It was a lot nicer 14 years ago. Most of the songs were 3 minutes or less. Lots of happy singers. Now even the country songs are 4-5 long. Before in the seventies it was just the acid tripping songs......that lasted 5-6-7-15 minutes. They wanted you to get the full efffect. :drunk:

I have noticed some very long rap songs, blues songs and heavy metal songs. Sometimes i just have to go with the flow and take a potty break or a nap. LMAO

Few of those 60's Doors songs, Iron Butterfly songs, and of course Alices Restaurant made it to Karaoke format without being cut significantly though, right ?
I have no idea about American Pie... Whether there's a Karaoke version that's rediculously long or not.. 60's and 70's psychedelic period LONG song stuff has been edited significantly, although still long I suppose

American Pie 8 1/2 minutes. Paradise by T D B lights 8 1/2 minutes.
Stairway to Heaven is shortened. There are a few 6-7 minute songs.
I just bought Alices Rest for someone, I'll have to play it the whole way to time it.

Yea... when either of those two are put in ..... we just announce "okay everyone.... get ready for a great sing-a-long"
Paradise is a crowd fav ..... so that one flies easy ..... but American Pie DOES get some groans.
The one that drives me bonkers is Bat Out Of Hell....Meatloaf. That one NEVER seems to end..... :banghead:

Or they can do like Music Maestro version of Come Sail Away - take that 7 min song & chop it to about 2 1/2 min - one of THE worst editing jobs I have ever heard, I wouldn't even list it when I bought it, I let a couple people sing it with the warning that it literally sucked, they wholeheartidily agreed, the Sound Choice came out with a great version to replace it with. I have the Iron Butterfly song that has been chopped like the 45 single, my version of Stairway is pretty close to original length. American Pie have both the 45 single shortened version & the full length - oddly NOBODY EVER picks the shortened version.

I don't have many sing "American Pie." However, when I do, I make the comment that so and so is going to sing "American Pie." For those who wish we will be showing the classic film, "Gone With The Wind" out on the patio while it's being sung. That usually gets a big laugh.

There are 3 songs that really get to me, and almost all for the same reason- The never ending repeating chorus!!
Feel Like Making Love- Bad Company- 2 full minutes of the same 4 words....
This Song (or My Heart) Will Go On- Even with the best of karaoke singers, 5+ mins is long....
And the worst offender............Suspicious Minds. I have resorted to telling people the disc is broken- and I use digital!!!
One addition, and I am sure it is unique to me, because my friend is one of the only crazy ones to try it, But 'Suite Madame Blue' by Styx- between the 3 minute music break and the 50-100 times of just saying "America, America, Americaaaaaaaaaaaa"
ARGHHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!

Hey, when you Feel Like Making Love, you often have to ask more than one chick to find one that is on the same page, hense the repeats. Maybe if they hadn't edited out the face slaps, it would be more apparent.
As far as long songs go, I think THE WORST of all time is My Heart Will Go On by Celine Dion. I literally have to go outside during that song because it makes my left nut hurt.
The BEST long song for karaoke that no one will ever complain about it Rappers Delight, which comes in a shade under 7 minutes. Everyone loves every minute of it. The funny thing is that the karaoke version, at a little under 7 minutes, is actually the shorter, edited version. The original album version is 14 minutes 37 seconds and contains two verses that the karaoke version does not.
THAT would be overkill, although as a KJ, I could actually go to another club, sing a karaoke song myself, use the restroom, and be back in time to have a drink while that 15 minute song rapped up. That would be groovy.

I took P by the D B L out of my book. In 14 years I have only heard 1 couple actually sing the song right. Don't need 8 minutes of people stumbling through a song, sorry.

When it's a noticeably BUSY night. Such as a Friday or Saturday. Is it considered bad etiquette to say to people. "I'm sorry, but songs over ___ minutes are welcome sunday-tuesday but when the rotation list is as long as it currently is, people get very antsy, and I've run into probs offering a selection of songs that extend over 5 minutes during peak bar crowd periods". Maybe even post something regarding this someplace. ? I don't know. Just wondering.

It's not even listed in my book.
Unfortunately the trend toward longer songs has been on the rise for 30 years. They went from 2-3 minutes up to 4-5 minutes, average. I just hope it ends there.
Pretty hard to be a KJ and get paid for playing 4 songs and hour. LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO

It depends on the night. If it is a busy night I let them know how long the song is first. Usually they'd rather not sing it. If they do want to sing it I let them know I will play it, but will have to cut it short. I've never had a problem with this approach. Most people can sense a busy night and understand. It works well because a lot of the time the end of these songs is mostly music anyway.
Another method people tend to like is I will speed up the song during the music breaks. This way the song isn't as long and they can sing the entire thing.

That's what I like about those quaint rural bars. Everybody knows each others name, even on those packed fridays nights you speak of now !

And that is why I cant identify with most of the comments here about bars or bar owners...
The bar owners around I have known for more than 20 years The singers I have sang with for 15 years or longer non-karaoke... The people here are very karaoke savy including non-singers (audience) and would laugh at some of the naive comments made here.. I sometimes wonder if we are on the same planet!!!
In a rural setting we should be in a bubble and non-cognizent of other happenings but it seems that everybody here whether in a large city or not is still in their own little bubble and try to applt their methods and advice to other areas....
