Charmin  - This is the Fx Unit Im using.

See below:
http://www.bosscorp.co.jp/products/en/VF-1/

You had ask what effects I used on that song & is why I posted this.... So you could see what it looks like incase you come across one at a good price. Back when I bought mine it was around $500 New. The newest unit that replaced the VF-1 is the Boss GT Pro rack mount unit, but its much more costly.

Anyway you can always look on ebay if your interested, who knows... you might just find one at a good price  :D

haha, I read your reply, and kinda said "oh, okay, forget it.... I'll NEVER sound like that now"...... I figured it was all CEP settings.  :crying2:

Okay, I'm gonna go look at that link. If I plant one of those trees in my yard that grow money on them, maybe in a few years I'll have enough of a cash crop to go buy some more stuff:)

Thanks Jesse.

That LITTLE BOX is what's making your vocals sound so good?

Now, my Behringer mixer has a built in FX thingee.... shouldn't I be able to use that for the same thing? I'm still figuring it out, I just played with knobs a bit and got a setting I thought was decent, and left it there. I never record from it though, just sing in my music room.

My mixer

Jesse, do you record your subs live? Gawd, I wish I could do that. I really think I'd do away with this time consuming multi tracking if I could. And I wouldn't have to wait for the house to be so "quiet" for me to record either.

Charmin,

Yes, you could use the effects on your Behringer mixer and run the output from the mixer into whatever you are using to record.  You can also control your EQ that way.  I've not used a Behringer but I do know that even the output from the line-out jacks on some powered mixers have a certain amount of hiss to them which would add some unwanted noise to your recording.

If you are recording on your PC there is a great solution that's relatively inexpensive.  Several months ago I bought a Line 6 Tone Port.  It connects to your PC via USB.  It has both a mic and an instrument input.  The coolest thing about this setup is that it comes with software that allows to you pick and choose from a pretty good variety of vocal recording setups, guitar and bass amp/cabinet combinations and every effect you can think of.  The software works in conjunction with your multi-track software.

Recording used to be a real production for me.  I had to hook up a mic preamp, effects box and compressor for the vocals.  If I was playing guitar I needed to mic my amp and have my effects box connected.  Even if I was just playing bass I needed to mic the bass amp.

Now I just turn it on, select the settings I want to record with and begin recording.  It even has a guitar/bass tuner . . . one more piece of gear I don't have to worry about.

True this setup "emulates" the real thing.  I will never get the true tube tone I would get out of my Fender  amp but the emulation is  pretty darn close.  And the vocal set-ups are even better.

The cost is $130.

I'll leave you with one note of caution.  The whole thing comes with a "lite" version multi-track recording software.  It's actually pretty good software.  But I don't use it because I think the interface is a little clunky and my input and output choices are limited.  So I wanted to use the software I've been using.  Good idea but less than ideal in practice.  I had to change a bunch of settings before I could get anything to work.  My Cool Edit Pro software doesn't support ASIO drivers which is what you need to get the maximum benefit from the Tone Port.  So I am limited to recording  single track at a time.  That's doesn't bother me all that much because I had started recording my vocal and instrument tracks separately anyway.

Although I had problems getting set up I did find the Line 6 support staff to be very knowledgable and helpful.

I'm getting higher quality sound with far fewer hassles.  And I have the freedom to choose from a variety of pre-programmed set-ups or I can make my own.  I have almost unlimited flexibility to make things sound the way I want them to sound.

Now if they only sold a plug-in that would improve the quality of my singing, I'd really be in business!

Larry

LOL ... You ever seen a pic of Jesse?    He's pretty darn handsome:)

Larry....

I know alot of people run their mixers out to their soundcard, but I'm scared as hell to hook anything else into my computer. I do have a tiny mixer hooked into my soundcard now, that's what I record with. But it's a small, non powered thing... I just use it so I can sing with my Shure SM58... and I like that it has an EQ and a gain.

I multi track, and I think I do even THAT a bit different from other people. I've heard people talk about setting the FX in multi track view, so the fx are added as they sing.... I don't do that. I take the vocal track into edit view and do all that to it when I'm done singing. Problem is, I haven't played with the fx much... guess I should. I just found something that works okay, a light reverb and a touch of echo, and I leave it there. That's all I do, besides adjust the volume of the vocal track. I guess if I got to know CEP better, I could be more satisfied with the sound I'm getting.

Or, like you said, if I find that golden setting that gives me a whole new voice, then I'll be set.   I dunno if you listened to Jesse's sub, but I loved the vocal settings (besides the fact that he's got an awesome voice...) it sounded.... so clear, and so pro.

Usually when I'm really impressed with a recording, I find out it was recorded live... and that just ticks me off, cause I can't do it.  :(

I'm gonna check out the thing you mentioned.... I'd love to have something that would also record my instruments better. I get god awful results with my fiddle & guitar and stuff. (no... it's NOT just my playing, only partly.. I just can't get it to sound the same on the PC)

Thanks for the info. Some things to think about. (dream about.... whatever)

Wish me luck, got a job interview this afternoon. And if I get a job, I can afford those toys... but wont have time to record any more. What a sad world I live in.  :D
