I just bought my daughter an ipod for xmas. It seems there is no software for it. I guess it is linked to itunes somehow and you don't need software anymore. Is anyone formiliar with this?
It didn't come with a dock either, but I did buy the JBL stage 2 to go with it, so I think I'm covered.

I'll tell you where this would really come in handy; I have on several occasions been asked to sing at a funeral. Don't know how it's done other places, but around here the person singing is usually out of sight. This would be perfect to copy your selected song(s) onto and then simply plug into the "house" (funeral home) system.

To address the question...
The IPOD should come with iTunes software. If it didn't you can download it for free from apple.com. Its the software that lets you manage your library and synch to the ipod itself. Of course, the itunes store is built into the software as well.
You don't necessarily need a dock -- although I think it would be slightly easier to always have the doc connetect. You should have either a USB or Firewire cable to connect to you PC.
btw-- pretty cool there's Karaoke stuff for the iPod now. Was wondering when somebody was going to come up with that. Geez, now I have to buy a new video iPod (I have a Gen3-- black/white).

The karaoke thing is cool, but my daughter doesn't sing - a real bummer for me.
As far as the download for itunes - I already have itunes on my pc. Do I need to do a special download for the ipod or is the basic itune program okay?

You should be fine with the itunes already on your PC-- You probably ought to get the latest version if you don't already have it. I think its like 7.x
When you connect your iPod, it will (SHOULD) ask you if you want to format it, synch, etc. When its synching, it'll copy all your play lists and songs to the iPod. There are ways NOT to synch everything tho.
good luck-- hope this helps.

Thank you that helped a lot. I just wanted to be ready because I know she is going to want to get it going right after she opens it.

Yes there is. After you connect the iPod, it should appear in your iTunes software. With the new version of iTunes, if you select the iPod, it should bring up a whole selection, including tabs at the top. On music tab, if you click it, it should bring up option to sync only with selected playlist. My 4G iPod is too small to keep all my music selection so I keep onlyl ones I need for workout and use that for purpose. My 30GB iPod does have my entire collection, including my dance mix I can bring to fill in music between karaoke during gigs.
Good luck with it, I think it's one of most innovative and needed product out in the market today.

Thanks Eben - I got her the new generation 4g Nano. It is supposed to hold about
2,000 songs. Boy you must have a lot of music on your pc to fill up a 30gb. I'm impressed.

I have a 30 gig Creative Zen and it is loaded with about 5200 songs. That is the fruit of about 3 months worth of labor ripping my CD collection to my computer. A little under 400 CDs with the really bad deep cuts deleted.
That also represents a few playlist pulled from the master list.
The scary thing is that those 5200 songs only take up about 21% of the player's memory, so I'm going to have to work on getting more!! I do download the top 20 about once every 2-3 weeks to keep my DJoake show hoppin with the current dance music!!

Yep, over 1400 CDs so far. I haven't gotten anywhere near getting all that music in to the computer yet. I haven't filled up my 30GB iPod yet, so far onlly 10GB, but that's only small fraction of my total music collection. One of these days I gotta sit down and get as much as I can in the computer. I think I can fill up 30GB without any problems.

When I bought my daughters their 1st mp3 players I did a lot of research. I bought a 30g creative zen xtra and a creative nomad jukebox. Great machines !!! Little did I know they would never come close to using all that space. The only other problem I had was at the time mp3 were fairly new. Ipod was just starting to advertise. How was I to know Ipod would take over the market and all the cool accessories would be mainly for them. Of course Ipods look more appealing. Well my younger daughter loves her creative and I was able to find a boombox that has a usb port for her to connect to it. But my older daughter wanted an Ipod, so she has access to all the toys that go with it. Why oh why are all the cool docking stations and speakers only for Ipod.

I just got Gigi a Nano for Christmas. She already has it because I had to use her discount to get it. I thought about taking it away from her and putting it under the tree. Maybe I will this evening.
She is going to need some help getting it the way she likes it. I can't believe I found a gaget that she likes. Now I can pick on her about it.

Well, it's pink because there was no purple. It is the newer design and has 4GB storage. I got it as a toy and a tool. She can use some of the storage to transport files. Since she had to go with me to get the discount I let her pick it out but I knew she would get pink. She was like a teenager with it.
I'm glad that she has a toy to play with. Adults need some toys too. Mine are computers.
