I saw another thread on this and yes, this Sat I'll be doing my first gig too. I'm filliing in for the regular KJ who owns the company. I've done a few with another KJ but this will be my first as THE KJ. Wish me luck-- any thoughts?

first of all, congrat! now, make sure you run a fair rotation and make sure to keep the audience involved by asking them to calp before AND after the singers. I usually inject a few "catchphrases" such as
"C'mon folks! I want those hands to bleed at the end of the night!"
if there is very little clapping i pull the buffer music off and say "okay, folks! don't make me stop this bar! now gimme some hand clapping!"
one i particularly like when a lady is going to sing "alright guys, give it up for *****, she's workin' hard for ya on the main stage! c'mon fellas, she's doin' it for your tips and your tips alooooonnnnneee!" then i add "oops, i thought i was at my day job there for a second!"...everyone laughs and claps wildly after that.

Those are good phrases. I'm always looking for new words to get people to clap. I use: Put your hands together for ____, or let's here it for ________, give em some love out there and show you r appreciation for a great performance for ___. Some nights no matter how crowded people just don't want to clap.

Good luck
Arrive Early to make sure all equipment is working and your set up is ideal.
Do a sound check
Put your books out early and walk the crowd for request slips early.
Speak slow and clear when announcing
Keep good track of the rotation --YOUR SINGERS WILL
Don't sing TOO much as the KJ
Have Fun !!!
( have a shot or two before showtime)

i also use, "c'mon folks! give him the clap!"
or
"Alright people, if you take your left palm and drop it onto your right palm with some force it will make a sound. that's called appreciation!"
or
"let's give her a little right hand, left hand action to let her know we love her"
or
"you may as well clap for her now, folks, because you're gonna be in too much awe to clap when she's done!"

Since I'll soon be starting my first gig, this is a great thread. A lot of good ideas.
I must be getting old, though, XX. I didn't get the one about "tips alooooonneee"?
I've never liked the one about giving him/her the "clap".
I always felt that a KJ that didn't encourage a response from the audience wasn't doing the job; and I've run into several who don't!
HOWEVER, I've never encountered a single KJ that applauds at the end of a performance!

I applaud, hoot and holler and sometimes give a yahoo! I especially do it if the audience doesn't. I feel horrible when a singer doesn't get some kind of response.

We have an APPLAUSE screen that we IMMEDIATELY switch to after the song lyrics are done ..... and we always in a VERY "impressed" voice..... say something to the effect of "Oh yea, that was "Shawn" singing Bon Jovi for ya ..... Thank you VERY MUCH shawn!!!
Usually if you as the KJ are enthusiastic ...... and SOUND like YOU appreciated and liked the performance.... the crowd "catches" your enthusiasm.
Lots of other good ones here too .... :)

Thanks for the enccouragement folks.
I have no issue with public speaking. For me doing it the first time the catch will be running the equipment smoothly and keeping the rotation right.
As my day job boss is fond of saying-- Figure it out.

you will never find me NOT applauding the end of a performance. Regardless of how good/bad someone sounded, acted etc. it was still an effort and that's what we like to reward!

Yep..it was me with the 1st thread. I booked weekly now. More coming in as well. Trying to turn the image of this particular bar around a little. It's been very up and down.......but it's a consistant gig. Best of luck to ya & act like you've been doing it forever. Also, don't be TOO nice, you'll end up pissing more people off that way. I mean if you start trying to please everybody and not please the majority of the crowd......it ends up bad. You have to stay in control! MrD

Just an updated and thanks for the good wishes.
Gig went fine. I goofed on a few singers-- played wrong song or didn't switch monitor/player. I'm such a goof. 8-) All, in all, I think it went given I've never done something like this before.
Got a few tips from a few people. An offer for a kiss (from an attactive lady) <blush>. Witnessed what I thought was a hooker working the crowed and showing her boobs -- twilight zone that was.
And, I had to help a guy out singing. A few guys put in joke songs for their buddies. One guy sang the 1st two lines of "bust a move." As the crowed was dancing and getting into it, I simply did the song for him since I didn't want to kill the "getting one's groove on" mood... although I encouraged him to sing-- he didn't, I did.

It sounds like you did awesome. :oh yeah:
Being a karaoke host you get to watch and deal with a lot of different types of people. You get good at reading people and how to handle them. It sounds like you got exposed to a lot your first night. Keep up the good work.
