This topic came to me after reading Babs' post about long rotations.  Because I use Sax and Dotty's, I can easily see exactly how long my rotation is.  From there I can do the math and tell new singers how long until they are up.

At my shows I average 16 singers per hour, which breaks down to 8 singers for a half hour and 4 singers for 15 minutes.  Makes it easy for me to let singers know how long they can expect to wait.

What numbers do you use?

That is completely dependant on the length of the songs chose.  I've counted on random nights after a similar discussion here a while back.  1 hour I got 16 singers in, the next hour I got 12 - longer songs, the next I got 14, the last I got 15.
Then another day I counted 15 first hour, 17 2nd hour, 14 3rd & 15 4th.

I usually figure about 4 minutes per song average which would break down to about 15 singers per hour if all songs remained equal.

about 14 to 16 songs per hour if everyone cooperates.

As far as determining length of wait I use MTU Hoster and if I have an entire rotation loaded...which I ususally do it has a time remaining clock on it. Hoster also gives the play time of each song so I can calculate it that way asw well.

Lots of variables, some people are slow to come up, and sometimes I think they're just deaf. Sometimes a large crowd makes it difficult for them to make their way up, and of course the length of the song. Oldies singers....gotta love 'em.....short, sweet, tells a story.....next, but then somewhere....maybe 70's it started, someone decided......my song is so good, it should last 2 or 3 times as long as it's predecessors. Rappers are just rambling, no rhyme no reason, and they make up more words than Dr. Suess....so they can make a song last indefinitely....lol.....so the age of your crowd plays a big part in the number of singers in an hour. With this said....if you're getting 15 songs in an hour....."don't worry be happy"

How many songs do you folks typically allow each singer per turn?

Most of our songs are 6 mins plus. I just wish they are more 4 min songs. The fastest KJ here will be lucky to get 10 singers in an hour slot.

I'll allow as many as they have as long as I have time.  Mainly depends on the rotation, some nights they may get 1 or 2, other nights they may get 5, 6, or more.

When asked by a singer 'How long?' I look at the rotation until that person sings and then multiply by 4 and by 5 to give them a range.

For example - 12 singers is a response of 'about 45 minutes to an hour'.

I went to one show where each singer got two songs per turn. There was a contest before the "general" singing started, and I ended up leaving early, so I don't know if they ever got back to the top of the rotation or not.

Other than that, I have only seen one song per turn.

Keep in mind, my shows are not near the size as what some of you folks are working with. Sometimes I'll stick with a regular rotation and I get between 12 to 15 in an hour.
But there have been nights that the crowds in a great mood and we just go with the flow. If a singer gets great response I'll ask them to sing another tune, or if the singer gets so so response I'll think of a tune real quick that I think they might do better and ask them to sing it as well. And there have been nights that I didn't even bother with songslips, I just let folks look through the books and come up and tell me what they want to sing. Like last night I did a Christmas party and we didn't even bother with the slips, we just let whoever wanted to sing whenever they felt like singing. If there wasn't anyone up to the mic, I'd sing songs until someone came up. It's actually kind of cool to have such a laid back format. As long folks are having fun and the folks that really wanted to sing get their chance, I'm good to go.

James

we're pretty consistant at 15 singers per hour.  usually when someone asks how long it will be until they sing i tell give them the number in number of singers as opposed to minutes.  that way they can keep track.  if they ask me more than three or four times though i give them a number in days! LMAO

I get in about 12-14 an hour, but I also play about 30-45 seconds of dance filler between songs to keep the energy up. And PLEASE let's not get into the filler music discussion again!!

LMAO As many years as I've been doing this I don't think I've ever truely counted.
I just try to get as many people in as possible. Only one song per rotation. If I let someone sing 2 songs in a row you'd find me in a body bag somewhere.  LMAO
Next time I work I'm going to try to keep track. I'm sure it is somewhere between 12- 17 an hour though. I figure about 4 min. per song.

On a busy night I don't allow people to sing 6 min. or longer songs. They can sing the song, but I cut it short. I've never had a problem doing this. Most people don't want to sing a song that's that long. Plus the fact they know the crowd will get hostile. It's a win win all around.

I did a coffee house for about 4 months.....we'd start out the first hour with about 14 or 15 songs an hour....after a couple of rounds of java.....we'd get up to 25 or 30............ :)  :)  :)  :)  :)  :)  :)  :)

Most of the English Karaoke songs are well below 6 min. A Big majority of the Malay and Dayak songs are 6 min plus. Cutting the singers at 5 min is suicidal.

If I have a slow night long songs are okay. It is just a matter of reading the crowd.
I realise things are different in your neck of the woods Jian.
I've had the crowd boo people who even start singing "American Pie" because they know how long it is, so if a person wants to sing after I tell them I'll shorten the song I announce first it is the shorter version. My karaoke crowd is very in tune with how things work.
