I finally decided not to do one this year as the bars are not willing to pay enough
to make it worth my time away from family and friends. Frankly they clean up on this night and are not willing to sweeten the deal for me...so after 5 straight years of working New Years Eve I'm taking a much needed break.
How about you? Are you doing a show or just celebrating?

I'll be working New Years Eve. I don't mind it. It looks like it lands on a Sunday.
*Wierd* The bars should be happy about that. That is usually a low crowd night.

I will have a show running in one of my bars but I will not be doing it. I have a regular KJ for that location and he needs the extra $$

doggone it, yes! this is the second year in a row we've had to cancel our new year's eve party. we normally have everyone over to the house for a big party with a them...70's, 80's, toga, sports...whatever. anyway last year i had to do my regular gig. this year i got pressured into DJing for the owner of my regular gig. at least i've already got everything programmed down to the minute so i can have a little fun as well.

For me, if they want me to work, and willing to pay for a NYE gig, I will do it.
But saying that.....
WHY?
I never understood why bars have special entertainment on nites they are going to be packed full. I understand it if they are trying to bring in additional customers, but usually most bars, or at least the ones here in my area, would be packed with or without entertainment.
I dunno, bar owners confuse me. Just like one of the bars here in town used to do karaoke evey sat nite. Now they switched it to every other sat, and on the off sat, they hired a DJ. Not a really good DJ, nothing fancy, just spins disc after disc. No lights, no mixing, no mixed/remixed tracks, basicaly a realy big juke box. WHY? THey would have just as many peoplei n the bar with out the DJ, and make extra money on people putting money in the jukebox instead
Confusion
so confused.

I guess I am strange, I set one price no matter what job I do. I dont quote dearer for NY eve or weddings and other private functions. If I am going to give my best at every venue then how can I differentiate price? I simply use an excuse if I dont wish to do it eg, sorry fully booked. I have real problems with bands or dj/kjs who extort money NY eve or for special functions

So you charge the same to do a private party for 4 hours as a bar gig? Either you are getting much more money for your gigs, or you are short changing yourself on private parties.
In my opinion, for what it is worth, you can do a weekly show for less, because it is steady income. $150 p/nt X 4 weeks is $600 per month. For a one time show, you have to set up, scope it out, do your thing, most likely sing more and interact to get party guests going more, etc.
Don't you think you deserve more money for that? It's not that you are putting less effort into a weekly gig, it's just that a private party takes a lot more work.
Just my :2cents:

I have a private show on Thursday this week and Thursday next week $450. per night both are company parties. Never feel bad about charging more at these they definatly have the budget. As for my weekly gigs I have an agreement with the owner that my rate is $200. per night but I get $25. More if they make over $1500 in sales and another $25. if they make over $2000. 250 is the most I will take.I always work with the bar to make sure everyone is happy. 1 bar I used to do was paying me $200 per night on a Wed. it was not working so before they cancelled I told let's go for 4 more weeks and I'll only take $100 per night to try and get it going and It worked out well. I worked there for 5 years. So you gotta be flexible, but also grab the bigger 1 nighters when you can.

If you were in the regular work-a-day, 9-5 world you'd demand time and a half wouldn't you? Why is being a KJ or a DJ different? That being said, I find being a DJ much easier that being a KJ so I have different pricing to reflect that. Still, I am chargin more for DJing on NYE than KJing on a regular night. Simply because it is a holiday...time and a half, y'all.

Look at it this when, when there is a shortage of any comodity because the demad is higher, the prices go UP. On "holidays" the demand for bar entertainmet (kj/dj/bands) goes up, so why shouldn't prices go up? It's a supply and demand issue.

If the price don't go up the bar owners get too used to pay nothing for something. They have to know that quality has a price at high times. They'll complain and try and get you to take less on a slow night , but you notice they don't offer more on a kickass night. Don't let yourself be taken advantage of it hurts everyone.
