Ever go into a place and immediately get the vaugue feeling that you made a mistake going there? Is it just a general sense of unease, a certain type of vibe, maybe an attitude of the staff or the entertainment, the type of crowd?? All of the above?? In my case I have to go to MANY bars and can pretty quickly tell if its going to be a place I want to spend some time at and maybe go back to or just do my business and get out as quickly as I came. More often than not if I find that--then I will spend no more than 30 minss to maybe an hour at a place and then get the h ell out. Most recently theres a place like that Ive had to go to a couple times in the last month or so that it was a case of getting in and getting out as quickly as I could. Mostly it was a case of the vibe, not really feeling welcome, comments from people in the crowd, attitude of the DJ.
Thoughts, comments, similair experiences??

That has happened to me a few times. Sometimes, though, I'll go to a place and have a GREAT time, and then come back a few weeks later to the same place and have a lousy time.
(Actually I have not been karaoke-ing in a few weeks--I've been quite busy!)

In hostile countries bars can be a haven or pocket of protection... They can be an oasis and a social meeting place for locals.. In latin countries including Italy find a little bar a few blocks from a plaza or parkl and do as the romans do. The drinks will be considerably less than the tourists traps. Stroll into a wrong one like an opium den in Istanbul you are in trouble. Been there done that...
As far as vibes we spent an afternoon in a bar in Mont St Michel which is a castle off the coast awesome
My buddy made the comment we ars sitting in a bar that is over 1000 years old. The vibes there was almost overbearing yet they provided positive jolly moods.
Most bars esp little ones in this country are noting more than social meeting places for locals and occasional travelers passing through. In the bars in this area the patrons have known the owner all their life and knew the bartender all their life.. So they usually have good vibes But remember bars attract unsavories and the vibes in any socail place can change from bad to worse This can even happen in a church...
I grew up in an .era when kids were not raised in a pickle jar and spent time in bars
There are those that dont or havt frquented many bars that have some fantasy about the evils in bars but at any given time one can find more religion or help in a bar than a church.. Bars in themselves can be an inticate social setting and all vary with the time of day.. In the morning it is the hair of the dog crowd ( I use to have a saying "You meet the the most interesting on a bar stool before noon"). In the aft is the daytime crowd which blendsinto the happy hour crowd. Then the night time which most here are familiar with..
Heed your instincts for they are a defense which peaks in hostile situations...

We got shore duty at WSMR in southern New Mexico and was driving through Mississippi and stopped in a bar in Meridian.. It was full of rednecks with knives and guns hanging on their belts. After a few beers and right during the lull in the jukebox I eas screaming "Oh hell after the civil war all the smart and rich prople moved north" My buddy threw me over his shoulder and made a mad dash for the back door. We were chased out town by 6 pickup trucks ..... About 20 miles out of town I looked at Plyler "Boy I pissed them off"... LMAO

The only time I have felt that way is in contest situations. Nothing against people who do them, it is just my small experience with them. I don't usually do contests, but sometimes you don't know they are having them when you go to a bar. I basically just want to sing, so if they are doing a contest and I am there I will join up for the ride. I just get this hostile vibe in the room. People only want to clap for their person because it helps them in the contest. People look at you as competition instead of let's all have a good time together. It is a cold atmosphere. People are there for business. I don't take it that seriously.

Yes, once years ago, that happened to me in Keizer. I don't recall the name of the place, we just were scoping out new spots and walked in there. After 45 minutes of hard rock and punk music, I told my hubby.... "uh, if I put up a Loretta Lynn or Tanya tucker they're gonna hang me from the rafters".... so I chose not to stay there. It was all just a matter of the type of crowd they drew.... but when you walk in wearing old faded jeans and cowboy boots and the crowd is all stilettos and wierded out spiked hair, and piercings on every part of thier face..... yeah, you get a queer feeling you don't belong.
Connors in Wilsonville was that way too, but I had my bro & my sis with me (who also sing mostly country songs) so I sang there, since I wasn't the only one doing that style of music. I think they've shut down now anyhow. But it was predominantly alternative style music. (some of that stuff is really wierd... )

One time I walked in a place, and there was a freaky dude sitting in a chair playing that theme from Deliverance on a gi-tar.....another guy turned to me and said, what sounded to me like....boy, you gotta pretty mouth....I grabbed the wife by the hand, and we ran to the car, and took off. We're about a half mile away, and she's laughing.....i said, what the heck are you laughing at.....she said(laughing)....I sure would have enjoyed hearing you squeel like a pig....... :( :( :( :(

Connors has been out of biz for about 3 yrs now. The old owner sold it becuase he had milked the place dry by constantly over-comping his freinds so he had run up horrendous debts with the place. Sold it to a younger guy who compleltly remodeled and enlarged it --but by that time the clientele had been drivin away and the place suddendly just locked up and shut the lights.

Once between divorces 2 friends and I went out toghether. We walked into this bar we had never been to. Right after we entered we did a quick evaluation of the situation. We could see no women in the bar. Just guys playing pool. Now the place wasn't know to be a gay bar. I don't think it is or ever was, but we were looking for women. :O Anyway we had a quick talk between us and decided we didn't want to stay to buy a drink. When we turned around to leave someone yelled at us "What's the matter you think you're to good for us?" They started coming toward us. We ran the whole way to the car and took off. Could have been a "Deliverance" moment.

Usually my reaction will be more SUBTLE than that----if you ever hear me make the remark that "I cant stay--Im on a tight schedule or deadline"--------well what that REALLY means is that either I dont feel welcome, dont feel comfortable there, or just dont feel like Im really wanted there. Again this was my response to someone that asked me why I was leaveing so early. Told them I was on a tight deadline and had to be somewhere........but the truth of the matter was that I didnt feel welcome or wanted there.........both from the KJ and the vibe from the people that I had met before at this place. This is a place Ive visited a couple times in the past month or two. Usually after leaving I will head out to somewhere that I do feel comfortable at even if it is a 35-40 min drive each way.

I had a gid at this British Pub, and after 3 weeks the pub was sold. The new owner saide she wouldn't mind keeping it going, but to give it a week to settle before coming back. I come back after the week off, prop open the door, and as soon as I bring in the first speaker, there is a guy groaning about why there had to be karaoke there. He got so obnoxious while I was setting up, he asked how much they were paying me and offerred to pay it just so I would leqave and he didn't have to hear it. He procceed to sit in the front and heckle all night, have his fingers in his ears and boo. When I asked the owner to say something, she told me it was her hubbby!
Needless to say that was the last show there, but the last 1/2 of the nigvht was horrendous.......

Now.... hmmm..... WHY do I suddenly feel like I'm having a finger pointed at me?
You're not talking about Denny's are you? Cause we're not like that. We just drink, sing, and have fun.... EVERYbody is made to feel welcome there. And you DID scoot out the door kinda early with some lame excuse about "I gotta be somewhere" last time I saw you there. You up for a whuppin' or something, Kurt?
You need to come more often... and hang out and get to know everyone there... mosy around and meet people. Hell, you didn't even SIT at my table.... you sat across the room by yourself. That's no fun. :(
But... I wont "assume" you were talking about Denny's.... assuming gets people into trouble:) haha.... me, anyhow. I thought you had fun there, jazzing & bluesing the place up a bit:)

But I think maybe Kurt thinks we're boring.

Okay, Odie, what was all that....
"I'm your buddy"
"I got your back"
"I'll always stand behind you"
blabber all about?
Oh. I'll bet your off listening to songs, aincha? You're not really here. Well, you're "here".... but not "really" here. You've tuned us out. Gotcha.
Just so you don't all think I'm (that much of) a blabbering idiot:

Oh sorry about that! I got stuck there and then wandered off to answer e-mails.
Well the only way I ever get to feel comfortable at a place is if I give it atleast two or three tries. First impressions aren't always accurate. Maybe you picked a weird night to show up. If you're talking about that Halloween night at Denny's, people are bound to be acting pretty different then how they normally would.
