part 1- a customer brings thier own disc and wants to sing off it.  how do i accomplish this without stopping the show to import thier song to the library.

part 2- since i haven't purchased this song, what is the legality of importing it to my library?

No problem.  You can do this while some is singing another song.  There is no stopping the show.  And second, this only records into temporary.  It doesn't go into your library. Once the song is played, it is no longer in your computer.

When the current song is playing, you load singers cd.  Click on cdg.
Fill in track title to import.  Change the key if necessary, singer name & song title.  Then click add track.  It will load & do a import to a temp file as the current song is playing, then you are good to go.
Or just use an external player for customer discs, this way no one is getting accused of making a copy of their personal discs.

I'm confused.  Hoster can't directly play a CDG????
You have to "rip" the CDG for Hoster to be able to play it?

I wouldn't say that it is actually ripping it.  As Lonman said it copies the song into a temp file.  Once played it's gone.  One other little way to limit piracy.

thanks, guys!  i knew i could count on y'all.  i tried to play a customer's disc last night and i had to import it to the hard drive first, but I didn't have it set on cgd to read the disc.  that  makes sense.

Limit piracy....LOL LOL  that's a good one.

But seriously, it can't directly play a CDG disc without importing a file on the computer?

No.....LOL Well you have to admit, if it ain't your disc, you shouldn't be keeping it on you computer.  And the only music you are playing is what is on your computer.  It does eliminate having to have a separate player.  Hoster wasn't designed as a simple player. Made to play your digital files.

Just ribbing ya about the piracy thing, not because you said it, but MTU has said that there KMA format is designed to help stop piracy.  The ONLY way that it does that is casue very few use the KMA format, compared to mp3+g format, and therefore there is no "sharing" (aka piracy) of the KMA format.

But I digress from the thread, so I will stop.

I still is unbeliveable that they haven't incorporated a direct player of CDG discs into Hoster.  Ya thing that is somthing they would want.  IT has to take up a bit of procesing powere to import/rip the song to a temp file while hosting a show.

No problem.  I took it as friendly ribbing.   I have been using MTU since around 2001.  I have several times had the opportunity to talk to Doug and them at MTU.  Personally I think they are a great bunch.  And I have to say they really are determined to provide products that meet up with technology, while at the same time keeping the illegal aspects in mind.  Main reason they work with the kma process.  Which I have to admit from what I have heard is better quality than the others.  Oh well, off my soap box.  I'm sure in time "BD" will tell us what we are all doing wrong. LMAO

Although the new microstudio is capable of ripping KMA files now so there goes that can of worms.

They probably could make it so you could read straight fron the cd. But if they did, then you couldnt move it on the playlist .  With it the way it is if someone want to skip it now, and sing it later they can.

also, You may have several singers wanting to sing off their own disk. All of them can be added, and played as they need to be.

I can't speak for MTU but I played with this feature an couldn't get a dependable read from the CD.  Even good plextor drives are not specifically designed for reading karaoke files.  If you're going to cache far enough ahead to detect error and re-read the graphics data, you may as well rip the whole thing at the start and be done with it.  Much less chance of problems.  Personally, I think it's time to get rid of CDG for karaoke.

The question was in essence "Why doesn't MTU play directly from disk?" (it might as far as I know I don't use MTU.)  However, in developing a direct from disk player for my software, I found that I could not get a dependable read from various CD players I was using as my test group.  I therefore determined that a better and all around faster solution was to rip the entire song.  I was supposing that MTU concluded the same thing (not saying they did.)  But it is time to get rid of CDG for computer based karaoke.  It's just a pain!

In another thread, I had asked about how one could play CDG's on a computer directly from a cd-rom drive.  It seems that the best advice I was given in that regard was to try Powerkaroake.  Would this MTU software provide a better approach?  Remember, I'm wanting to leave my karaoke machine behind when I go out to parties and play my disks and the disks of others on my computer.  How much does the MTU software cost?

MTU's Hoster lite is $99

Microstudio is $39.00

Hoster would be a karaoke hosting program. microstudio would also be able to play the cd's

Go to WWW.mtu.com and take a few minutes and read about it and decide for yourself........

It doesn't play DIRECTLY from the machine no.  What it does is imports the disc into a temp file - rather quickly, then it basically plays as it would from the hard drive without actually having to rip it TO hard drive.  You can load up songs as current songs are playing.

The Lite version is about $100 if I recall.

As I learned, as a result of another thread I had started, an external drive on my laptop along with Powerkaroake Pro Player software allows me to directly play my cdg disks on my lap top.  It also has a key changer which you pros need.
