - black ink on white labels.

So, what I have is probably legal? I really thought so because I have a very good reason to believe that the vendor who made the custom All-Star disk for me is some how a part of All-star Karaoke.
