I am looking into whether there are any nationwide or local CDG rentals. Ive been having discussions with friends and that question was raised. There's mail/electronic rentals for DVD's, why not for CDG's?  It was also mentioned that the local library would be a good place to check, I will be doing that shortly. They rent out DVD's/VHS movies, so why not CDG's?

What good would it be to rent them?    You would have to do it every week.   What would you put in the songbooks?     Too much money and I'm very sure you won't get half of the songs to play from all of the scratches.    More trouble than it would be worth.    Bad idea IMO.      Save your money.

You can not even trust some other KJs to handle your discs safely, let alone some yea hoo that wants to rent them.  :shock:

What if the ones you need for the show are already out?   Then what?   Mr. Microphone?

The huge majority of people will watch a movie once, so renting the DVD is a logical thing. CDG discs; Most people want to sing a song at lest more than once. So people buy. Well, if there is a place to rent them I will but for a diffent reason.

A store here rents machines and discs and makes a killing.  Some people will want a house or work party and the rentals a great thing for that type of application.  Not to mention birthday parties, anniversarys, etc.  

Not everybody is a karaoke junkie.

Actually, if I were to get into the rental business, I'd probably buy a couple stand alone units with music preloaded on them.  I see now that the folks at CAVS are also making machines that are ipod compaible.  This would be perfect for parties and such without having to worry about your discs geting scratched.

Only thing I found for karaoke music rental / subscription on Google was this: http://www.streamkaraoke.com/. This is a streaming site to your computer. This is an interesting concept. I wonder if it's possible to capture / record the music being downloaded? Also, I wonder if this could somehow work for a karaoke business. Without having to worry about building or maintaining a song database the KJ saves a bunch on cash outlay to startup. But I wonder about the quality and selection. Plus you have to have a broadband interenet connection wherever you set up, and have to hope that you don't get any latency in your connection while someone is performing or while the next singer is about to start up. Still I think it is feasible it would work in a KJ setup in the sense that you could probably still run 2 monitors (maybe) and you could output from computer to mixer and audio equipment, etc.

There are several karaoke/dj supply stores here in my town that rent CDGs. They rent them in "packages" where it is like $20/day for 1,000 songs, $30 for 2,000, $40 for 3000, etc.. with about 7 different packages. They usually do go along with equipment rentals, which run from all-in-one crappy systems to nice professional systems for varying amounts.

So check your local phone book for karaoke/dj supply and I'm sure you'll find rentals available.

Well I think he's referring more for home use - kind of like NetFlix.  You order the discs, they send them, you use them & them send them back on a monthly subscription basis.  It wouldn't be for professional use.  Scratches?  I've never receieved a scratched disc from Netflix, they buff their discs every return as do most video stores as well.

How can you base a show on discs that may already be rented out?      :O  :shock:

I still think he was talking about a NetFlix type rental.  
No I would not want to run a show with that method or having to rely on if the discs are in stock.  Rechecking some of the previous postings HOPEFULLY he isn't trying to be able to rent & copy the rentals into his computer system  :(  :shock:

Speaking of that..are there any organizations that come around and check KJ's inventory for pirated stuff at the clubs? Kind of like ATF?

I would use a netflix type service for cdg's.  The reason being, if I want to try a new song, I can try it without buying it.  If I then want to buy it, it would be great to have an option to buy or return.  I don't like it when I buy a CDG for one song and get stuck with it because I can't do the song well....

ASCAP & BMI do go around every once in a while, but they are looking for clubs that aren't paying the licensing more often.  I have heard the RIAA is going to start going after karaoke users both companies & private users that download through unlicensed internet sources - such as they did with Napster, they are also supposedly going to start targeting video karaoke performances from users on sites such as YouTube & MySpace.

Netflix itself would not be a good source for getting the newest karaoke disc, they mostly use PartyTyme disc and other low priced disc normally found at Walmart, Kmart and such. Believe me, I'm a Netflix subscriber and I've looked. Their selection is laughable.

If you just want a song every now and then to practice, SoundChoice has lots of songs you can download for $2 each.    Can not rent anything for $2.

Thanks for the inputs. Soundchoice for $2 sounds good to me. Rentals are available around here, but my guess is quality is substandard. Soundchoice makes quality songs and $2 is not much for needed customer repeat requests.

I plan on putting a request sheet out for song requests that I don't have. (beginning library = +/- 2000 songs) It will be dated each day for inputs, after 3 (differing dates) requests for the same song I will tell the customers that I will order it on a custom disk. A custom disk will be a constant upgrade to my library. The customer will greatly appreciate this, knowing that I am trying to keep them happy. I am better off $$ because of the 3 visit request rule/my library increasing constantly, and their word of mouth will also be a +. The rentals were for a possible fill in till the custom disk (10-15 songs minimum order) can be reached for purchase.

I am the bar owner that is purchasing my own PA system for self made Karaoke/DJ music to increase my clientele, I'm just looking at different ways to go about acheiving the music that is needed to keep the Karaoke customers happy. I observed how the last thread turned into a battle over the need for a "backup". So I'm walking lightly and listening closely.

Where? Best I've seen is their $4... and if they have a sale, it may drop to $3!

I just started a sheet for patrons to sing up what new songs they would like added.
At the header I wrote:
                             "NEW SONG SIGN UP SHEET"
New songs will be added to the songbooks in the near future. I would like suggestions from the patrons as to what songs you would like.
Not all songs are made in karaoke format, so not all requests can be filled.
I will fill as many requests as possible - Thank you.

People tend to think every song ever made is available on CDG. I wanted to add a  little explanation to avoid the confusion.

I have noticed that custom discs seem to wear out about 4X faster than manufactured discs, so beware of ordering "crowd favorites" that you are going to be playing over and over again on custom discs, as you may find they are worn out after about 5-6 months!!
