Does anyone here use lights or fog, and if so could you give me some advice on using a fog machine with the lights for the best effect. Like where to put the fogger, and how much to use so forth. I am not wanting a terribly think fog, but enough to accent the lights somehow.  Thank you again.

if everything had gone to plan, I could have been able to advise you. I bought a fog machine for just that reason just after I began working for the hotel I work for. The week after I bought it a band they had playing was using one and it set off the fire alarms....$1,000.00 callout fee later I decided that since I was only on a 3 month trial at the time I perhaps wouldnt try it after all, so resold it.
Seems the hotel has some weird kind of sensors that are overly sensitive.
But if its done right then the light show looks fantastic. Good luck

Thank you very much, I asked the building owner to make sure there was no suppression systems and it is all good. I am just wondering if I should mount it on the tress, or floor or? I do not want a ton of fog either, I do not want to offend people with to much fog if you know what I mean.

When it comes to fog/haze it can be a pretty cool combo. IMHO it seems to work better when the overall "house" lights are down, when you're using your personal lights.

Seems to bring it out better when you are using lights that have narrow beam or distinct pattern, as opposed to to a "can" that has more of a spread out light.

If you have a fogger, I'd probably put it on the edge of the area where people would dance & near where your lights will be coming down at. Right beside a dance floor area, if you have one. Wouldn't crank the stuff out all night, but it works really well when a fast dance song is being played or sung.

I've also heard in the past to buy water based fluid, NOT oil based.

Hopefully your fogger/hazer will have an output switch where you can control the level, so it's not too thick. If not, just turn it on every once in a while, at your discretion, then cut it off after you get the amount to your liking. Hopefully it will linger, especially if there aren't any fans there to blow it away . Might be easier to control output with a DMX board, if the hazer's compatible, but programming that might be a pain.

Keep it on the floor for better effects. Still not sure if you have a dance area between the singer and the audience, but it you do, put it on the back edge of the dance area away from the crowd. You might want to announce that it's just a harmless haze machine, and the place ISN'T on fire !

I tried the fogging machine once. The singers complained they cannot read the lyric from the monitor. Don't use it anymore.

BE CAREFUL when using fog, we had a girl that was HIGHLY allergic to the smoke, we had to call an ambulance that night as she went into some kind of shock.  We no longer use fog anymore.
Although not mentioned, some also use bubbles, another beware - dance floors can get slick with all the bubbles popping, people slipping can create lawsuits.

bubbles are murder on laptops also...actually at the risk of sounding like an old fart why not just concentrate on great sound and selection with ambient lighting, if you have the first two the rest is just kinda fluff really

If you do high quality karaoke, you don't have to "haze" and "Defuse" the crowd.

Just a thought.

OK bd....that can be true for a bar gig, but I believe this was for a private party. You have to do differrent things for a private party than you would at a bar gig. I have a small fogger just for parties where they might not want 100% karaoke, and want to dance a little and have a good time.

I like that hazing machine tho.....

Many hazing machine will not set off the fire alarm but some will still set it off. Fog machines tend to produce heavier smoke so they tend to stay near the floor where as haze will spread out more so it's more preferred by many. Make sure you get something that is NOT oil based since they leave residue.

One more thing is that unless you are using a laser, fog/haze is not really needed. The most of the lights will look fine without having the fog/haze. One of major reasons why you would use it would be show off the lasers since their beams are not very visible without fog/haze.
