Well I have been gone for a while, but I have a question for you bigdog, when you rail against filler music, are you saying:
1. You prefer dead air while the person walks up to the stage from the back of the room?
2. You don't mind dead air in between songs while they cue up? or
3. You don't like it when people pause for no reason to play an entire dance song?
Personally, I use 'filler' for the first 2. If it is the 3rd reason, I am with you on that.
Just trying to clarify....

For some strange reason I don't have problems with idiots at my show. Must be the intimidating moustache. That and 6ft , 280 of retired MP. A look does it.

DBK, I never have to wait for the next singer. Dead air sucks. They always have a microphone in hand ready to go.
Never use a stage.
2 machines for nonstop karaoke music. A song is always ready to play.
I do not have a need to play dance music, ever. I can entertain all of the people in the crowd with pure karaoke music. Wasting singers time with dance music sucks.
You're talking to a professional. Want to join the Bigdog Professional KJ club? It takes money and good equipment. I'll teach you how to run a continuous karaoke show. With no dead air ever. No filler/dance music, ever.
Any other questions for the pro? It's open season. :worship:

Wow.....been off the boards for a while and suddenly treated like a newbie....
If it is open season, I do have a few questions...
1) If you don't have a stage, how do people get that special feeling of being the center of attention for 5 minutes?
2) How do you have magic singers that never change their mind when it's their turn thus forcing you to scrap the cued song and have dead air?
3) Is it hard finding bars with a door big enough to fit your ego? (j/k...sorta)
4) And lastly, I am sure a host of your stature and professionalism has an amazing website showcasing your good equipment. Can you share the link so we can all be in awe in comparison to our piddly ones? I was shocked it was omitted from your profile.

He don't use stages because they are unprofessional.
He don't advertise or use any websites either, nor does he disclose the clubs he works at. Funny you should mention 'magic singers', I guess they would have to be magic to know where to go.
Someone just listed all his equipment in another thread. Nothing fancy & improperly connects. Subs & tops have no crossover between them & 1 amp running all.

And least we forget he/she uses the EQ as a preamp.

1. They are the only ones singing in to the microphone for 5 minutes. They have the spotlight, nobody else.
2. If you use 2 machines and someone changes their mind, how do you play filler music?
The next singer has the mike. If Yo Yo changes their mind, I immediately start the next singer. Then I will get back to Yo Yos song.
3. My professional ego can fit in any door, with welcome arms.
4. No web site. Don't need one. Not a computer geek. No time to constantly keep a site fresh and up-to-date. Like most out of date web sites. Having NO web site looks more professional than having an out-of-date one. I work 5 nights a week. Can not handle more work. I have 4 bar owners that want me to quit shows to go with them, right now. They didn't see me on a web cam. They come see me live. You may need a web site.
Keep the questions coming. I'll teach you everything you need to know.

BD...
I hate to be the bearer of logic, but there are some laws in physics. One of them is that an object cannot occupy 2 spaces at the same time. If you are using 2 players, with one song playing, and next cued, and the cued singer changes his mind when you hand him the mic or the song starts, he flakes. You just had one song playing, so you couldn't have a 3rd singer cued. That means dead air to me.....
As far as how I handle it, I have a mixing board with a pocket cd player hooked up. It is adequate enough to play background music on a channel that is kept low or off until needed. I keep a few CD's with current pop and classic dance to play for flakes and incorrect #'s, etc.
Simple logic......

I understand......you line the singers on stage, 10 at a time, and when one finishes, a new one takes the 10 spot.......

I hate to break your karaoke bubble... I use more than 1 microphone. So your logical illogical assumption is all wrong.
So I most certainly can go directly to the next singer and while they sing their song I can exchange Ding Dongs song for the one they really wanted to sing. No need for C.M.A. filler music. Just non stop, continuous karaoke music like any porfessional KJ.

Sorry BD, but he makes sense. If you are in the crowd handing someone a mic and it is not the right song, to move on to the next singer you would have to return to your equipment to cue up the next singer. Not to mention hand the mic over to someone new. There is no way you can do all that without dead air.

I don't really mind filler music if it is just in the background as the KJ goes from one singer to the next. Sometimes if the singer sang a slow, sad song the filler kind of picks up the atmosphere for the next singer. Occasionally I don't mind if the KJ takes a break and plays filler music while he is away...but that is about the extent of it when I go to karaoke. I don't like music tracks playing just for the sake of it, or for people to dance really. However that's just personal preference. When I go to karaoke I go to sing - not dance, or listen to commercial recorded music. I can get that anywhere anytime.

He makes nothing....
Start from the singer that isn't brain dead and is singing the song they wanted to sing.
While they are singing, I load the next song and run a microphone out to the next singer. At that time I can also give a microphone to the 3rd singer. So if brain dead changes their mind they can tell me when I give them the microphone. No dead air, no filler music. I'm a self-trained professional, remember?
Why is non stop, continuos karaoke music so hard to comprehend? It's not Rocket Surgery... NO filler music means no filler music, ever. No dead air means no dead air. Your methods need some work. Mine are perfected.

Sorry BD, my bad. I just can't imagine having that many microphones loose in the crowd. Especially as expensive as yours are. You're more trusting than me.

As I stated before....With my professional sounding system, I have always attracted singers that are more serious and more talented than most. I do not attract the screaming drunk crowd. This is where my practice of controlling the crowd comes in to play. It's why my song book is edited. I sing sometimes to control the crowd. All designed to maximize the fun and lessen the destruction.
