Well considering I started out as a singer, I hope I'm able to sing at my shows. I qlmost always start out with my favorite cheeseball comment, "Just to show you that you do not have to be GOOD to sing karaoke, I will get it started." I usually then do a nice easy song- usually some kind of familiar chorus song, and get people going. After that, I try to put myself at the top of the rotation. It helps people get an idea where we are. If it is busy, I will only do a short song (NOrweign Wood), or verbally tell people we are back at the top. I also end with "Goodnight Sweetheart". I know it's cheesy, but works for me....

People that get into hosting BECAUSE they like to sing is the wrong reason IMO.  I like to sing as well, but will not do it my show EXCEPT for the opening song, if it's slow-no singers or if I get requested to do so.  I never stick myself in the rotation as every song I sing because I want to takes 1 slot away from someone else.  I'm not being paid to sing, I am being paid to make sure the paying customers that are there in the bar that hired you to make sure they get to sing - sing!
However, I know hosts do sing, & if you do you should never sing anymore or sooner than any other singing that has been waiting their time.

Lonnie, since you've done it a while, and most likely alot of your crowd consider themselves to know you well...... don't you think they might LIKE it if you join in?

Granted, there are some singers who go to karaoke JUST to get themselves heard, and they have no fun until their turn is called.... but lots of people go to hear others, and for the whole comraderie of the night.

If I ever came to your show, I'd be disappointed if you didn't join in.  :(

As I said, IF I am requested to sing I will at the end of the round - i'm not requested very often, except for duets.  MOST actually appreciate the fact that I don't to be honest.  They ask why don't I sing like any other host, I try to explain I am not here to sing, I am here to make sure you sing & if I sing because I feel like it, I may not be able to get to someone that IS here spending & waiting for their turn.  They are actually most appreciative & understand & have become regulars - whether that's part of the reason or not, I don't know.

If I want to sing, I will come in on my off night or go to friends shows or go check out shows that are supposedly 'killer'.

Some KJ's can really energize the crowd and make it a better show. They know when to sing and when not to. There really is no set guideline IMO. It mostly depends on what the night and crowd is like and how big the rotation is. I will agree that they should probably start singing to get the ball rolling at the beginning of the show.

As someone that's been to his shows, Lonnie is the consumate professional (unlike others on here posing as one, yet give no details to who and what they really are!), and it's a shame he doesn't sing much at his shows... but as busy as they get, I totally understand his reasoning!

Lonnie's a fantastic singer, and a pleasure to be around!

Maybe I should clarify a little.....

I was such a regular at singing, that I eventually started helping the KJ pack up. That led into helping her run the controls so she could mingle and have someone else do the technical stuff. Then when she went out of towm, I was the natural choice to substitute.

Long story short, thats how I made the jump from singer to host.

I will only sing in rotations of less than 8 singers. I also let people do 2 at a time, so if I throw 1 in, they usually don't mind. I also like to 'help' singers. I will turn my headset on low and sing in the background. Only once have I been asked to stop in 3 years. That usually gives me all the singing I need for the night....

My sentence that KJs should never sing was sarcasm.   They should sing and do it well.    They need to be able to entertain the nonsingers.     NO need for CD dance music.

Maybe those non-singers WANT cd dance music & don't want to hear you?  WHo knows, you might drive them away BY singing.  But then you already stated you don't have a dance floor, most of the places i've played always had a dance floor.

I like the option of CD music, thus the reason for the Saturday KJ/DJ idea. It might not happen with the CD music right away, but I see it blending in down the road. I hope to open up my dance floor some. Its pretty small now, but I'll arrange the tables and chairs for a small dance floor. Eventually get some (mushroom?) lights to help set it off. Just starting off now with 4 par cans for the stage lighting.
Got a used computer control desk from work (they're upgrading computer control centers) that will allow me to set my mixer and eventual desktop/laptop cotrol side by side and look much more professional. Its starting to come together, saving more space to be used for a bigger dance floor.

I was doing fridays at my buddy's place...always crowded on that day, and it would take forever to push through to the bathroom, so many times, I would just stay up  there for 4 or 5 hours straight. I'd sing the first song to get things started about 10pm(my bedtime usually)...and before I finish the song, I'll have more than a dozen slips placed in my hand.....my singing is done, and I'll be playing catch up the rest of the night. Another guy did tuesdays, with a much smaller crowd for the same money, so I told my buddy, the other kj can have my fridays too. Then my buddy dropped to only friday nights for karaoke.
I do private parties, and I sing, and play some dance tunes, for most of it, but about an hour before the party ends, everybody now decides they want to sing...lol....alcohol finally kicks in.....I let a few sing, and then I'm gone.....
I do some weddings(no karaoke usually).....the money is good, but I feel a lot of pressure, and usually I have to move everything along......and it seems like it takes for ever to put up my lights, not much better taking them down....I'm getting to old for this....... :(

I've been doing something different lately on my slower night (Saturday). When the rotation is low I'll put myself in the rotation, but when it is my turn to sing I'll invite someone to come sing with me. This way I can get a newbie up there or a veteran that can help me light up the crowd. I really enjoy singing with people. Many of my regulars have a favorite duet they like to do with me. This way they don't have to give up their turn to do so.

Should a KJ Sing? - Absolutely !
Should a KJ Sing Often ? - Depends on rotation and crowd factors
Should a KJ Sing TOO MUCH- NEVER EVER !!!!

A KJ should NEVER sing two songs while there is 1 person with a slip in waiting to sing their 1st song. !

And if in doubt whether there are too many people to sing or not, there probably is & then you shouldn't!

I avoid shows where the kj thinks they are the reason people come back & sing throughout the rotation.  Nothing but egotistical attitudes that think they are better than everyone else!
