This discussion began in the "Windows Explorer 7 update" thread. Since it seems to be ongoing I am starting a thread for just this subject.
I'm hoping ot be able to run a windows shell to do karaoke and other stuff. This is just what I have been hoping for so I could see if Linux is what I want to switch to instead of killing myself figuring out how to do all the necessary setup for Linux (not a complaint just very hard for me to grasp).
If "BravoDelta" shows-up to hijack the thread let's just talk around her.

Well when I tried to install winamp with wine, it started to try and mount a fake windows partition to run it on Im assuming....Anyway...before it could get done it gave me some kind of error. So I'll fool around with it later LOL Hope you guys have some luck with this, maybe someone will come along who knows more about Linux stuff & can help us out. :D

To install or run windows apps one has to setup wine. The first step is base setup
1. Make fake c drive
2. install dcom98 (for dll's)
In knoppix 5.01 a wizard is used . The first step is easy but it wants to diownload dcom98... I dont have internet on this comp. If I try to boot up on the laptop where I have internet access it boots to the point where it looks for the cd in the drive then locks...Ive downloaded it and transferred to the other comp (not sure where to put it) and tried every way but loose to install it in a command line..Get the error cannot run command... Ive had no success and have spent hours on the knoppix forum.
Read this a dozen times...
Im going nuts....

I haven't heard anything from him in years. I am curious to see what he's up to.
Ollie, we could discuss this on your board if you prefer to avoid Ms. Grandiose.

Karyoker......
Wine doesnt seem to require installing dcom98. Rather it can use the native dcom98 dlls when they are in the correct directory and specified using winecfg or using the commandline with WINEDLLOVERRIDES.
Using Winetools
The (GPL) tool Wine tools is able to download and install DCOM98 and is recommended for beginners who are very new to Linux and wine:
If Winetools is installed, open a terminal window to start it and then Select Base steps -> Base steps.menu: DCOM98.
This will download and install dcom98 for you.
Or go here to get it:

Warning: DCOM98 requires a legal Windows 98 licence. LMAO
Karyoker....As far as your laptop locking up....you did make that disk a bootable disk didnt you?? Sorry....I dont mean to ask a stupid Question LOL
Do you have the laptop set so that it can boot from CD?? Seems like I read somewhere about making sure that...That option is setup/checked :D
Just a thought. :)

Ok here is what Ive found so far.. To install downloaded dcom, browse to the folder you put it in... Right click on it action-> open terminal here. Use wine dcom98.exe /c... The terms acceptance window pops up.. Next a browse window to select folder to extract and put dll's in.. Browse to .wine/fake drive/windows/system... It installs.
Then the last step is ie.6.0 When tyring to install it gets an error com98 is not installed.
If I try winedlloverrides="ole32=n" wine dcom98.exe, I get error a newer version of dcom has already been installed. To see whats really installed open the winetools.log in the .wine folder. But either method has genereated a wine/config....?????
Im assuming when you get everything setup you can remaster and burn another boot cd so you dont have to go thru this process again...

Edit I should have said neither command has gererated a wine/config file. I think the ie6.0 install is looking for it to verify installation of dcom98......

As a capper the winetools .9 wont cut it. With Debian based systems the Synaptic Package Manager is the one to use and is availible under /system/..
Winehq is the source for full tutorials on wine installs and operation...

Hey Ollie. I'm going to dive into this for a few more hours today. Fortunately my did is in towb and that may keep me from overdoing it. He's working a job here in town and will have some more free time this evening.
I may try the Debian I just downloaded on another computer after I can get things going with this Knoppix setup I am working on.
I might start discussing more of this on the cabaret-karaoke web forum you have until we get to a point where there are more results and less questions.
Did you acutally ned to load an OS once you got Wine set up? I can't figure out how to install anything in the MS shell when I'm running it.
It's gonna take some more fiddling here but you've gone a long way on yours already.

I am a Linux disciples from way back, having used it continuously as my main workstation since 1994. I have 20 Linux systems running in the office I am sitting in right now. There is only one Windows machine -- the one I use to practice my karaoke.
I would recommend not wasting your time with this; it is unlikely that Wine will work reliably to the level you need it to and have good sound quality. And anytime you wanted to update your software, you would probably break things.
I would love to see a Karaoke hosting program for Linux, though. There was a Python-based attempt some time ago called pykaraoke, but I never got it to work reliably. The other problem is a key-changer; sox can do that but 1) you need to convert to WAV first, and 2) the quality is poor.
Currently I am writing a hosting program based on Linux that would talk to a Windows-based system over a network for the actual display. It might run on the same hardware using VMWare (or Xen eventually).
