It's good to have the original on hard copy such as a CD or DVD. Playing from a laptop is still not legal but I doubt they will have a problem with it as long as you have the hard copy.

Not to derail the direction of the thread, just needed to mention this.

Must be the area because at Big Mama's there entire system is computer driven.
The singers dont even have to fill out song slips...you walk up to the computer screen and keyboard and then type the name of the song you want to sing or the artist and a list of that artist songs shows up. you type in the song name you want to sing and type your first name...Then when its your turn to sing the kj just calls out your name.

This system keeps everything fair and singers are called in the order that they typed in there song request.  :D

Ok...I'll go away now, just trying to help

No technically it is illegal, not just an area thing, it's a federal copyright violation.  WOuld they get busted for it?  Probably not AT THIS TIME.  That may or may not change in the future.

What does everyone here think of PeaVey?

The SP series is very good not too big on their lesser lines, whatever speaker you get however, make sure your amp power is rated correctly.  If a speaker is rated 250 continuous/500 watts RMS/1000 watts peak @ 8 ohms, your amp should push about 500 watts into 8 ohms.

Is there anywhere that sells just downloads...like buying songs for 69 cents from Walmart.com, is there a place to download individual songs for Karaoke? Want to ask/poll patrons of their most desired songs and get them right away.

MOST download sites for karaoke are not legal.  I believe CAVS has some, but from what I understand you have to do some converting with the file to make it work on anything other than CAVS units.

For downloads the best thing to do is to go to indivual manufacturer's sites.  Some do sell downloads, others don't.  They would be the best ones to ask.

As for not losing power on crossovers, the simple solution is powered tops and bottoms as each will have their own power source.  Also if one breaks down during a show you still have the others to rely on.  Sort of like jet airplanes where they can lose an angine or two (depending on the aircraft) and still fly and land.

Something to keep in mind:

You stated that you are going to mount the main speakers on the wall. If this would mean that the main speakers BEHIND the singer on the stage, you are just asking for some serious feedback problems.

The speakers need to be mounted somewhere IN FRONT of the singer to avoid feedback!! Maybe on the walls to the sides of the stage and a foot or two ahead of the stage.

All right , more Karaoke starter discussion. Thanks people, I'm reading and heedin'.

Chuck2 - original music on CD or DVD, to keep that shaky legality of the laptop secure. Thanks. I will print this thread out and read it over numerous times to make sure I understand everyone's points.

Jesse - Big Mama's Karaoke Cafe, have them on my list, will browse as time allows.
Thanks for the positive remark on th Peavey speakers, will have to stop by local shop for a listen. Wood instead of plastice cabinets...15's...check.

Lonman - SP series, I'm assuming your talking about the Peavey line. I'll make sure the amp power is rated correctly.

Timberlea - Download's from individual websites. I have dial up, so this is probably a mute point. Does anyone sell specialized CDG's/VCD's/DVD's ?  Specially made with all the desired songs on one disc.

TopherM - Thanks for the feedback input, I will make sure mounts are 1-2' in front of singer. I've heard the feedback interference before and its not pretty.

Thanks everyone for your inputs.  Now I'll add a few more thoughts...

What do you think of using the Bose speakers for the opposing side speakers. I'm assuming they will match up. There will be a seperate volume control for that side.
There will be 3 main speakers, 2 cube speakers and a bass box available. This should make that side rock also! Does anyone here use Bose with their sound
system? They've got excellent sound for smaller speakers.

Still no answer for the Laptop user of Karaoke...is there special software? Would rather use the laptop because of convenience, I understand the need to keep the music on CD as backup/original etc.

Well that's it for now, thanks again everybody for the info., it's helping me understand more about my needs.

Many of the major manufacturers do indeed produce custom discs which you can get through their sites or anywhere between $3-5 per song and most have a minimum of 10 songs per disc to a maximum of 15.  But go to the sites to see what their policies are and what is available for customs.

You're welcome bigjim.

There are a few software packages available for running karaoke and some also make the books too. I can't recommend any because I just use Winamp and my wife created a database for the songbooks. This one is particularly tough to answer because of what you might want the software to do.

Some of the things to keep in mind for finding the hosting software are what kind of functionality you need from the software. I too would like to know what is recommended for laptop hosting. There are people in the Tech forums that don't come to the regular discussion forums who have some answers. There are also plenty of them who do come that also know plenty of things to consider. If you don't get the answers you need soon enough you can post the specific questions in the tech forum of this site and get even more answers.

Sorry for my vague post above. I was still on my first cup of coffee.

JMO   Concentrate on the sound system, don't worry about the lights yet.    If it sounds good the crowd will come, even in the dark.    People decide to come in from seeing all the cars lined up outside.     90% of the bars I've seen barely have windows.    Most local ordinances don't allow flashing lights that face the street.   Traffic stuff.

Timberlea - Thanks for the custom disk info. What sites do you reccomend?

Chuck2 - I've been surfing the tech side and I'm especially interested in the rack pc operation. With this being a stationary system, it could be a good choice for me. Is winamp a free download?

Bigdog - Good point about the lights - will get sound system first. When I get lights, they'll be projected away from road, people will have to look that way to see it.

Thanks for the inputs, it is much appreciated.

The ones that come to mind are Sound Choice, Chartbusters, and Sing To The World.  I'm sure other members will add to this.

Winamp is a free download and so are a few of the plug-ins that you need to tweek it for use. One or two of the plug-ins need a small amount of money to operate but I hear those are not a big cost. I would try to explain what they are and how they work but there are other here who would do a better job of that than I could.

Karyoker (Ollie) has the links and a lot of good info for these on his website.
