This week I participated in a new kind of competition- a host competition! It is basically 15 weeks long, and every week another local host has a shot at running the show. The 'judges' are the bartender, at least 1 other participant, and some bar patrons. Hosts are being judged on sound quality, books, appearence, and personality. My luck- before the 1st song of the night, one side of my amp shuts down so I need to run in mono all night!

It was fun, and I doubt I won, seeing as one of their regular hosts was also a contestant the week before, but it was different. The bar paid a small amount, which is better than doing it for free or sitting at home on a Monday night. The grand prize is a trip for two to Cancun, plus bragging rights that you are the #1 karaoke host in South Florida.

The decision night should be fun, having a bunch of hosts as patrons all drinking, singing and critiquing. Should be some good vocals that night! If anyone is interested, I think there is 1 or 2 weeks left before the finals. Feel free to PM me for the details if you are in the area!!!

PS- I bet there are some hosts here that would love to run this in their area, and I would be happy to giver you the rest of the details. I did not organize this, but think it is brilliant!

Sounds like a job interview. The ones who are brilliant are the bar owners who are getting 15 weeks of karaoke on the cheap!!

DBK, where in South Florida are you?? I KJ in St. Petersburg, FL, which is sometimes considered South Florida and sometimes considered Central FL.

A smart bar owner - now that's something different.
LMAO

Sort of the battle of hosts instead of the battle of the bands. The only difference is the prize is work.

It would be a lot of fun to visit all night with other hosts. It's like a mini convention.

I am in the Ft Lauderdale area. Actually the competition was staged by the regular Monday night host. She gets her normal pay for the night, takes a small portion, and gives the rest to the KJ. They are not getting anything on the cheap. I figured it was a Monday night and had nothing better to do.  So basically she is a booking agent. If the bar is smart, then they will hire the winner and say we have "The Best Karaoke in South Florida!"

I know there are a lot of areas overflowing with karaoke hosts, and I would love to see some of the real pros here compete.

DBK,

It's good to see you posting on the board again. How's everthing going for you & the wife?

Very interesting concept. But I have a few questions:

Does each host use the house system or bring in just their coffin and plug into their speakers or bring in their full systen?

Can a host from Central FL come down and compete in this...... LOL .... and what if he/she wins?...... LMAO

I could probabally come down for a few days since it's on a Monday night, since you came up here and visited my show, I would reciprocate of visiting your area.

:D

Oooh send me details! One of our local watering holes has recently contracted a case of Boring Host Syndrome complicated by Empty Tables. What a good way for the bar to build business AND find a good jock!

It is pretty simple actuall, which is probably why it is so effective....

Each host brings their own full system. They set up and run the show from 9-1. This is the last week of the current competition. We will find out the winner 11/27.

Basically, the organizing host put out an email to all the area hosts inviting them to compete. Surprisingly it didn't fill up at first. Then some that scheduled didn't show. Professional, huh?

The way the pay worked was you get $100 for the show. I'm pretty sure she got the other $25-50. The bar tab was covered, and I was even given a few T-shirts to give away however I saw fit. It was fun and something easy to replicate.

You guys gotta let me know if you decide to try this in other areas- if it's close enogh I may have to be the 'Guest Judge' for a night...lol

Sometimes there are things that are more important than money. Like doing something just for fun. It sounds to me that this would be in that category. Being able to host in front of other karaoke hosts and mingling with people who do what you do for a living would be fun to me.

It was a lot of fun. Before the competition began they had a meet and greet for the hosts. The concept was to creat unity in the community, and provide a chance to meet other hosts incase you ever need a cover or run across a show you can't take. I think it strengthened our Karaoke host communnity here....

It's one way to find out who the hacks are, so you won't refer them to anyone.

BD on hack patrol again.
Please if you find one on here will you let me know?
Because I haven't seen any yet. Unfortunately in my mind you are always preaching to the choir.

I guess I am just lucky I haven't had any so called hacks hurt my business. They don't bother me and I don't bother them. There are hacks in every business. It is a part of life. Do you really think all your complaining has made a dent in the fact there are hacks? Do you think people on here don't know what they are?

The best way to combat a hack is run a good show with good equipment, dah. If you are doing that already. What's the problem?

You have given several examples of how that has worked for you. Complaining about it on this site has gotten you no where, but it has managed to insult almost everyone. You have been told this several times. Either you enjoy the drama or you are a little slow on the up take.

Johnny Bab's looks alone probably warrant the difference!  If I tried to take over her show the most I'd probably get would be $100 a night LMAO

There are hacks in every profession.  People who are good at what they do don't have to worry about hacks.  At least I don't.  If you are worried about your competition; there is probably a good reason why.  If you can't handle the pressure then maybe one needs to find another line of work.

Please be advised though, I don't consider myself a "karaoke god" so take that advice for what it's worth to you.

Kelly

If you knew anything, you would know that the hacks keep the price down for everyone.     I should get $300 a show at least, but because of the $100 hacks that won't happen.     I still have the best show, but bar owners think the lowest price is the best show.
