I am not sure about Karaoke convetion, but there is a large DJ convention that goes on every year and they display many of the Karaoke equipment at that convention. It's mostly for DJs but I find few people who do DJ/KJ attend and find some gems there. I don't have the information but I am sure you can find it using Google.

We have so many big conventions in Chicago I am surprised I've never heard of some sort of KJ or Dj one. I have to admit it has crossed my mind too.

Actually, they kinda do, but they revolve around "contests" always.
There is a place called Online Karaoke Network (place your dot com here) who are taking a survey to see about starting one (a karaoke convention and/or cruise) . Would be kinda fun, but of course would be halfway across the states from ME most likely, so I'd never get to go.

Eben is correct, but there are 3 BIG DJ conventions a year, mostly for DJ's and have 1 or 2 seminars about karaoke at a few of them.
Mobile Beat has their biggest convention in Feb, in Las Vegas, their summer convention, which is smaller, is in June, but moves around it's location every 2 years. They had it here in Orlando for 2 years, now they are up in the northeast (NY/MA) area last/this year.
DJ Times has their one and only convention a year and it's a big one, in late Aug. / early Sept., in Atlantic City.
Smaller Regional Conventions:
WEDJ hosts a DJ Cruise, not sure when or where they cruise to & from.
Computer DJ Summit is a small convention, in Oct., in Tampa, more specialized, about computer technology in the mobile entertainment field, which includes DJ, VJ, and Karaoke.
Haven't heard or know too much about the Mid American DJ Conference, but if my memory is correct they had it in Texas one time.
This site sponsors Karaokefest....don't know anything about it.
-------------------------------------------------------------------
A karaoke only convention would be a good idea but:
Who would attend? Karaoke hosts, singers, general public who knows/likes karoke?
What vendors / sponsors could the organizers sign up? Vocopro, Sound Choice, Chartbusters?
What location would provide the best locaton for maximum attendance? East coast, West coast, Mid America?
When would be the best time of year to put one on? Definately not during the holiday season, summertime?
Financial consideration, would it be profitable for anybody to put on a karoke only convention? We are all in this business to make money and not go into a losing endeavour.
Just some of the logistics of any organization of trying to put a convention together that they would have to seriously consider.
Just my thoughts on this subject......

Karaoke Convention? Hmmm, not sure if I could deal with that. Hundreds of folks standing around telling each other how much better they are at singing 'Friends in Low Places'. :argue: :banghead:

Most professions Ive been in have had conventions/trade shows/ seminars either on a local /regional basis or national at Vegas or other spots. All concerned were there to see the new stuff and get an idea what was on the horizon. The conventions promoted the industry, tried to give everybody fresh ideas and ways to improve their business and profits Ideas and tricks from all over were exchanged to gain knowledge and make life easier. I forget which one it was but we had the top ten motivational speakers in the country there.
This industry needs one to dispel some of the myths concerning karaoke. The folks that dont go into bars have some wierd ideas what karaoke singers are all about. Many still think it is still just a bunch of drunks making fools out of themselves. This industry needs some positive promotion to get it out of that mind frame and get it in venues that familys can participate.. A few years ago a deputy sherrif had it in his mind that the local karaoke bar was a big drug den... Music=drugs. He came in and listened to a few singers and came over and actually complimented me on my singing He then asked what are you drinking? Oh Im not drinking tonight... Im in here to sing....
A convention of any type would change the general concept of what karaoke is and put it in a more favorable public light..

Cool! Great information and suggestions...Don't know that I would want to put together an actual convention...But it sure would be fun to attend one of the DJ conventions and at least see what that is all about...

Given how verbose you usually are, you sure can be close-mouthed sometimes. I won't even go into the "Speak! Speak! Good boy!" routine I immediately thought of when you said you were a guest speaker.
Who hosts the convention? Any chance of it coming to Dallas? Details, man, details!

The one you would want to attend one to see the fun that happens at DJ conventions, would have to be the Mobile Beat Convention in Las Vegas, this year it's at the South Point Hotel & Casino on Feb. 20-22. The old hotel where it was last year was demolished to make way for a brand new facility.
There is one DJ / karaoke host from your neck of the woods, Witchita Falls(SP?), TX that always attends Vegas, "Mad" Joe Martin, an older gentleman, great guy to be around. Now he can tell ya stories about the DJ conventions in Vegas.... And he's real good at the craps tables, if you are real nice he can show you how to play the game.
Like karyoker said, most people attend to network with other professionals, exchange of ideas,(seminars), check out the kewl new toys, but mostly the comraderie and friendships that you make at conventions is the best thing you can get out of them. You actually get to put a face and a personality to the people you meet online, just like that get together you had a little while back.
But the real fun is the parties: the sponsors, equipment manufacturers and the smaller hotel room parties are great.
Just remember if you decide to go........WHAT HAPPENS IN VEGAS, STAYS IN VEGAS........

I did a search to see if Chicago had any Karaoke or DJ conventions. I came up with a big zero. I am just so surprised. We have everything from potato conventions to
dental conventions. You'd think if they could have one for potatoes they could have one for karaoke.

Yes, Chicago, NY, FL, CA have many conventions but the one they seem to favor now days is Las Vegas. It's glitz factor and it has enough room to accommodate any convention. With new mega hotels with 3000+ rooms going up every year, room is not a problem either. I did attend a convention in Chicago before. I liked the city but nothing compares to LV. Just my opinion.

I've been to a couple conventions in Las Vegas. They weren't for karaoke though.
The main reason we went was because we wanted the business vacation. Las Vegas is a blast! The convention is always secondary.
