If you're any good at karaoke, you'll get jobs because you're good.   Not because you play over.      :O

Exactly!  I play over as a service to our singers on my time!

My service to my singers is, they get to sing on the best system around.      They sound as good as possible.      They appreciate the fact that I spent a lot of money to make them sound good.    Nobody in this area can mix like I do.     I have many professionals and could be professionals that sing on my stuff.   They know the difference.     Playing over doesn't necessarily do it.     They can go anywhere and everywhere, to sound crappy.    They come to me to sound great.    Now that's customer service.     It's why I work steady.     It's why 4 bar owners want me to guit jobs and go with them, right now.      Has nothing to do with playing over.      It's the "quality" of the time I play.     Not how long.

I think it's a wonderful thing to do for your patrons. It sounds like Lonmans people appreciate him for it.
My problem was no matter what time I closed up they still wanted me to stay longer and did not appreciate it. I had to put my foot down. Now I make an extra $100 - $150 a week to stay later. I guess it is a selfish choice. The funny thing now is people thank me for staying later and I get paid. Wierd !

You have to decide if the money is worth it.    Sometimes the money doesn't matter and other times it does.    Playing for free is a different matter.     At least you're getting something for your time.

The singers will use you if they can.

Our bar doesn't go past 2 for karaoke.  I play from 8:30 to 1.  If the crowd is good, which it is more than not; the bar pays me $50 for an extra hour.  My agreed time is actually from 9 - 1.  HOWEVER, I start at 8:30 and do my "free" time during that 1st 30 minutes.  What this accomplishes, is that my older regulars who may not stay as late, come out then and usually get to sing a little more that way.  You have to start a party to have a party. And also I keep the bar from changing my time to say  9:30 - 1:30 and then only having to pay me $25 for the last thirty minutes.

Comes under the crazy (IDIOT) bar owners heading.

Karaoke hasn't been on the sign for 7 weeks now.    The bartender's husband questioned the bar owner about the sign.   He said everyone knows we have karaoke.    He still has the ad for the 56" TV.   Doesn't everyone have a TV yet?   Homeless people have TVs.     Not everyone has karaoke.    Could the crowd be bigger?   Yes   Could he make a lot more money?   Yes   What part of this don't I understand?

I'm gonna be advertising Karaoke out the ying yang....signs on 3 sides of building facing the roadway/traffic areas...newspapers(2)...college newspaper etc. Its the best $$$ maker I'll have. I've got 2 pool tables, electronic golf machines (2) juke box, big screen, 5 smaller sets etc. Its foolish not to advertise.
]I will keep going till close...however I do have another F/T job, so sleep does come into play. Bar owners put in A LOT of time...they do get tired, but if I'm pulling in $$$ on a good night, I'll close the doors and everyone can party a little later...just have to slowly wind it down. The law sux...if I was a casino...I could do whatever I wanted. My 2 cents.

I have had many shows that ran longer than the time hired for without asking for extra.

What is an extra hour in most cases?

Most times I would have to wait till the people left anyway to get my equipment out.

There are other times though when a show should end on time. So the people can clean up and get home.

It sounds like the owner was tired and you should have respected his wishes.

To answer your question I make $50 an hour if I go over time.

I did not know the reason he didn't want to pay me to stay over until after closing time and when he told me I didn't disagree or even mind. It just so happens the regulars paid me because they didn't want me to go. The bar is open until 3am if I'm there or not. If he would of told me I need to quit at a certain time, I would have.  :D
