DUH, maybe it is time to go to Silvian and get your reading skill tested.  I never said not to have a backup, only that a backup computer is not necessary, since you alread have the backup in your CDGs and CDG player

You don't have to carry all your discs into each gig, just leave it in the trailer/van.

They will get a very minimal ammount of wear and tear since they are only backups.  My first laptop for karaoke has been running for 2 years on average 3 nites a week, and I have NEVER, NEVER had the need for a backup.

Again, it is NOT necessary to have a backup computer.

Just curious Bigdog.  How long have you've been doing karaoke with computer?

My cordless microphone receiver is not even two years old.   It worked perfectly fine on Wednesday night, not any indication of any problems.   Thursday night at the beginning of the night it would not even light up.   And it has to go back to the factory, because the music store repair guy can't fix what needs to be fixed.  It will be next week before I even get it to the music store, then it will take at least a month before I can get it back.     If that was my only computer how much money would I be losing?     That's the way electronics are, especially computers.

SORRY, USING NO backup computer is very stupid.

That's just what my discs and machines need.    Banging around in the van 5 nights a week, so I can ruin them, because I'm too cheap to use a backup computer. LMAO  LMAO

I don't work that way ever.   If I can't go first class, I'm not going at all.    Me, my business and my reputation are worth it.  :worship:  :O

To answer your question, I am not using one (two) yet.    I have one laptop sitting beside me on the desk.     I have been playing and testing it, with the videos and Sax and Dottys.    This is how I know I need to have at least 2 gig processor to run my show without any music and video glitches.     This laptop has a 2.4 gig processor.   The video files are very big.     They look just like the laser discs.

When I get all of the laser discs transferred to the hard drive, then.   I am also still trying to decide if I want to go rack mount or laptop.     I will be using the best external sound and video cards I can buy.      I will have two computers.   4 hard drives.      I will have backup video and sound cards.     I do not and will not go out unprepared.     Looking like an unprepared jerk is not an option, I choose for myself.     I will practice switching from one to the other, so I can minimize my down time whenever it crashes and it will, I have no doubt about it.

Comparing computers to most other electronics is another case of apples and oranges.

How many backup refrigerators do you have BD? LMAO

Buy a backup computer if it makes you feel good. No problem. Spend a few years with the newer technology in laptops and you may be glad you have the backup even though you never use it. I recommend getting a faster processor than 2 gigs and don't get a celeron whatever you do. They're good processors but  the level 2 cache might be a good thing to have when running a show.

I'm not trying to put you down BD. Just trying to make a point.

BTW - I don't recommend arguing with the people who have experience in the subject you're arguing.

Yet you use 1 amp with all your speakers & no crossovers...first class, um no!

But you are already carrying them around right now 5 nites a week, with em banging around in your van, you must not care much about your CDGs and player.  For myself, when I carried my discs with me, I took very good care of them.  Brought them in the house with me each nite, never let them get too cold or hot.   I have a lot invested in my CDGs and never let them bang around in the trailer.  But using your theroy, letting your backup computer bang around in the van has more potential of causing harm to that device than letting your disc bang around in your van.

Dosen't matter how good of stuff you have if you let it bang around in your van.

So do you have an extra battery for the van?
Got 2 spare tires?
4 sets of jumper cables?

Once again it is NOT necessary to have a backup computer as long as you actually have all the discs to match the songs that you have on your computer.  Your discs and CDG player are your backup.

You know I think it's more important that small businesses register with the city and count building get a tax license and pay taxes on the money they make. Particicipate in the local JC and establish a good record with the BBB..  This deals with your local economy and establishes a rep... To me this is more important than carrying 40 million cd's with or worrying about copyright laws or supporting some corp that would screw me in a heart beat.

I have 3 refrigerators.   One in the kitchen.   One in the cellar and one unplugged in the garage.   Beside the full size freezer.

I always play with two machines.   I will always play with a backup computer handy.

If I go rack mount, there will be 2 mounted in the working box.   If I go laptop one will be mounted and one will be in a brief case with me, with the extra hard drives because I will need 2 hard drives for the songs.     One 400 gig for the laser songs and one smaller one for the CDGs.     I will have 1 backup external sound and video cards too.

Small change your business.    Mine is first class.  :worship:

I will be prepared for the power surges and crashes.

Show of hands.

Anyone ever have a problem with any computer ever?      Nobody ever called a manufacturer or help desk ever?    Nobody ever heard of anyones computer crashing?      Nobody ever had to run a system recovery?

Your world is perfect and mine is so unperfect?

I think someone lies a lot.     :O

My new desktop crashed a few months ago.  It had to have the recovery discs run on it.     It took several hours to get it back.   How long is the average karaoke show?     Hummmmmm.

All paying customers.    May I have you attention please.    While I spend the rest of the night running the recovery discs.... please feel free to use my "BACKUP"....... MR. Microphone. LMAO     Good thing for you, I always come fully prepared for any emergency.     Hey good looking, we'll be back to sing with you, later.   Much... later.

If I still have my job, after the bar owner loses his whole nightly income.   He may be looking for a more responsible, reliable, fully prepared KJ.   Wait a minute, that's suppose to be me.

One computer = show death.      Reputation hit, unnecessarily.

Even if your computer crashes and you have a backup computer, you still look like a jerk.   At least you can salvage the night in a half hour, tops.

Yea my discs and machines constantly jump all over the van.   It looks like a NASA weightless training flight. (Vomit Comet)     Stuff flying all over the place.     I miss handle all of my equipment.     Just so I can buy a new system every year.

I can't wait to start smashing up the computers.

It's good to be king. :worship:

Sounds like BD needs a lesson in packing.  We go six nights a week, mobile, and never have a problem of equipment flying all over the place.

For the record, this is some pretty dumb advice... sure, leave your entire investment in the van to get ripped off!

I'll leave my stuff at home, thank you very much!

Two or three years ago we were setting up again at the lake to do the boat club gig It takes in a minimum of $500 and $100 tips to go latr into the night. When it cme time toshift from DJ to. karaoke the dual display was broke.. It cost me $250+....I now have a laptop for backup and can hookup in 30 seconds with no degradition in quality. If Im 100 miles from home to do a Wedding I feel alot better knowing Im covered wherever possible.

I have been running digital karaoke for 4 or 5 years A computer is more dependable than a cd player.in the fact that the optics get dirty over a period of time and the quality suffers but is not noticed.   Twice now I have replaced a JVC and RSQ with a laptop and the crowd commented on the difference in qality of sound..

Wait a minute! Power surges?? If they're that common in your area you should be running a UPS with conditioner for all your gear! :banghead:   A power surge can ruin any electronic gear.
