Google bars closing You will come up with dozens like this.
It is just another factor that has hurt the bar business or any other mom & pop store for that matter...

Portland Oregon shares the border with Vancouver Washington and when Washington put their non-smoking law into effect there was a definite influx of business on the Oregon side especially bars right accross the river that separates the two states. After a month or so people migrated back over the border to their familiar haunts. We are a creature of habit, we go where we feel comfortable.
As far as the statistics....I cannot speak for other states or situations. Our bar is a little unique in that we are situated in an area where it has a very high concentration of high priced real estate, yet the other side of the street is more middle class. Its quite a melting pot of professional and blue collar folks. This bar has been there since 1934 so it's well established in the area. There are 4 bars within a 2 block area and 3 of them are smoking.
I do think that once the state does go non-smoking this place will have already established itsef and it's clientle. I think it was a smart move for the owner.

Yep, those banning smoking, Christmas trees, Santa Claus, freedom of opinion, seal hunts, furs, meat, and a myriad of other things.

After reading what Flipper said it puts me more at ease. It does seem the studies done on the issue back up what he says. The bars have less business at first, then build back up with even a bigger business then before.
Actually, that is not my understanding. Overall, based on bar sales figures from some dozen states which have gone through this, business returns to about 6% less than normal after dropping off 15-25% initially. The circumstance described by Flipper often happens when a bar or restaurant goes non-smoking when all other bars in the area are smoking. Cincinnati bar owners are particularly concerned, because Kentucky is a five-minute drive away....
When I called the health department in our county that is what they told me. They actually got pretty snippy with me when all I was trying to do was find out what our area was doing. I think in the political arena it is a heated subject.
In our area all the Chicago suburbs make a decision individually. So you can literally drive a mile to another suburb to be able to smoke. Some suburbs are opting to have a partial ban. For instance: You can smoke in the bar if they serve food.
Most of the surrounding suburbs from where my bar is located have gone nonsmoking. Obviously a lot of smokers will migrate to us. I feel like pressure will make all areas go nonsmoking at some point. These bars that are being forced to go nonsmoking and lose business are not going to like the fact we are down the street.
I personally think the whole thing is crazy. It is legal to smoke and it is a personal decision if you want to go into a public place where there is smoking. I do think it is an invasion of personal rights. I can't believe it is happening.

We had an establishment that was very large, and had a seperate room for families with children etc. not really associated with the bar itself. They also had one huge area beside the bar, in basically the same room for bands and whatever entertainment they chose. They closed that particular part of the room off and made it a fine dining restaurant. "Non - smoking". As of right now, every banquet they cater, party they do, or just a couple eating dinner out and not wanting to sit in bar, end up coming into the bar area to have their cigarette. At one point in time I thought it was a dumb idea, because they lost a lot of business putting in that "Fine Dining". The bar had a good crowd, everything was working for them, but boom. It died. Now with the new laws going into effect the first of the year, they may lose everything. The owner smokes like a fien, and is already complaining about what he will do. To make a long story short, I am, (almost was) a smoker also. I did, after realizing what it was costing me a week, the smell, the laws, and as many of you have said wake up in the morning and feel like yuk! I went to my family doctor of years and got a prescription for a pill that you take for one month to quit. It worked well for one of my girlfriends who smoked much more than me, and I too now am very anxious to make it work. I am sick of worrying about where we will go to have that cigarette, and the money I save will be well worth it. I don't however, want to see these small bars lose business over it, but I think if they have to go outside, oh well. I would if I wanted to be out bad enough for Karaoke and could not smoke in the bar. They, most of them will find ways to get around it, I am sure. Put covered decks out doors, and as someone else said put some type of heating in there. They will find a way. But for me, it doesn't matter anymore! I can buy more shoes!!!!! Ha Ha! It will all come out in the wash!

If you are talking about Ohio, I don't see how. Basically, the law says you can't have a roof over a public smoking area. It is one of the strictest laws, modeled after the very strict Washington one.
It is possible it will get tossed in court, yet. In any case, it appears 90% of bars have kept smoking in Cincinnati area, and 70% of smoking restaurants have gone non-smoking (my friend's estimate, better than any I can make).

People will always try to find a loop hole and make it work.
Instead of a roof which definition is a perminant structure attached to a building. They can use an awning or tent.
The owner at our bar rebuilt the beer garden twice, to comply with city code. He wanted to keep it open year round. He could not use a roof or an awning that attached to the building. He could not use anything that couldn't be removed, bar, walls etc... You would be amazed what he has constructed. You would have no idea the beer garden wasn't just a normal room. He has a self standing awning. The walls are all hinged together and can be taken down.
Now this was all down because of city code for a beer garden, not because of smoking laws.

Just my idea, but if the business is only going five minutes away why not check out the Kentucky bars?
It's only the same five minutes for you also..
With that many people going across the river, bars that have no KJ/DJ may be looking..
Just remember the golden rule: "The one with the most gold rules".
So follow the money.
