Like WEED stated the crossover seperates frequencies and sends them to an appropriate speaker.  PA speakers have crosovers built into them that send the HIGH frequencies to the horns, and the lows to the woofer.

If you were to add a SUB wofer to your system, a crosover would be required to send the only extreme lows to the sub woffer to give you that thump!!!!

ok ...i hate to ask this ...but everyone keeps talking about crossovers..
what IS a crossover?
do i have to have one of those?
btw....
i am going to go with the cheapest amp i can find right now....and that might mean i have to rent one for now.....
maybe when i get to the rental place the guy will talk me into a different one..
i really dont care what the brand is as long as it gets the job done....

A crossover is a frequency dividing network.  95% of speakers such as your already have a passive (unpowered) crossover built in.  The only time you would need to add a crossover is if your were going to add subs & more amps to get the correct frequencies to to correct speakers.
As far as cheap amps, you do get what you pay.  For the power you need, figure between $400-500 for a decent amp - even the Samson & Behringer are right around this $$ figure & that's about as lowend as i'd go, any cheaper & it will sound it!  Don't let a salesman talk you into something too expensive, but I wouldn't go no lower.

yeah i agree.....
i definitely wont get anything of a lesser quaility..
i meant cheaper as in ...right now all i can do is rent one...and who knows maybe they will have a better quality one that was used or something that i can get...
in the next 6 months if i cant find a decent used one then i may be able to afford to get a new one...
for right this minute i only have one job that i have to do so renting one will be the easiest route to go for now...(unless like i say they have a decent used one i can get)
thank god i dont need a crossover ....   :dancin:
at least i got a break there....
wouldnt it be great if i went to the music rental place and they had a nice used amp for sale cheap?  top brands would be?
and what should i avoid.....??

That's how my entire first system minus an eq & effects - came about.  All used items, some from Pawn SHops.  Just make sure they aren't tattered looking, used/abused.  Also make sure the pawn shop has the capability to test or the very minimum a money back guarantee, some actually do have this within a 3 day period.

Oh yeah, and of course EABY, but make sure to think about shipping costs when bidding.  Many sellers will sell stuff for CHEAP, but then kill ya on shipping charges.  Also make sure to read the descriptions and fine print carefully, and make sure you can return it too, if it is DOA.

i dont care to much for ebay....seems like they over charge on everything...
a friend of mine just stopped by and he said he just saw an amp at a pawn shop(it was a whole system)
but it was only 350 watts.....dang.....but 350 would have been better then what i have now......
if i cant find one maybe i will call them and find out where it was....
what brand should i avoid?

If it was 350 watts per channel into 8 ohms, then it would suffice, if it's 350 watts total, pass.

Also check your local music store that rent equipment.  You may be able to buy the rental equipment at a much reduced price, but as with the pawn shops check the condition as to abuse.

This thread is a fine reason why karaoke is so bad anymore.
