I have 2 that I know I can't screw up ... Criminal by Fiona Apple and You Can Sleep While I Drive by Melissa Etheridge (or Trisha Yearwood when they don't have that one). Last winter I went to karaoke after having bronchitis and tried to sing It Was by Chely Wright and my voice said NooOooO halfway through.. I've been more choosy since . LOL

I'm not real familiar with your standards (although I've heard Criminal) but I love "It Was".. I actually got myself a 6X6 to learn it but don't have the voice for it, sick or not :(

My signature song from the VERY BEGINNING(one of the VERY first I learned) is Van Morrison's Moondance---but it has to be the old Pioneer Laser version. Anything else just doesnt compare for sound quality on that tune(soundchoice inclueded). Plus the video is lots of fun AND has an UPRIGHT BASS sequence in it!!

I haven't seen a Pioneer Laser Disc in years! My favorite one to sing was No One Else on Earth (not one of my warm-up songs but it can be a great second song). I even loved the smarmy videos. The Pioneer CDGs just don't sound the same to me.

yeah, i use to use the PKLs a loooooonnnngggg time ago when i was using someone else's system. i loved them because most of the arrangements were pretty close to the original. Feed Jake was one that always got requested for me to do. I enjoyed the videos that went with them too. Remember, "Play That Funky Music"? that one was hilarious!

Feed Jake always made me cry. We didn't have Play That Funky Music but I am sure it was good.
Matt, when you make it to Dallas (and it had better happen!) bring your PC.
EDIT: Kurt, you have to sing Moondance for me sometime. I LOVE that song!

Gigi--if i tried to sing it off CDG it would truly be an INJUSTICE and INSULT to you and your musical sensibilities my dear!! So the only other solution is that YOU WILL JUST HAVE TO COME TO PORTLAND AND SEE ME SING IT LIVE and perform my famous air-upright bass rendition on the bridge!!! LMAO LMAO LMAO
There's LOTS AND LOTS of people who play AIR-GUITAR--but there's only ONE PERSON that plays an AIR-UPRIGHT BASS!!

I will see if my company can close down a store in the Portland area so I can come up there next year.
I play a mean air tambourine myself; maybe we can jam.

How about Crazy? It's always a crowd pleaser.

Crazy is a problem. The song, I mean; that attitude is one I actively pursue.
Everyone does it, so even if you can get up there and belt it out like there is no tomorrow, people are going to be underwhelmed. The Rose is the same kind of song, even though I used to do it all the time out of sheer cussedness. And of course, every venue has its own personality; this is just the unwritten rule in my neck of the woods.

The thread wondered about songs that could fit into someones "comfort zone" when they are not feeling their best.
Now "in my neck of the woods", "Crazy" is always well-received and no one does the "Rose", one of my favorite songs along with "The Wind Beneath My Wings" (which someone did in sign language here last night).
