I have had troubles with this bar owner in the past and do watch my butt. He has learned to trust me and knows I bring people in, so he isn't fighting karaoke anymore, but realising it is his bread and butter. He knows I have had offers to go other places. I think he is trying to make sure things are easy for me, so I don't leave.

I like the idea of locking covers. Great idea Twans and Allstar !! Does anyone have a link to a store that would have that sort of thing?

That may very well be Babs.  In such a case, maybe this guy has come around, and warmed up to you.  Since I don't want to believe everyone is dishonest, based on the info you just gave, what he did seems to be, and might very well be a nice gesture on his part because he now likes you.  If you told him how you feel, he knows, HAS warmed up to you because he considers your presence an asset, and you now have a boss who was just slow in getting to know, and trust you, I'd hate to think such a motive (once you've communicated your concerns and they have been allayed) has devious intent.  BUT, you haven't complained about your work situation in perhaps close to a year, so congrats on you and your boss reaching a mutual respect. I don't want to be the type of person who perpetually feels everyone is devious, it's not a pleasant way to go thru life.  If he assures you noone will use your equipment, I suppose you are the best judge as to how cordial he is after 3 years.  Glad you two now trust one-another.

I haven't been asked yet, but I feel the question coming. Now that the owner has mounted my speakers

As to speakers, well, for me personally if they were mounted, out've harms way, this also depends on whether I knew the ACOUSTIC gig that wished to use them, and you've communicated with them, heard them, KNOW they are careful, and very mature etc..  Assuming a group had very high output instruments NO WAY !,  but a coffeehouse gig I've lent equipment to knowing they were pretty quiet, THEY knew about clipping, and equipment, and just wanted a one-shot favor..I even lent a few guitars out that I knew were replaceable to musicians I knew, but nothing very highend, or nothing I couldn't take a risk with... I knew I could live with whatever happened.. IF, we knew each other, and liked each other, I might do a favor for other musicians..  A loud rock band, or higher output instruments such as sax, synths, bass, or ANY electric instrument that is high output such as keyboards FORGET IT, friends or not, that can cause probs for equipment..No loaned speakers or PA stuff to loud rowdy rock bands.... Mic'd acoustic guitar,  yeah, Again, THEY MUST know about clipping and they must be soft and mellow, and you of course MUST know them ..  I'd never lend out a very good acoustic guitar. Speakers or a microphone, I have, and always this is a MAYBE type thing... Just meet with them first, really know who they are... SInce you've been around there for 3 years, you pretty much know what's up.. and if something happens to your equipment, and you are helping out other performers in that particular owners bar, HE WOULD have to be understanding when your day to work came,  and your equipment was broken, many factors regarding this.  Since the speakers are mounted and out've the way, that'd allay part of my concern..Blowing speakers, well, make sure you know whoever uses them WILL NOT allow that to happen deliberately.. Things do happen however...These are tough things to give advice on Bab's.  Generally it's not a good idea to lend out equipment, HOWEVER certain types of equipment to certain gigs...Well, that's up to you.. Most important..YOU MUST KNOW THE PEOPLE using your equipment..

JMO..  I'm all for performers bartering and helping one-another WHEN possible, assuming what goes around comes around. If I were in a pinch, I know now I could be trusted with certain equipment, I would never borrow a very valuabe guitar or piece of equipment however, because I wouldn't wish to take responsibility for it in a bar environment however. Of course this is ALL built on the honor system and maturity !  You must be the judge of who is trustworthy, Sometimes you help somebody, they help you.  It ALL depends,  these are the grey areas of life.

Maybe the tech folks know more about possible probs when you lend out equipment such as speakers that I didn't cover to mature low volume performers that have a grasp of clipping, distortion, and other things that damage equipment.  If-so,  I too would like to know about such probs, and why it's NEVER good to lend out speakers because this will be a learning experience for me as well.. Things have changed signficantly since days of old regarding equipment durability... I don't know much about solid-state stuff.. I know it sounds funny, but I still ocassionally lend out tube amps, and tube stuff...

Oh, and one other thing I wish to add to this  LOL

He has come a long way in the past 3 years.

Right !   Your relationship WAS NOT this way last year with this bar owner. So I'm sort've combining threads here regarding mounted equipment in your "I think they like me" thread with this thread. I was concerned about your old bar owner who would've given Ebenezer Scrooge a run for his money..  Things have now changed so it seems.  I doubt THIS GUY would want your speakers blown either assuming you are his bread and butter.... So, Dunno.... It's all up to you.. Nothing black or white, or carved in stone..

The following comments are my opinion only....LOL

A guy comes up and ask if he can ride my bike..
my reply, 'Can I f**k your wife?'
his answer, HELL NO
well then, there ya go, end of story.

A kid comes up and ask, can I play your guitar...
My reply, do you have 1200 dollars?
his answer, HELL NO
well then, there ya go, end of story.

A person comes up and ask to use my P.A.
My reply, you can hire my services if you like.
Their answer, we have our own sound person.
How come he doesn't have his own rig? If he doesn't then he must not be much of a soundman.
well then, there ya go, end of story.

Excuse: well you're stuff is already here, we wouldn't have to lug all of our junk down here.
Answer: how do you think this stuff got here, I had to lug it down.

Excuse: well it seems like you would want to help out someone who's just starting out.
Answer: Well when I went to the music store and took MY money out of MY wallet which I made from doing MY shows, I don't remember YOU having contributed ANY money to help ME buy it. It's called paying your dues, when you go out and pay your dues, you will then learn what it means to take your hard earned cash and purchase things to make your show better.

When I was singing with live bands, I had my own equipment, or I took my share of the money made and put it back into the band to purchase needed equipment.
When I was in the studio working with bands, I was always the first one there, the last one to leave. I did my homework, I was prepared, I didn't waste time or money, I didn't feel the need to be drunk or stoned to do my work, it was a business investment, something to help further my future.

The one time I did loan a mic, it got stolen, the person I loaned it to, never repaid me. The one time I loaned a guitar, it got scratched, the person I loaned it to never even bothered to tell me when he brought it back. The one time I loaned speakers out, they got blown within ten minutes of being hooked up to their pa, and they were double 18 bass scoops. Thanks goodness, there were still under warranty, and I was a personal friend of the guy who manufactured them.

A professional never ask to use another person equipment, only an amateur would make such a fool hardy gesture in my opinion. A biker would never in his right mind, just come up out of the blue and ask another biker to ride his bike, that's an act of total disrespect. If I make you the offer to use my equipment, that's one thing, but if assume that just because I have x amount of stuff, that it's there for public use, then you assumed wrong.

I'm not being an arse, I'm just protecting my livelihood, my investment, something that is dear to me, that I have worked hard to acquire. There ya go, end of story....LOL

James

Most of the guys I know around our age will call up and say

"I'm returning your speakers under ONE condition"

which is ?

"I NEVER see my wife again. You must KEEP HER".

Quote:

Exactly. I feel this way too, I'm extending myself out've the goodness of my heart when I lend someone something and they are in a pinch, or dire straits..This isn't something that will EVER be expected of me to do. It's a VERY big favor to someone else..  They would have to ask me assuming there are extenuating circumstances in which they need some help. NOT a bar owner.  Regarding others using my equipment, well, like I said, in my case these were musicians that weren't loaded with money, and unforeseen things happened such as missing cable, misplaced Shure SM-58, etc.  Guitar breaks, etc.   Amateur OR pro, doesn't matter to me. It's the people, AND the type of equipment they need to borrow, and for how long, and WHERE they are going to use it.. So, again..

Quote:
I'm not comfortable letting people I don't even know use my equipment. If they ask I'm going to say no. Am I being selfish?

NO, IN THIS CASE you are being smart, and using common sense !  BUT,  if you do know them and trust them.. Sometimes you can lend certain pieces if equipment out. I let you know how I feel about *WHO* I feel OK with using equipment of mine, and under what circumstances... BUT NEVER in the case "I don't know them".  That's treading on foolish to allow strangers to use your stuff, or even touch it !  I've had both favorable and unfavorable experiences lending out equipment, but it can be done relatively safely too if it's a microphone or something small..

As long as everybody knows that BABS speakers ARE NOT house speakers !!!

I never plan on growing up. Growing old, I have no choice or say in the matter, but growing up, I have the final say, and I say nooooooooo. ;)

I love your pic of you and karen.  :dancin:
You've met the owner Johnny. He isn't much of a people person  LMAO
I think he thought in the beginning he was going to make the bar a blues band bar.
He was convinced that would make him big money.
He sings once in a while. He usually has to be drunk first though.

Yeah, Wednesday used to be jam night. Any blues players could come in and setup and take turns. The problem was no one came and it was the same 3 people all the time. A girl who could not sing, a guy who played keyboard to his computerized musis and drum beat, and a harmonica player. To say the least - it was horrible.
