When I had a contest, I had members of bands as judges, but non of them could be available on every night of the contest due to there gig schedule. But the good thing about mixing up the judges, is that people feel they have a fair chance. You can also try to have as many of these different judges be there for the final contest. With my contest, the band members wanted to be there for the finals after being in the preliminaries, and said they enjoyed it. That was about the only thing in my contest that went completely smooth.
And just to let you know, most KJs are against contests, because they are a HUGE pain in the butt, no matter how well you plan it out. And you just don't get paid enough for that kind of aggrevation. :D
Good luck with your contest!!
Yea I am seeing the whole pain in the butt thing . And I keep telling mister Bar Owner...you realize how much work this is for me right??!! But I had a feeling it was gonna be a pain...couldn't just have a little in house contest...no had to be something else.I do know some band people so I will definately keep that in mind.Thankyou

DOn't mind at all, that's why they are there. If someone is CRAZY lol enough to run a contest, I hope it actualy is a fair one, and the best way to make it fiar is buy having a defined set of rules on what the judges are judging on.

I don't mind running a contest either. I was just trying to show both sides of it. I was a karaoke singer and then worked as a KJ for a company and now own my own KJ/DJ business. I have been in contests and have seen how contests are run and just wanted to give a little insight on how I run one of my contests. I also have a Bingo karaoke contest. The one people seem to love the most is the on where anyone that comes to our show and sings, has a chance to win. I will say it again....If it wasn't for our average singer we would not have a job. I have singers that are unbelievable, in fact I have people such as someone who tours with the Platters, back up singer for Milli-Vinilli (DONT SAY IT, SHE IS UNBELIEVABLE AND DOESN'T LIP SINC) singer from The Doors that come to our show but you know what.... That person who comes every week to relax and sing the song they probably sing in the shower is the one that makes what I do all worth it.

Oh I agree. Sounds like we started this karaoke thing about the same way. For many years I was strictly a singer..filled in for my karaoke gal a couple times...then got offered a job. Last year we bought our system. Heck I have some regular "bad" singers . I still love them. They come, they drink , they sing...I am a happy girl.
As long as they are having a good time I am too.

I have to agree with not necessarily using the same judges every round too. Problem with that is people are only human & have likes & dislikes - even so called impartial judges - not only in karaoke, but in many type of judged situations. So someone sings a song that the judges don't like for some reason, it will affect the outcome as they may automatically judge it lower. Different judges will hear different things & even though it's not supposed to be based on personal likes/dislikes - you HAVE to take it into consideration. So if you have the same judges every time, & someone keeps missing getting to be qualified because of their song choice, it will go back to the promoter of the contest - you!

I have been accused of rigging the contest. :O
I have seen regulars not come back for 6 months.
I have seen people want to beat up judges.
The place will be full until the second the money is given away. Then it will look like a ghost town. You will not have gained any new customers when it's all said and done. There will be people with hurt feelings that may not be back. 99% of the singers I talk to hate contests. It takes away from their singing time. And most of them just sing for fun and don't want to be in a contest anyway. All of these things you will find out after it's too late. I'll never do another contest, even if my life depended on it. I'd tell them to kill me first.

It does not cut in to my regular singers. It is for my regular singers. They are still in a contest persay but they are kind of taking a gamble as well. If they come early and sign up and make the 10, then they stay all night to see if their name gets drawn. If not the come back the next week to try again. I only do this every so often because we also have a nightly raffle called "Sing for your supper". Every singer gets a raffle ticket every time they sing. Twice a night we draw a ticket and that singer gets a gift certificate to the casino restaurant. Do I need to do these things to keep singers or get new ones? NO! They just think it is a cool added bonus to a night of relaxing and having fun with us. Some of you sound like you need to retire or something because you don't sound like you really like what you do whether you are successful or not. Life is to short for all that crap. Believe me, on minute you are here and the next your not. I have learned in the past year 1/2 after loosing my 16 year old daughter that life is not only about being successful but also about making yourself as well as others smile. Try it...You might like it!
You have some great ideas!! hope you don't mind if I steal a few.
Wow...sorry about your daughter, I have felt the same way since suddenly losing my mother at 18. These things seem to change people in one of two ways..you either decide life is too short, live it to the fullest or you become jaded...glad you see it the way you do!
Ya know I got into this KJ thing basically to keep it in the area. I quickly found out just how much work it is. Although the extra $$ is nice..I think that once it becomes all about the money it will no longer be any fun, so I try not to think of this as a job but a hobby with the benefits of a little extra $$.

I have many more ideas if you ever wanna get some more ideas let me know. Thank you for your kind words regarding my angel. Brittany would have turned 18 on November 29 of this year. I am sorry about your mom as well.
Don't get me wrong about making money. This is what we do to make a living now. I was a nurse for a long time and my husband a chef but we always wanted to have our own business and both of us love music and love to have fun as well as help others have fun. Now we own our own company and are growing every month. Just recently we were able to buy another system. Kind of an upgrade from the first. I am also in the process of possibly going from just a Karaoke/DJ company and will be a full blown Production Company (with time). It still comes down to ours singers/following in the end. If they didn't exsist neither would we.
Merry Christmas to you and Happy New Year!
Hugs- Lynette

Wow you are ambitious. I would so love to do that...but the hubby loves farming, been doing it on this farm since he was 10. You can not farm and do karaoke full time. Good luck on the company.. I have a feeling by the way things are going for you it will not only happen but will be a success.
Ideas are always welcome..I am not that creative!
Merry Christmas!!
