Sing the song. If you can do it without crossing your eyes and sounding like Alfalfa on the little Rascals, it could be your key. If your voice cracks and your throat hurts, it's not your key. You should be able to hit every note without going sharp or flat. Always sing standing up. So you don't crush you diaphragm. It will help you have more wind. If you have to squeeze yourself, to hit a high note, it's not your key. Play with them, take the key up and down until the song fits.
I have a song that has to go down 4 steps. I have another one the goes up 3 steps. There are songs that I can not do unless they are down one. There are some songs that I just can not do, because they are to high for me. I wish I could but I can't. Every singer is different. Always sing in your key. You will look and sound more professional. It's not macho to sing it the way it was written. Especially if you sound stupid, because it's out of your range.

i love singing joe cocker but find i have to lower almost al his keys 5 times. the only problem is the speed or tempo of the song. unchain my heart sounds a lot more soulful when slowed and a can belt out some super sounds...but...you can leave your hat on, does't have the same effect so i don't sing it that much...most kjs don't have tempo changing capabilities!!! i simply suggest lower keys to your voice range and drop the songs that you can't handle...
