Hi all:
I have been playing with a new video format for karaoke files. As an offshoot of that, someone suggested self playing karaoke files. That is, you just click on the file and it plays with benifit of having an external player. The file format is smaller and slightly clearer than mp3+g, but would anybody need such a thing? There would be no point in converting existing existing files. Opinions?

No Winamp, no WMP, just click the file and the words show up and the music plays. It looks just like a very clear MP3+g. Kinda neat, yeah. But useful?

Kinda like when you turn a presentation into a excutable file?
Good idea in theroy, but since there are already majior support for Mp3+G, WMA, ect... I doubt if it would fly very far. I just don't see a need for it at all.

From little of understanding of what I know, this is not possible. I will tell you why.
MP3+G files are two files, audio file plus graphic sub code that tells you when the words are suppose to appear in sync with the music. It's about as small as possible to do this. The only way you can include the player code along with this is to increase the file size to accomodate the application stack along with the data files, which is basically MP3+G. Application tend to be much larger size because it has to deal with the OS directly, like accessing memory management, audio and video drivers, etc.
Only way you can reduce the file size is using something like MIDI files along with MIDI player, however the audio quality of this will be terrible. It's like playing CD next to older monophonic ringtones on phone. No comparison.
If this is your idea, MIDI based, I would have to say no from professional point of view, maybe work with consumer using at home but not for professional use.

Okay, I didn't make myself clear. This is a NEW video format. Very small. You can use midi, mp3, wav, flac, whatever the heck you want as an audio file. So, the question is, can you think of any use for a self-executing karaoke file?

OK, if you can com up with a NEW video format, that is smaller than a MP3+G, WMA, or MPG,AVI, and have as good as or better quality, and able to play without a player, YEAH!!!!!!!
But I don't see how it can be possible to encode a player, music, and karaoke words into one file, with out the file being a lot bigger, or loosing a lot of quality. But if you can, it would make ya RICH!!!!! Not only for karaoke use, but any audio/video use.

Maybe a plugin for winamp incooperate with your SON may be the better way. But the format have to be avalble to those who make the disc. Or can the current cdg when rip to mp3 become the new mp3+w(w being the new video/graphic). That will be cool.

I agree with Twan. If you do have that, it may be useful. However, I still have some doubt. The Karaoke sub code takes up very little room. I just don't see how you can provide an application layer which is smaller than the sub code, since you said you can use mp3 file, which is already compressed. Can you provide a bit more technical details? If you want to keep it a secret, I would understand but I am curious.

I'm a little lost when you talk about sub-code. Sub-code is everything that isn't audio data or file allocation on a CD. This is not on a CD. It has nothing to do with CDG. It has nothing to do with MP3+g. No ripping from the timing byte. Yes, it works. I'm just trying to figure out how to make a buck from it.
