Now I know why some mothers eat their young  LMAO

I am ready to strangle my 19 yr old ! Last night I get a call at 1am.
She says my cars broke down can you come and get me. Aaarrg !
We've already put $1500 into this car recently to get it fixed. It took
2 pro mechanics from different shops and 6 visits to get it done.

She calls again the police officer called a tow truck. I tell her no.
The cop won't talk to me on the phone. He insists it be done now because she
is on a an over pass.
His tow truck is $125 just to hook up the car then $3 a mile after that.
I was fuming when I got there. There was nothing I could do the tow truck driver already had the car. We didn't even get the chance to see if we could get it started.
He tows it to the dealer.

I find out today and $200 later - IT WAS OUT OF GAS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Don't worry she is paying the bill.

I am so mad at her right now. When she comes home I'm going to ask her not to talk to me until I've cooled off. Her having to pay $200 for her stupidity should be
enough punishment. She works hard for her money, it will sting.

Oh noooo Babs!! Sorry to hear about that. It is kinda funny though because it reminds me of some of the stuff I went through with my oldest daughter, though she wasn't driving my car, just the several that I bought for her.
Just recently, I gave her a car that I wanted to keep as a someday collector car...an '88 Lincoln Mark VII LSC....Mustang V8 engine....air suspension....all the good stuff that car guys know about and like. I bought it really cheap several years ago and didn't drive it much....it was her next target so to speak. I vowed not to let the car go, but at the time, I couldn't afford to buy her another one, so.....I let it go.  :bawling:
Then, she couldn't afford to buy gas for it with all of her runnin' all over the place, so her boyfriend bought her another car, and she gave mine to him!! I'm devastated. But I didn't need the car, I have too many as it is....it's just the thought of the whole deal that upsets me. I gave her a dependable old school type car, and she had to have one of the cheap disposables that break down alot....my offering wasn't good enough. Good thing that'll be the last time for me, she's an adult now, time to grow up.  :wink:

My daughter bought her own car. Of course the loan is in my name. She has always been good about making the payments, thank goodness.
This is the second time she ran out of gas, so the first thing I asked her on te phone was "do you have gas". she said yes - another reason I am so mad.

Babs, it might be a good idea to make sure your daughter knows how to check the oil level and how to get it changed when needed.

That is a common for people who also make that mistake about checking the gas. A seized engine is something to avoid.

Wow, sounds like she needs some serious lesson in life skills. I mean, we used to learn some stuff in school, like how to balance checkbook, how to type, how to drive, etc. Now days, due to budget cuts and stuff, many don't teach the fundamental life skills at school. Where are they suppose to learn? I guess in streets or hopefully at home.

I don't have kids but I feel your pain.

I have a 21 yr old that has allowed not ONE, not two but frickin' THREE cars to be towed to a yard, and by the time he tracks them down, the towing and storage bill is far more than the vehicle is worth.

Thought I was gonna strangle him when I heard about the 2nd occurance. He was driving a car with temp tags that were expired to a rock concert!! HELLO!!! Cops are watching for ANY reason in those areas to pull you over! That happened after I had came back here to Missouri for a friend's funeral, and I'd given him the money to get it tagged... he blew that money on other stuff. So in the five days I was gone, that bill skyrocketted.

So when I got back there, I took the car to the DMV, paid all the licensing and everything, for I knew it wasn't going to happen with him doing it... then a few months later, he moves over to Washington from Oregon, and DOESN'T tag the car there. They towed it...

Two times with the same frickin' car!! Told him he was on his own at that point!

Calm down first, it could have been worse. Give her a big long hug, and tell her how carelessness like that can lead to serious situations. Running out of of gas can also be harmful to the car, and even running on less than a quarter of a tank of gas can cause the filters(one in the tank itself....expensive to fix)...to plug up, and then the fuel pump can quit......big expense.....Tell her you love her, and worry about her.....that's all......and if she loves and worries about her hard earned dollars a fraction as much......she will become more responsible........more results with a little sugar, than vinegar at this age.......

By the time she came home today I cooled off. Good thing because
she insists that she had gas. We called the car place and they are now
checking for a leak.

Thanks Johnny - Most people will say you need to be harder on your kids. The problem is as I'm sure Knightshow has experienced you try to make them responsible for their actions as an adult and we end up paying more. For instance -
The car breaks down because of their negligence you tell them it is their problem.
Now they have no way to get to work because they have no way to pay to get their car fixed. Next they lose their job. I try only to bail her out when I have to. They have to learn somethings the hard way. This is a tough age. To young to make it on their own and have all the adult responsibilties.

WHat happene to the days when schools required you, (Males and females) to take a genar cutomotive maintance class.  Ours was hooked in with the drivers-ed class.  Taught you how to check fluids, air up/change/check tire, change oil, ect...

Don't feel too bad...At least she is 19...My husband did about that same thing 7 years ago..After working on the truck for two days he had it towed to goodyear and they told him he was out of gas.  So he bought two tires.....

Kids everywhere are the same. I have two daughters, both in collage. When they are at home they drive both of us up the wall, but when they are away we missed them.

The rule in my household is, The kids cannot drive the car without me inside.

They are absolutely brain-dead until about thirty and then they complain because you never TOLD them anything!!!

Well, not all of them.  My eldest son must be a mutant because I sometimes think he's the same age I am at only 22.  (puffing up with pride!  He LISTENS!!)

I know this isnt that bad but kinda sorta along the same lines...my daughter is 16 old enough to know right from wrong in certain instances...we were at the beach a few weeks back & she takes our digital camera we paid about 300.00 for & sits it lens down in the sand...we couldnt get the lens to shut after that & tried blowing it out by mouth & by air can & nothing...its broke..it would have costed us half or more of that ( THE 300.00 WE PAID FOR IT) depending on the problem to get it fixed, & who knows for how long !!...we use the camera alot, we take pics of shows & events we do with the company & put pics on the website so we kinda need a camera...went out the other day & spent another 300.00 on a new camera....KIDS !!...YA GOTTA LOVE 'EM !!!  

I AM giving her odd jobs around the house for "payback" which is a really good way of getting the floors mopped And I think they do "think" the next times things like these happen so bravo having her pay for it

then i laughed my butt off at her running out of gas

then i figgered i'd better give a decent reply.....


the reason the officer made her get the car towed is that it was on an overpass with no way to get it far enough off the road not to be a danger to other motorists.  it is common practice in most cities.  why he wouldn't talk to you is a mystery, however.  it would have been very easy to explain the reason.  while you may still not have liked it, you would have at least known.  down here i'm pretty sure the office would have asked your daughter if it would be okay for him to push the car off the bridge and roadway with his vehicle, however it is possible he didn't feel comfortable with your daughter behind the wheel of a disabled vehicle given her age and driving experience.
