Yes Eric, when you are as good as I am, singing once a week can greatly improve the bars bottom line.

I closely monitor what my entire crowd is doing.   If they are heading toward the door there can only be 3 reasons.

1.   They were bar hopping and it's time for the next one.

2.   The singers suck.  
          a.   Too many boring songs.
          b.   They all suck.
          c.   The KJ sucks and they didn't want to hear dance music all night.

3.   The drink prices are too high.

So if you think you are so good, why are you asking so many questions?    

I just told you why I'm successful.   You'll just have to figure out how to do the rest.

It was about 12 years ago when she was hosting like that. I'll bet after spending time on this board that she would do it pretty much like Lonman in the interest of fairness of rotation. Just a guess.

Good call, sweetheart. Yeah, I suppose it was a case of monkey-see monkey-do as far as starting each round with a song. We would announce that the next round was coming up a few songs in advance, then "officially" start it with a song. Never worried too awful much because we usually ended the evening with nearly an hour's worth of song slips turned in that could not be played. We ended the show at 1:45 but nearly always played until 2:00 or 2:15 if we could stretch it. Bar closed at 2:00; the bartenders and security HATED it.

But I guess around here starting the round with the KJ is the norm...I can think of four places off the top of my head that do it that way. Hmmmm...food for thought. I need to pay more attention.

That's one thing about ours, we aren't allowed to go over time - 1:00 on weeknights & 1:30 on weekends.  Now on weekinghts I do have the 1/2 hour leeway provided it's ok with the bartenders that night & just as much time as is needed to finish out a round, but Fri & Sat we are shut down at 1:30 - if it's 1:29 i'll go one more song if I have one, but that is the last song.  This is per bar manager, owner & security.  Bar closes at 2, they want that 1/2 hour to get everyone out on time which is sometimes hard in itself.

Except for one KJ, ours only seem to sing alot if there is a lack of singers who have signed up.  I think that's how it should be personally.

I like when they sing. Most of the time. But, yeah, if the rotation gets too long.. they really should step aside. Like Lonman said, they can go out on their nights off and do it as a singer. (unless... they work most every night, then they should get their chance)

Heck, nevermind. My mind is changing too much:) All I know, is if I KJ'd, I'd want to join in the fun. It makes me, personally, LIKE my KJ better if I've gotten to sing with them the same night. I wouldn't like to never know if they could or not, and never hear them. Then again, I'm not stingy. I like to hear other people too.... not just myself.

Again, nevermind...... I'm goin'.  :D

Also, you have to ask the question "can they sing (very well)"?  Does anyone really want to hear a paid KJ sing if they're a bad singer?  

That's why I said the KJ should be able to sing and sing very well.   It's the only hope for the crowd to hear a talented singer on some nights.    It could be the difference between have a full bar or an empty one.

(3) My close friends have been in the karaoke biz longer than you.
(4) They have taught me everything I need to know for free for Six years.
(5)I can buy one of there FOUR systems with karaoke Disk for $10,000
(6) Aleast I know how to setup the equipment & adjust it for each venue, and for each singer, and truth be known I have probably lost more knowlege through farting rainbows than you will ever know in a hundred years!!  LMAO

I took up for you in the begining because I felt sorry for you....I could tell by some of the things that you say...That you know some stuff but not as much as you try to make people think.  I felt like you had some good ideas...because  I have been there done that!!!!!!  Some of the points you have are true, But I now see that your much more pititful than I had thought.

Babs, I like the idea of getting people up to sing with you.  I assume that at times you do that to "break the ice".  Are there other occasions during which you call someone up to sing with you?

Do you have much success getting strangers up?  If you're inviting another female up, do you actually do a duet or just sing together?  How do you go about choosing who to invite up?

Do you ever "help" a singer out by singing along, uninvited?

I never ever sing with someone uninvited. I even have some people ask me to sing along and don't because I think they sound so wonderful on their own.

I help people when asked to or if I see them struggling will ask them if they want help. I never want to appear to take the spot light away from anyone.

Sometimes I'll pick a regular to sing with me it maybe sharing a song, doing a duet, or just harmonizing. It is hard to explain, but I have been in the same bar for so many years I kind of have a feel for who can sing what and what song will get everyone going.

This works well - I will invite a group up, maybe a table of girls who aren't coming up to sing, but I can see them singing along in the crowd. I assure them I will help them and sing a long. Nine out of ten times I can just let them take over and they end up coming back for more.  LMAO

New people are tougher to get to come up by themselves, so I will usually ask a person and their friend together.

I also will  invite a person to sing if I see them singing along with the song I'm doing.
If they are doing okay I will let them take over. Another way is to go into the crowd when I am singing and let them sing phrases from the song. This is great for people who won't do a whole song or lack the confidence to put a song in, but would like to sing a little.

You, know Babs, your last post reminded me of an incident that caused me to avoid a particular show, thereafter.  The KJ was singing "The Rose", one of my favorite songs to harmonize to, particularly at the end.  

She was doing such I nice job and I got carried away and harmonized with her (something I would have not done to another singer) during the last few lines.

She, the KJ, was upset and made a snide remark regarding my efforts.

What do you folks think?

If the KJ was singing, did you get up on stage and grab a mic?

I personally don't think it would have been a problem with me. The only thing that concerns me is I wouldn't want the crowd to think they could come on stage and anytime they wanted and grab a mic when someone else was singing without being invited.

It doesn't sound like that was what was happening though. It sounds like she was mad because she thought you stole the spotlight from her. As a karaoke host I never should feel that way.

The only time it is a problem for me is if the person was out of tune and I couldn't sing because of it. Then I would probably let them finish the song or turn their mic down.

I have a few patrons who will tip me $20 to sing. In that case I would whisper in their ear and explain the situation. That has only happened once or twice and the people always understand. I'm just careful how I say it.

It is funny she was singing the "rose". I don't sing that song unless I have a patron sing with me. I love the sound of harmony. I much rather sing it with someone.
