What kind of special are we talkin' here Keith.

I sent mine because I like to receive goodies in the mail and I just love free stuff. It's a Scottish thing.

I think I have an idear..... there's something he wrote me about a couple weeks ago that he was going to send me. But if it's that..... dayum, Keith, the way you explained it..... that's quite a thing to be sending all over the country to a bunch of people. And here I thought it was just for me.  :(  Traitor.

(and no you all...... it's NOT a new Jeep Wrangler, dang it all)

A Brit and a Scot were standing on a corner talking when an Irishman walked up. "You know what," said the Irishman, "I just went into that pub over there, ordered a pint, played some darts and when I walked out of the pub the barman said to me to pay up. So I told him I paid when I got my pint, the barman did nothing to me, so I got a free drink!"

The Brit like the ideal so much he went into the pub and did the same thing the Irishman did. The Brit came out and told the Irishman and the Scot that the barman gave him no trouble either.

So the Scot decides to try this. He walks into the bar and orders a pint. As he continues to talk to the barman, the barman mentioned the two blokes who walked out without paying. The Scot asked the barman why he did nothing. The barman said, "We'll I'm not looking for trouble," the Scot replied, "Well it's getting late, if you give me my change, I'll be heading home."

Trust me...Okra in Gumbo sux.............Okra is nasty......It's like boiled snot....you don't have to swallow it, it slides down.....Yuck!

But fried Okra is fantastic! :worship:  Okra rolled in cornmeal batter then dipped in egg and tossed in hot fat, it's heaven!...But raw Okra boiled in Gumbo is like eating thick slimey snot! :(

Jeez, pputting okra not it LA cooking????  Arest you insane?

Ya need to prep it proprewly, and cooke it properly, and it will not be snotty.
I live up north, in the land of pork and corn, and I even know that.

Now if I could only get a good source for some Andouille....

KEITH!!!!!!!! I Louisiana boy who doesn't like OKRA!!!!! That's down right traitorous!!!! I just might have to show you what Gumbo's SUPPOSE To taste like!!! LMAO

Seriously MorganLaFey, some folks like okra, some don't.  Personally, Gumbo's just not Gumbo without it to me. But I don't like it fried....

And like previously stated, if gumbo is done right, you really don't taste the okra, and it does help thicken it, but not so much over all.  It comes down to a texture I believe, and I happen to like it..
And you HAVEN'T lived until you've had Gumbo  :)

GAHMC ... I've had gumbo ... thought I was going to die!  (Of course I have a severe intolerance for tomatoes ... can't have any or I pay for days!)  Love okra though ... not bad for a boy born so far north that even Yankees are southerners eh?

When I was stationed in California, my best friend at the time was from Monroe LA. He and I used to make Gumbo for the whole class twice a month. He didn't always use okra.

dsharrow, Funny things is: I've never considered Alaska as "Yankee Country". (though I'm surprised you can get okra) Sorry to hear about the tomato thing: keeps you from enjoying most Cajun cooking... guess you'll have to stick with crawfish  LOL

yeah, Chuck, that is one point I left out: Gumbo can actually be made several ways, with different combinations of meat and other stuff, but I REALLY LOVE my gumbo with okra in it. The rue (gravy starter) is what really makes gumbo, gumbo.

Actually, dsharrow, now that I think about it, I don't use tomato products in my gumbo....
