Another song I always loved, especially when the Byrds played it was Dylan's "Mr Tambourine Man", but to be honest, I never gave a second thought to what those lyrics stood for. What is a Tambourine man ? Except for lyrics such as "Take me on a trip upon your magic swirling ship, all my senses have been stripped..etc" seems obvious it's LSD related (as were so many songs mid-60's on)

Steven, I bet you know this one.
Who played the guitar solo on Donovan's 'Hurdy Gurdy Man'?

That reminds me of one of the earlier episodes of the Simpsons when Bart handed out out music to the church members that was a re-write of that song called... "In the Garden of Eden". So that's where the writers got it from!
Sometimes, occasionally, a kid (or an adult) will sing a song with a bad-ish word in it, and I'll kind of jokingly say "bleep" over the mic. Most of the kids wouldn't have said the word anyway, but it still amuses the audience to edit 'em like that sometimes.
I sing "I'm Too Sexy" every once in awhile, and will change that one lyric to.. "Poor puddy.. poor puddy taaatt". Also like to say something like "Here's Blah-blah singing Don't Cha by the Meow-sy Cat Dolls!". Still feel guilty saying the "P" word.. even if it is talking about a " Felis Domesticus"

James,
Since this is the honor system, and I can't recall off the top of my head. Let's let Lonman answer this one. I think I might've heard something way back, but have since forgotten, or what I heard couldn't be confirmed..Something of the like. Looking it up would be cheating. I don't remember who played Hurdy Gurdy man. Just recall it being one of the first songs I learned on my Univox Tremelo amp around 1964. Nice tremelo.
Go ahead Lonnie. I don't recall the answer, or never heard this fact.

Cool deal, I let Lonman go for it then. But when you read the answer it's gonna be one of those, smack the forehead I should've known, type deals.

I did read it James. Not sure it's a confirmed fact (depending on musician you are speaking of) originally planned guitarist, guitarist stated, or guitarist that the stated guitarist claimed actually sat in.
Let's wait for Lonnie though. Either way, what I heard YEARS back was the guitarist Donovan hoped would sit in WAS playing, not the actual guitarist who is said to have sat in, or the other possibility. This has been refuted and stated as an area surrounded with alot of "bad info".

Quote: The title was supposed to be "In The Garden Of Eden." Someone had written "In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida," possibly while drunk, on a demo copy. A record company executive saw it and decided to use it as the title, since it sounded mystical and Eastern spirituality was big at the time, with The Beatles going to India and The Rolling Stones experimenting with Indian instruments. _________________ Lonnie Karaoke Scene Forum Moderator

Speaking of older bands. Did Grand Funk end up disbanding shortly after "Flight of the Phoenix" where it was evident a few of the members became Christian ? Perhaps it was just Mark Farner who was "Born again" dunno

Heck No ! There are other squares just like you . Some are so "out've it" they don't even use the terms "beautiful" "Groovy" "Peachy-Keen""Far out" or "Spiffy" these days. Not to mention the crappy quality stores are carrying these days. When was the last time you saw a quality garment made of 100% polyester like a leisure suit ? Or even a Quiana Nylon shirt with a city skyline on it ? and what's with the difficulty finding patent leather square toed boots these days, button-fly hiphugger bell bottoms, or real Pewter Jewelry ? Have you noticed any Peter Max Black light posters in quality art stores lately ? HECK NO ! Just insipid stuff that doesn't have phosphorescent hot colors. Bars have become so cheap they no longer want to pay for mirror balls, strobe lights, and Altec stacks to play Sister Sledge, Chic, and KC and the Sunshine band the way it's intended to be LOUD. Anyway, I need to run. It's almost dawn, and I still have to decide which leather pants I'm wearing with my new Neru shirt. First week of the new job at the record store and Frampton Comes Live has loads of babes coming into the shop. This one chick said she has some really amazing Blonde Leb. It's sort've a drag tho. This record store owner isn't selling bongs and pipes any longer. The law is getting uptight. taking away our rights. Only thing safe to do these days is go out and get drunk. Of course I hate to drive &hitfaced because the Ford Gran Torino has lousy visibility out the back, and the cops get pissed when I'm drunk and driving so slow that I don't even see them to let them pass me.
Hey BD, One last thing. You know any area smokeshops that carry Pucks and Ganish Beedes ? Can't find them that easily these days.

And you would be correct sir. I'm fairly certain that on the original album no credits are given, but on Donovan's Greatest Hits, Page is given credit. Just like on Alice Coopers tune 'Hello Hooray' Marc Bolan of T.Rex plays guitar with no credit, just as he did on Bowie's original version of 'Prettiest Star' which was omitted for the Mick Ronson version on the album.
Steven, yes after the breakup of Grandfunk, Farner put out several solo albums which failed miserably. His born again image didn't hold up quite as well as his 'working all day, making up nickel bags' image he had with Grandfunk. But that was one helluva band in it's time. I still like to listen to their tunes on occasion, same as I do the original James Gang with Joe Walsh. Luckily for Walsh he moved on to the multi-million dollar deal when he joined up with the Eagles. But even being in the Eagles, Walsh is still remembered best for his solo tune 'Rocky Mountain Way'.
Karaoke Kelley, Deep Purple was also one of my favorite bands. Ian Gillan was a huge vocal influence on me, not as much as David Byron of Uriah Heep, but a close second. Rod Evans, Purples original singer who tuned such classics as 'Hush' and 'Kentucky Woman' went on to front probably my favorite band of that era, Captain Beyond. Captain Beyond was best known for it's jaw dropping guitar work done by Rhino and Pinera......which brings us back around to the band they joined after Captain Beyonds demise.....none other than Iron Butterfly. Their best work was on the Metamorphosis album which gave them the semi hit 'Easy Rider' though not to be confused with the song of the same name by the Byrds, which also had it's fair share of drug influence songs such as '8 Miles High' and the previously mentioned Dylan tune, 'Mr. Tambourine Man'.
So there we have it, all nice and neatly wrapped. Leave it to the ole Maninblack to be able to link all the afore mentioned bands together in one lengthy post.
Just a wee bit of musical history for you folks. Hoped you enjoyed the useless yet informative trivia.
James

Good reading.
I know what ya mean about the crap mouths in karaoke. The place that use to have karaoke where I hung out had a pretty mixed crowd also.
You'd have the metalheads that would always choose songs with explicit language. (it didn't bother me though....I like metal)
Then there was the hillbilly that thought changing Charlie Daniel's "Devil Went Down To Georgia" to totally different, sexually obscene lyrical content was gonna get him laid tonight, or noticed as the next new sensation for the Blue Collar Comedy Tour.
Then there was the hillbilly whose singing was so loud, out of tune and annoying, I thought I was at the Blue Collar Comedy Tour.
Then there were the hip/hop rappers with the booty and hoes garbage...(I can't stand that crud)
And then there was me a few times singing Staind's "It's been A While" and changing the lyrics "F'd up" to "messed up" with people snickering in the audience.
One thing's for sure, karaoke brings in all kinds of personalities, and could probably make or break your gig.
Just ask Bigdog. He specifically tailored his venue to suit his own tastes and preferred following.....that's why he's so anonymously successful.
Oh, hey buddy! I couldn't resist....it just fit the dialogue. LMAO

John Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) also played bass on that very same song - ! Another very highly skilled 'session' player - probably uncredited on other albums as well.

This thread reminds me of a book called The Rock Snob's Dictionary. It's a humorous but nonetheless instructive take on "rock snobs"--people for whom the actual enjoyment of music is secondary to the accumulation of arcane knowledge about it. Actually, the authors are rock snobs themselves, so the book is self-deprecating in addition to being informative. Apparently you can tell a rock snob by their prominent use of words like "seminal" and "coruscating."

Ok, OT now--- > Zeppelin!!!! Love that band-- odd now Led Zep 1 and 2 have some really bluesy toons on them (some I think are old blues songs they covered).
Anyway, I'm now totally confused on the original intent of the thread-- doh!
Alt. Lyrics-- my favorite is "Excuse me, while I eat this fly"--- Jimmy Hendrix, Purple haze. Or, excuse me, while I kiss this guy. There's actually a site of most misunderstoon/misquoted lyrics-- (kissthisguy.com).
On explicit lyrics in songs-- if they're there, I sing 'em, if not, I don't introduce them. Some really crazy stuff I'll skip-- e.g. Disturbed- The Sickness has a really disturbing/explcit rap in the original version-- I don't sing it.
At the end of the day, its all about audience. If its all adults, they get what they get. They should necessarily expect a Karaoke adult crowd after 10 or so to be PG all the time-- some R stuff will come into the mix. I've also been to one place here in PHX that is all ages. After 10/11, the DJ will sometimes warn that explicit lyrics are in a song and say, hey its 10:30 (or whatever), little kids shouldn't be around anyway.
