if you have a gig from 9pm to 12pm does this enclude setup time. Several singers and KJs here strat setting up a 9 - this ticks me off when I call ahead of time and I'm told they start at 9pm.

I go from 8:30 to 1. I start at 8:30. I don't get paid for my set up or tear down time, but I always start on time.

I'm a solo singer and that's the way I do business. But I was beginning to wonder because of the way some of the others setup around here.

Hi. I work from 9-2. I am going at 9... if there are singers they are singing, if not I play a song. The set up isn't paid for thats just part of the job.

Well i'm always set up, but always show up a little early to get everything fired up. When I do mobile shows, I try to set up during the afternoon of the evening playing, just to make sure there are no surprises - forgotten cord, bad piece of gear, whatever....If they don't allow me to set up that early, I try to get to the show as early as possible. I don't charge any extra for set-up/tear down, that's included in the price of the night.

Same here, I like to get to a gig early. Get set up, check equipment, get a soundcheck. I still like to have at least 30 mins or so before I go on to relax, walk around chat with people, pass out books, songslips and such. Once I start, it's rare I get to take a break, so I want to make sure everyting is ready to go.

Me too - I am 9 to 2am or 3am. I always start at that time. I don't consider setup time in the equation.

We set up in the afternoon ....... and arrive about 1/2 hour early to play music and check for any "bugs".... get selection books passed out..... etc. Show starts at 8:30 and goes non-stop till 1:30. The bars/clubs like the last half hour pf the night to be "last call" finish up ..... so they can be outta there at 2am. That's why we stop at 1:30.
We usually tear down during that half hour ..... or the next morning... depending on bar preference ...... or if we have a gig the next day.
Fee is for "live music" only. Set up and Tear down are not included.

I start setup about 1 hour before my start time. It gives me time to mess around and do what I want and relax until I have to deal with singers.

I agree with most of you peeps here. If I go 9-1, then I show up at 7:30-8, get things all up and running.....then chill for a bit before the show. If it's a repeat night or if I have confidence with the place, I may not show up till about 8:15. Still give me plenty of time to get ready to go. Never hurts to give extra time, wierd things happen! We try to set up about 30-45 min before hand to make sure we dont have any probs with the sound system or lighting.Once we forgot the doggone cdgs at the house on the dining room table !! :dunce: But luckily the show was 10 minutes away so we could go back & get them ! Dont have to worry about that now...Just gotta remember the laptop !! Hahaha
EDIT : That was 30-45 min before start time

even in the antipodes setup isnt part of the equation. If its a gig at the hotel (5 mins away) I will set up mid afternoon so as I can soundcheck in peace. then its just a matter of walking in and switching on 5 mins before start
if it is a gig that is further away then I like to be there at the bare min of 40 mins if there is two of us and hour if there is only me cos I cant lift my speakers on my own let alone get them up on stands.

our show is from 8-1 (usually 1:30 or 2, though). we don't include set-up time for regular shows, but for a private party i charge 30 minutes for set-up and 30 minutes for tear down. if the gig is more than 25 miles away i also charge travel time. that having ben said, like kelly, we usually set up at least an hour in advance to make sure all mics, lights, etc are working. we also do a sound check for the room. alot of times, especially in a smaller venue, the room acoustics change as more people show up so the original sound check goes out the window, but it will give you a baseline for good sound.

Years ago that happened to me - I left the CDGs at home. I almost had a heart attack trying to make it back in time.
I'm lucky enough now to be very close to home. I have forgotten to put my engagement ring on - big no no and ran back home for it. LMAO

I get to a job 1 hour before. Most of that time is setup. Depending on how far from the van the equipment has to travel. All of my time is worth money. But I get paid to do karaoke for 4 hours. Setup, tear down and travel time to & from the job is not the concern of the bar owner. It's what I have to do to get the contracted amount of money for the 4 hours of top quality, non stop, continuous, no filler/dance music added karaoke, as only I can provide.
