I am looking into backing up my CDGs to burned copies for a few reasons:

1) To have the duplicates take the wear and tear
2) To easily replace the duplicates when they start to wear
3) To change my numbering system to something more simple, i.e., just numbering CDGs #1-660 and so on instead of all the brand numbering for easy recall and easy updates.

Can anyone recommend a good CDG replicator and how are the quality of burned discs compared to regular discs?

I use the Plextor 716uf drive combined with my laptop or desktop to replicate my CD+Gs.  Cannot tell the difference between dupe and original.

...the Plextor PX716 series received AWFUL reviews on CNet (2.5 out of 10). Users claimed they break easily. How long have you two had yours? Any issues?

I have always heard nothing but bad things about Plextor RW drives. Maybe these users had some ulterior motive??

Plextor - bad drives?  Most Plextors is one of THE drives to have for karaoke projects.  Had a Plextor Premium drive for almost 2 years now going strong & a Plextor 2/4/8 drive for 5 years before that which the Premium replaced.

You can get some terrific deals on plextor drives, older and newer on Ebay!

There IS a stand alond duplicator out there that uses plextor drives, and has a karaoke mode as far as duplication... yes for data, no for karaoke.

I played around with it at my last job. Freaked me out when I saw the karaoke text pop up on the small control module!

But for 99.9% of your work, a standard pc is just fine!

CD Clone works great.   Just need to get a compatable burner for the program.   They have a list.

I can;t believe those ratings on the 716.  I will check it out.  I wonder how large the sample size was?  the 716 is a workhorse and is the one used by the CAVS people.

Well Chris, I looked all over the Cnet web site and could not find a review for the 716UF.  However the Plextor 760 was the top rated.

I'd like to read the 716 review if you can steer me to it.

I believe I use Power Cdg Burner. Works very quick, with high quality burns. Supports burning cdg's in dvd burners as well:

I've been using Power cd+g and a standard Lite On burner and have had excellent results. Easy to use, fast and has worked with every blank disc I've given it so far.

I agree, for making exact duplicates it's awesome(paid for itself many times over, still works like a champ)....should go for about 200 bucks new....takes about 12 to 15 minutes to do a disk....in contrast it only takes about 3 minutes to do me...

Why can't you do that now?  Get a label maker & label the discs with the number you want!

Changing the numbering system will screw up the singers whenever they request a disc from a certain company.   What are you going to tell them?   I don't know?     Take a chance.     Bring your own discs.

Or he could renumber them with a manufacturer code at the end or beginning.  
ie SC8148-14

SC-67-14
or
67-14SC

And the number he would use is just the 67-14 ignroing the manu code as it's just for the customers.

What will be the advantage of learning a totally different numbering system?

Adding a manufacturer code to each song number (as Lonman has suggested) solves the problem with custom disc numbering systems and is the solution for the computer systems using some type of ordinal numbering system.  

The advantage of a custom ordinal disc numbering system is that it makes life a lot easier for the KJ when it comes to organizing the discs.  A new disc is simply added to the last open slot versus the problem of having to shuffle discs around to insert a new disc when organized by manufacturer #s.

No re-inventing, many MANY computer users (even disc users for that matter) use this method & it works well for people that want a specific manufacturer.  As long as their is a code that would be in front of the normal manufacturer number, that same code can be used for a custom number without any problem - for those who know what they are looking for, they know to look for the code, everyone else just relies on what they pick or they will ask the kj anyway which is the best version in their opinion.
