Hey Junebug..
I am an Audacity veteran so to speak..
....this is what I would do...
1. Go to the Audacity homepage...
http://audacity.sourceforge.net/about/features
Download the VST enabler, and insert into your Audacity folder.
2. Go to the Kjaerhus Audio homepage, and download the "classic compressor" and
the "Classic master limiter"...Honestly the stock Audacity features are kind of
crappy, aside from the stock "echo" which is pretty decent, and the "G-verb"
which isn't so bad....insert these plug-in's into your audacity effects folder.
3. Let me know when you have that accomplished, and I can give you some
ball-park settings to use, all of the above mentioned plug-in's will cost you
$0.00......if you have any trouble just let me know....
4. Here is the Kjaerhus Audio link.......
