When you say non drinker, do you mean they buy nothing and sit there all night? Or do you mean they don't drink alcohol. They can still buy food & non alcoholic drinks. And if the price seems a little high, it's because someone has to pay for the free entertainment. Pay and shut up. Or stay home. Nobody works for free. You don't, so why should you deny the bar owner making a profit from the entertainment? We all have to eat and be prifitable.

It dosen't matter, karaoke, or what entertainment you have, some people spend little to nothing, and some spend like a drunken sailor(pardon my cliche). No matter how much a big spender you think you might be, there's always someone who's gonna spend more, so everybody, as usual, draws the line where they feel comfortable. At dance clubs, I've bought the first drink for certain aquaintances, and watched them dance all night, while nursing that one drink for almost 6 hours. With 2 drink minumums, I see people buying the 2 cheapest choices, and that's it for the night. What are you gonna do? If you think karaoke, or any other form of entertainment is going to sustain an establishment, you're doomed to failure. If the food you serve is average or less, people won't buy it, they won't even come back....no money in that. People like drink specials. Ladies night used to really bring in the business, but seems most places can't have it anymore, because it disriminates. I remember women taking advantage of it, and buying drinks for their male friends.....hard to stop that. The crowd you attract definetly can make you or break you, as well as a police car bird-dogging your place night after night. Ending on a positive note, drinkers (of course we mean alcohol when we use this term, stop confusing the issue) will drink when they are happy, when they are sad, when they have money, when they're flat broke.....etc......build it right, and they will come..........

That was a good point.
"drink while you sing or you're not welcome" as a bar slogan would be a huge turn off to even the drinkers I think.
BillyBob, you need an attitude adjustment. I'm starting to think I DO know who you are.... You're just in disguise as a puppy dog:)

Karaoke is not for the DRINKER or the NON DRINKER
It is for the customer or patron of the establishment that has hired the KJ
Bottom line is - singers need to be BUYING customers to be considered of value.
Whether it is FOOD / SODA / WATER / BEER - If you're hosting a show at a BAR the singers need to BUY and support the venue. NOT just (1) $2 soda for 4 hours - But they need to spend money on SOMETHING.
Now if the singer doesn't spend a dime but is with a group thet spends thats OK
as long as someone is supporting the place.
But policing what they buy is not that of the KJ - The bar should have rules posted for min purchases and loitering laws for people who just sit there and buy nothing.
As a KJ my goal is to satisfy the (money spending ) customer (singer)

BD - I get ya, you're saying please support your bar by purchasing something.
(in your own dog way LMAO )
I don't think anyone is disagreeing with that. I am guilty of going to karaoke and just buying coffee. I don't know what to tell you, I don't drink alcohol. The problem is most places I used to haunt would not charge me for soda or coffee. That is why I always tried to leave a good tip. Obviously these bars were doing well enough not to worry about giving a regular fee drinks.
In my experience nondrinkers haven't been a problem. I don't think I have ever seen someone come into the bar for karaoke and not at least buy a couple sodas.
Okay lets say you have one or two people come in on a regular basis that don't spend a cent ever. (odd, but I guess it could happen) Is that going to put the bar out of business - I think not. Should you try and at least buy something, of course.
So what are we arguing about?

Well, BillyBob, tell ya what.....
I got a date with a few bottles of beer this weekend. Maybe some buttery ni.pples too, and a coupla rounds of vodka n' cranberry, maybe a Tequila shot as well. And heck, I just discovered Long Island Ice Teas, so I'll most likely swig one or two of those. So I'm gonna go out friday night to karaoke, and get drunker than hell...... will that make you proud of me? I'll be a full-fleged karaoke/bar financial backer.

The people that do not buy anything are taking advantage of the bar owner. He pays for the entertainment. You pay him for having it. SUPPORT the Bar owner. BUY something ya cheap Bas-turds.
Leaving a big tip does nothing to help the bar owners income. You made the bartenders day, but screwed the bar owner. And sang for free.

Once again it's all or nothing, no give and take. Not surprised either.

It's still up to the bar ultimately. They should charge for every drink - including refills. If someone is in there not drinking, the bar reserves the right to have them leave if something isn't purchased, if they don't exercise that right, then bad on them & they can't (@$%!)!

There's usually plenty of drinkers to make up for any tea toddlers, pop and water drinkers. There's such a high mark up on drinks anyway. Heck for the cost of two generic mixed drinks you can buy a fifth of the liquor that's used.

I'm completely convinced it was real! I was screwing around with a demo of an avi to gif converter & figured that would make a perfect gif!

Well, I still think that Faith Hill response was faked. It's just way too exaggerated and hammed up! LOL

Jesus.....look what the hell I started.

Excellent point by Jamkaraoke.

I actually drink while I sing......that could be a turn-off to some.
Leaving a big tip does nothing to help the bar owners income. You made the bartenders day, but screwed the bar owner. And sang for free.
So, you think bartenders and waitresses don't deserve to make a living?
I gotta hand it to ya BD...you'll say anything to try and prove yourself right, but I've read you contradict yourself so many times just in this thread, I can see what all the hype is over you. But I'm sure they all love ya. Atleast it's not boring here.
What do you do if the non drinkers all show up on the same night and nobody buys anything? Take a cut in pay? Since you won't be playing you could drive everyone home. After you buy them all drinks until they can't see straight.
Need I say more?

Well, then we *officially* disagree. But I wont go there. Seems I recall last time I spoke my opinion on that, I got called an old bag:) haha....

Yeah, me too. Especially when I sing gretchen's "One Bud Wiser", heck, you gotta have a bottle of bud for your "prop". :drunk:
I usually go with the best of intentions, but I'm a weak person. (around alcohol environments anyhow) I end up drinking 9 times out of 10. I just don't like the idea of being made to feel like, no matter how much you like to sing or listen to others sing, no matter how good or bad you do..... that you're not welcome if you don't guzzle while you're there.

And one more thing....who the hell here is cheap? I didn't read anything about always trying to get something for nothing. Most people go out to spend money.
I also agree that no matter how much someone spends, someone else will always spend more....human nature is kinda competitive that way. Everyone has a bit of the "Jones' " about them.
If I tipped the kj $50 and someone found out, they'd tip $100 just to prove that now they are more broke than me. LMAO LMAO
I spend waaaaay too much on karaoke sometimes, and I exclusively state that I don't want any favors........I'm just a big supporter.
And I'll probably still be a big supporter when I start drinking Sprite or water or decaf coffee or whatever.
But yes, I agree that t*ts rule.....who wouldn't??? LMAO LMAO LMAO
