Good Morning and Happy Holidays to all karaoke hosts/hostesses.  I need a little advice ...

Here's my current setup ...

Behringer (600w) powered mixer
Behringer (1400w) amplifier
Cerwin Vega PSX15 mains

I run my show on a computer.  Blah, blah ...

My question is this.  I had a woofer stop working on one of the PSX15s.  Just stopped.  Does this happen sometimes? It's in the shop now (as it's still under warranty).  Haven't heard from them yet, so not sure what the actual problem is.

In the same light, if I'm not powering correctly, I run my 15s through the amplifier (not the mixer).  Am I giving them the proper power?  Do I need more amp?  Less?  Just asking since I've only been gigging for about 6 months and this is the first real snafu I've run up against.

Assuming those are the 3 way PSX153?  Those speakers look to need about 350 watts per speaker into 8 ohms.

You didn't mention models of the mixer/amp or amp.
Since they only make 1 1400 watt amp, I will assume it's the EP1500 which is rated 1400 watts bridged into 4 ohms.  That amp pushes about 260 watts per channel into 8 ohms.  About 100 watts underpowered technically for those speakers.  You'd be better off with the EP2500 amp - this one actually is more powerful by 100 watts, but you will tend to blow a speaker with not enough power over having too much.

As far as the mixer amps, I will only go by one of theirs that are rated 600 watts - which by looking I can't see 1 that they currently make that states 600 watts.  I see one that says 500 watts (PMH2000) which is rated 180 watts into 8 ohms, very much underpowered for those speakers.  The only other powered boards they have  currently state 800 watts.  These are all rated 200 watts into 4 ohms - they don't even list an 8 ohm rating which will be closer to 150 or less watts per channel.  These mixers are also very under for those particular speakers.  

If you are needing the volume, you'll need the proper amps to match the speakers.  Turning up the volume with an amp that isn't powerful enough for the speakers will kill the speakers eventually - as you already found out.

You say you hook the speakers up through the amp & not the mixer, do you run the mixer/amp into the amp via the pre-amp (line/main) outputs?

Yes, main out to amp, amp to speakers.  I have the Ep1500.  I need to get a 2500.  Would the woofer just stop working like that?  Is it in the driver?  I thought blown speakers still produced, but crackly crap sound.  ??

Yes the woofer can just stop working or it can still produce crackly sound - it depends on the extent of the voice coil damage that is done.

actually if you bridged the output of you current amp and ran one channel from it , and ran the second channel from another bridged ep1500 you would have more power for less money. I only say this because trade in would dissapoint you.

A few years back had a speaker JUST STOP-
It wasn't blown but the CONNECTIONS inside had severed
and just needed a GOOD SOLDERED job!!!!

I've been told by the manufacturer (Cerwin Vega) that some of these had crossover problems, and they've suggested sending the unit (minus the cabinet) back to them for replacement.

Does anyone else use Prostax 15" 3-ways?  I'm in the market to buy another, if anyone is selling.  Thanks.
