I still say you need to do some more home work before you screw this whole deal up.   Spend some time watching some good kJs in the area. (If ANY)    Watch what they do and how they do it.   Take the good things they do and leave the bad.

Practice can not hurt anything.      Get some.

If you want to make money over and above the money that the bar is paying you, then perhaps you should charge per song........

I was not looking at this as a way to make more money persay. I thought of it as a way to silence loudmouths that inevitablely whine and moan about certain singers saying how bad they were. I think a gong with $50 would be a good way to say "If you don't like it do something about it." The $50 price point would make it out of reach for most people to do arbitrarily (sorry for the spelling). and the $25 for the singer helps to soothe sore feelings. The $25 for the host was just something to do with the rest of the money. You could say the other 1/2 goes to the bartender.

And I would have the gong behind the bar, and make sure no one could hit it unless they paid the bartender up front.

I don't know if this would work or not. I never even thought about it till I read this thread. It just struck me as interesting.....

I have a different way of handling "hecklers".  And it doesn't involve money.  The stage area to the right our entrance is in a corner.  And I guess because of the acoustics, I am able to many times hear conversations that you wouldn't normally be able to hear.

When I hear someone heckle or even start complaining, I will go into my little "speech."
Something like this:

"Folks, believe it or not but because of the acoustics up here on the stage I quite often can hear things out there that you wouldn't think I can.  We are all here to have fun.  If we were great singers we wouldn't be here doing karaoke.  We'd be out on tour.  If you don't particular like the music your hearing; here are your options.  1.  Find a song you like and get up here and sing it.  2. If you can't sing, find someone to sing your song for you. And 3. If neither one of those options suits you,  then please be advise we have a front door and a back door. Take your pick and please leave. If you continue, we will choose for you."

I had a guy the other night who was there when I got to the club to set up.  Three hours later he gets up and comes up and tells me he's never heard such bad singing before. (he's drunk of course)  I've got the mic on and I make sure it's up where everyone hears what he is saying.  I finally cut him off and make the comment, "Well you've been here for 3 hours now.  Are you having problems finding the door out?"  Again, appaluse follows.  He leaves.

This of course always draws a round of applause. LOL

Woo Hoo! Finally an advantage of being a woman karaoke host. I've never had anyone threaten to hit me or start a fist fight with me. I did have a man push me into my amp because I turned down his volume. He wouldn't stop screaming on the mic. I warned him twice and when that didn't work I simply turned his volume way low. Needless to say that was a very bad move on his part. My regulars are very protective over me.

I still think choice words over the microphone are a karaoke hosts best defense against hecklers or problem people.

I have this gal that gets up on stage and dances with the singers and loves to grab the mic and start babbling. she is usually extremely drunk. I just say over the mic, "
Who's turn is it to watch Ann" or " Who is on Anne watch, please collect her". Her husband usually comes and gets her and everyone laughs. It is easier than me trying to get her off stage or pry the mic out of her hand for the next singer.

Fortunately I run a quality karaoke and the screaming drunks are few and far between.   Now the A**hole rate  is another story.    Every bar has one.

Yeah, yeah!  So basically you lie in pretty much every thing you say, or at least that's what we all are tending to believe at this point.  Especially when you state something then recant them to something else when you get caught.
Like my new tag line, got it just for you!
