Great information and suggestions...Don't know that I would want to put together an actual convention...But it sure would be fun to attend one of the DJ conventions and at least see what that is all about... The one you would want to attend one to see the fun that happens at DJ conventions, would have to be the Mobile Beat Convention in Las Vegas, this year it's at the South Point Hotel & Casino on Feb. 20-22. The old hotel where it was last year was demolished to make way for a brand new facility. There is one DJ / karaoke host from your neck of the woods, Witchita Falls(SP?), TX that always attends Vegas, "Mad" Joe Martin, an older gentleman, great guy to be around. Now he can tell ya stories about the DJ conventions in Vegas.... And he's real good at the craps tables, if you are real nice he can show you how to play the game. Like karyoker said, most people attend to network with other professionals, exchange of ideas,(seminars), check out the kewl new toys, but mostly the comraderie and friendships that you make at conventions is the best thing you can get out of them. You actually get to put a face and a personality to the people you meet online, just like that get together you had a little while back. But the real fun is the parties: the sponsors, equipment manufacturers and the smaller hotel room parties are great. Just remember if you decide to go........WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS, STAYS IN VEGAS........
Went to Mobile Beat two years ago.. Met Mad Joe, and the rest.. Vendor booths a bit small..
Some clown kept trying to "Buy" other groups.. Jerk the way I read him..
Now, two years later, I hear stories about this same clown/jerk being sued..
Seems he didn't produce anything, yet took cash.. What else is new?) LMAO

OK...So I am confused....Keep in mind Bigdog that it wasn't that long ago that I actually defended you...However of late I have been trying to ignore your post and not responding....However, I have to ask these questions...I could go back through the threads and find the quotes but I am short on time (gotta go sing), so I will just state what I remember.
Here goes....
Tell me how you could possibly be a speaker at a convention when you tell us on this site that you will not train people to work for you because they will steal your secrets and go and try and undercut you with inferior equipment and use filler music and such???
This does not make sense to me..I have no doubt that you are a good KJ and are proud of the work/product you produce (even though you hide). What topic could you possibly speak on related to Karaoke that someone wouldn't be able to take and use against you and become a hack??
Can you please enlighten me on this??? OH, and I'd like to know what convention that is?? Is it an annual thing?? Is it in the same location every year?? Does it cost anything to attend??

Isis, Isis, Isis, you know dogs have short attention spans. On one paw it (the majority of dogs are its) says it doesn't train anyone. On the other paw it says the puppies he's trained have been undercutted, the third paw is lost, and the fourth paw is up it's @$$ looking for the third paw.
Real hosts are not afraid of saying where they play and what they use.

My symposium was about pure karaoke, continuous, non stop, no filler/dance music 100% karaoke.
Total crowd entertaining.
Promotion of high quality karaoke.
Using a whole (not half) high quality karaoke system.
Keeping karaoke going for years to come.
How karaoke contests have a negative impact on crowd building.
Your business reputation and how to create and maintain a good one.
You know, all the things nobody on here cares about.

How do you do "Total crowd entertaining" when you have singers back to back without announcing anything? Don't you take time inbetween songs to pump up the crowd. What entertaining do you do?

And again, as it's been asked, where & what was this great seminar on karaoke held. Name of the seminar & who promotes it. If it's you, I can imagine why you won't disclose anymore info about other than you were the speaker.

So much for trying to get answers. I'm going back behind my cloud with Zeus!! I still a karaoke convention will be so much fun...Like I said I think I'll check out one of the DJ conventions...Maybe someone could talkj to one of those and see if they would be interested in expanding to include KJ's....

Getting back on topic
I used to be chair of a state safety conference (chaired it for 3 years) and unless there is an organization with the manpower to back it and registered members you won't ever get a national convention up and running. For our state we had to demonstrate that we could just about fill the convention center in order to get sufficient vendors to cover the facility rental. We had to guarantee enough paying attendees to cover the speakers fees.
The problem I see with a national convention is that we karaoke-junkies are too danged independent (I refer to Karayoker's threads this past summer) to do much. The national DJ association at least has the membership muscle to interest the vendors. They throw in karoake as a sideline because many DJ hosts also dabble in karaoke and much of the equipment is made by the same manufacturers.
The other reason is that getting speakers (many KJs do it as a sideline with their "9-5" job paying the main bills) to attend would be difficult. After all BD's bar would hire a cheaper replacement after they found out they could get one (sorry HAD to go there).

I don't know dsharrow, I understand what you're saying, but I think Karaoke has become widespread enough to support a convention - even a West Coast / East Coast Convention. Until the last four years, I moved around alot, and always found Karaoke. And if South Alabama has as many KJs as we DO have, I KNOW the metopolitan areas have a truck load plus.....I think it is sustainable.

I tend to agree. I think a karaoke convention would draw people. Hosts and singers.
If you look at some of the silly conventions we hold here in Chicaago you would agree. If people will come to a potato convention I'm sure we could get enough people to a karaoke convention. LMAO

I'm also referring to the hours required to put one together. Took us 2 full-timers and 10 volunteers to maintain communications, schedule, rent the vendor space, select the speakers, send out notices, etc., etc. We figured it took about the equivalent of 6 full-timers (based on hours worked) to put on a quality 3 day event.
