Check out these top 100 high resolution images taken by the Hubble: http://www.spacetelescope.org/images/archive/top100/ . Don't forget to click on them, and then click again to zoom further. This is especially good for those of you with a good video card and a high resolution flat panel monitor.
Realize that many of the "stars" you see in many of the pictures are entire galaxies made up of hundreds of billions of stars each. Keep in mind each of these primary pictures you probably couldn't even see at all with your naked eye. They would only be one micro speck in the entire night sky. Many if not most of these stars (within the galaxies) will have planetary systems around them. There will likely be a very, very large number of Earth like planets containing water and perhaps a similar moon around a large percentage of these stars.
The Universe is so vast it is pretty much incomprehensible by us.
Bill

Well, you definately have lived up to your name with these pics, planet_bill! I'm always amazed by the fantastic "colors" the universe produces in images like these. Still glad that Musgrave(?) fixed that lens, so we could see stuff like this.
Girlfriend just told me to tell you that those pics are COOL! Still curious about something: If a tree fell in Galaxy NGC 2403, would anyone hear it... in 11 million light years?

Yeah, with all the stuff mentioned for hobbies on my profile I forgot to list astronomy as one of them. But I agree, those pictures are just insanely beautiful to me - WOW! Sometimes it's fun to read about all the crazy realities of physics and the universe like general relativity and quantum mechanics - string theory, etc. The Universe is very strange indeed. Dare I say it...stranger than those of us on KS Forums! There, I said it.

Thanks for the link Bill. I downloaded a bunch of their cropped to desktop size pics, about 235 or so.

Last night I caught the last few minutes of a Nova episode on PBS about Supercolossal black holes, specifically the one at the center of the Milky Way (apparently the current belief in the cosmology community is that there are black holes at the center of every galaxy). They were talking about the fact that the Andromeda galaxy, the one nearest the Milky Way, is on a collision course with it, and the unthinkable destruction of our galaxy this will cause. This was presented in a very foreboding manner as if to frighten the viewer. They did point out, however, that this will happen in about 100 billion years. Heck, I might be dead by that time anyway.

Sorry Charm, if I could figure out how to pass Tequila shots to you through the monitor you know I'd be all over it. And you can bet it would only be 100% pure Blue Agave Tequila. Back in college I had a bit of a hobby trying to find the best tasting / cheapest Margarita in town. It was indeed a quest. As I recall one of my favs was the Texas Union margs on Thu night. They were only $.75 as I recall but still large and stout. Perhaps I need to take up the quest again. There are some great Margs down here in town. Chuys are very tasty Jorges are extremely strong and laced with Everclear. Baby A's has some good super strong ones too. Don't get me started..

Remember that these are composite images with many filters and exposure times imployed. Basically, many of these images were creating what any given photographer would call "camera tricks." A good bit of what you see as blue is ultraviolet light and what you see as red is infrared light, neither of which the human eye can see.
None of these pictures are what you would see through your naked eye if you were able to look at the actual subjects themselves, although anyone who knows anything about optics knows that color is relative and different for each and every different lens that you look through, including the human eye (and including different human eyes!!).
If someone tells you that your shirt is lime green, and you say it is orange, you could both be right!!
