I went with my newbies a while ago to see about getting them a gig.    The bar owner knew immediately who I was.   I think he thought I was sniffing for a job.     Anyway he wanted them to hook up to his "house" system.      It was OK for my house but not for the bar.      The newbie's tops were twice as big as his.     We would have had to plug into a box with some wires on top of the jukebox.     Our system is EQed for the speakers we have.   And it sounds really great.   So we didn't want to have to mess with our system, to get his to sound good, if you know what I mean.  

He must have taken offense to the fact that we shot down using his system.   They didn't get the gig and he hired a computer hack.    His reason, He had more songs.    The hack was more than willing to use the house system because it was way better than his and he was being lazy.    Just had to bring in the computer, mikes and amp, I think.

Sorry Mr. Bar Owner, but I will not compromise my sound quality to use your crap.

Unless that house system is better sounding than mine, I'm not using it.      Gig or no gig.     Then they would want to cut the money they pay you, because you didn't have to bring in all "your" stuff.     No dice pal.    :no:     My way or the highway.

Please tell me you are not surprised your newbie didn't get the gig.

Some battles are easier to fight from within; once you showed him he could make money with a karaoke gig, you could convince him to upgrade by actually letting him hear the difference between your stuff and his. That way he is already bringing in the extra dollars required to improve the sound.

Doesn't always work, but it is always worth a shot. Some KJs don't have the resources to turn down a gig and have to find ways to make them palatable.

How can you not love this woman?

You typically don't eq for a specific speaker, although it's a part, but typically you eq for a room which will - well if set correctly - will be a different setting each room.

You seemed to have missed the point.    One is, they have a better sounding system than mostly every one else in the area.    It was certainly better than his "house" system.    There was no need for them to even consider using his system.     The EQ is set for the way there speakers sound.     His would not have helped the sound.    Second, he hired a computer hack that was more than willing to use his house system because it was much better than his crap.    And he was probably less money, from lack of a steady karaoke income.    The newbies are working 5 steady nights a week.   How many nights do you want?

Right but speakers sound different in every room, which the same eq setting doesn't always work.  Most people that know how to tune a system to the room, use different eq settings in different rooms regardless if they are the same speakers.  If the owner was willing to pay my price to use his system, I would've too!  Then after a show of my followers complaining that the sound was bad to him, I would then bring in my system.

I won't give myself the aggrevation of putting myself in the position of using a crap system to prove a point to a brain dead bar owner.    Pay my price, use my system or get yourself a hack that your system will be an upgrade for.    :shock:  :O


I'm not going to argue the EQ question.      I know how my speakers and entire system sound with the current settings and changing anything to satisfy some bar owner that has a crap system, they think is great isn't worth  it.

There isn't anything to argue.  Lonman is right you DON"T EQ speakers.  You EQ a room.

I know how it sounds now with the current settings.   I'm not screwing with some crap sounding house system, so the point is moot.     My system or a hack, you pick.

The choice is yours.  I just would hate for a newbie to be reading these forums and think that you are suppose to use the same EQ settings regardless where they play.

For the benefit of those have havnt been involved in this situation.. Here are some general guidelines.  If it is a sound system that has been clobbered together the owner mgr normally doesnt want to hook into their system.  A casual inspection will evaluate the quality.  My first reaction to this during the consult is as far as the sound system we deal with his sound man and will not hook inti the system unless he is there. (Usually big clubs have an inhouse soundman that knows how to hook up bands to the system). If the owner insists then I will ask if his system will accept balanced line 600 ohm audio (Ours is generally 1k) When he gets a dumb look on his face I insist on using our system.


WE recently declined to hook into Doug Kershaws system in his Bayou House.. The consensus was we will use ours If it starts packing out then we will use the the higher wattage inhouse system.. Incidently the mgr was the lead singer with the inhouse weekend band. Lanny let her sing a song during the first sound check. She was totaly blown away..


The Cactus Canyon here in Greeley has over 20 JBL Eons on the ceiling and about 2-3kw Bass sitting on the end of the dance floor.. I want to hook into that system bad....
