I should probably not mention this yet but I am downloading Windows Vista. I had to go with the 32bit Version because my hardware is not fully compatible with the 64bit version.

I will let you guys know if I can get it going. My only concern is that my DVD media may not be good enough to record this onto. A lot of the files I've tried to write to this cheap media can not be read by even this same burner.

Heard somewhere that the temp license for this is good for quite a few months so I thought I could handle a few headaches and try it out. If it's more trouble than it's worth I won't pan it but I will take it off the computer.

This download is 2.5GB. It is confusing my computer because the download status window says it has downloaded 226%.

LMAO

Well, see ya in a couple weeks, after you get XP installed back on your PC after Vista screws it up.   LOL

I'm sticking to Win98 for as long as possible.

I've got asome time to kill. I may go back to Windows 2000 or even 98 when I'm done with Vista.

I wish they could offer a scaled down version at a lower price. I don't need a lot of the bells and whistles that came with the last 2 OSs.

I am still on win 2k. My pc can take xp. I wish I know enough to use the penguin.

And what is Vista?  a kind of credit card issued by bill gate?

Yep, stay away from it....If you have XP running smoothly, then stick with it for as long as possible.

I hate Bill Gates and Microsoft, but I have to admit that XP is much better than 3.1, 95, ME and 98SE.....I have never had a crash (BSOD) on any of my 3 XP machines.(crossing my fingers).

Vista is a Release Candidate at the moment. Microsoft is allowing folks to download it for a small fee to try it.....Once the final version is released, the Vista RC-1 Ver will be disabled unless you pay the full retail license fee or buy an OEM copy.

I'm afraid the guys using RC-1 will have to uninstall fully before they can install purchased copy rather than simply upgrade RC-1....That's no big deal as long as you install RC-1 on a dual boot system, tho.

Actually Keith, it's free to download Vista. A free OS til june of '07. I'm used to re-imaging my drive.

Morgan, Flash really is a problem on some sites. A lot of us never enable the use of Flash because it gives too much control of our machines to an unknown person.

Dayum Chuck, I agree with ya on this!! Image

I've found a lot of inconsistancies with win2k to WinXP (pro or home)... I much prefer the scaled down version of 2000 pro! My fiance's mom is on XP and loves it, because it's so "easy"... and that's the catch, I think.

I haven't tried the Vista yet, but I don't have a stand alone PC I CAN try it with... at this time. I might download it and see in a few months!

Thanks Matt.

I like the reliability of XP and 2000. I have only had blue screens for hardware reasons. I can't remember ever having one caused by the OS or software of any sort.

A scaled down version of these would be a great way to go I think. Bundled software though, is the MS way.

Okay, my DVD burner works fine but the DVD media is too cheap to record to.

I had to mount a drive image of the 2.5GB ISO that I downloaded from MS. Neither of the image extractions programs I have can extract this disk image at all. Mounting was successful. I am copying these files to a smaller hard drive to see if I can boot to it and use it like a CD or DVD to install the files. I will be down for at 45 minutes I expect.

Too much time on my hands?

Yes, and it sucks but I like the song.

Well, last June Microsoft said they were going to charge $1.50 to download Vista RC-1...

I just googled it up and see where they changed their mind and only charge if you get it on DVD....I stand corrected.

I'm gonna see if it's too late for me to order the DVD. I'm too lazy to do the research to find what media will burn properly in my DVD burner. It's an NEC 1000a with the bios flashed to burn faster, flashed to 1100a. Even at the slower speed it still doesn't burn properly. I may have wrecked the burner for all I know.

That's me, always modifiing things until they're worthless. Welcome to tooltime. LMAO

ahem...hear ye, hear ye

vista is free to download and the dvd is free.  vista has a lot of enhanced security features and such.  we downloaded at work and put it on a few machines we had laying around.  it's pretty cool.  takes a bit to get used to, but so did 98, 98se, 2k and xp.

personally (and professionally), i don't really recommed vista for home use.  in all i have read  and researched, xp is more user friendly.  keep in mind that vista comes in 32 and 64 bit os's.  however......64 bit peripherals (sound cards, printers, etc) are not yet the norm, expensive and the drivers are kinda hard to come by.

being a pc guru at work, we are pretty much up on a lot of things (not everything).  vista is slick looking, but like xp, they changed the paths to folders, changed the names of some things.

if you want to get vista just because, go ahead.  if you like what you are using, stay with it.

that's my two cents.  now i'm going to eat some ice cream!!

The Vista DVD actually wound up costing me about $6. Had to pay for the media itself and shipping. Fair enough.

The only reason I have any interest in this at all is because if I get work as a tech again I'll need to know about Vista. It could happen. LMAO

The DVD kit already arrived. They call it a kit because it comes with two installation DVDs, one for 32 bit operating systems, the other for 64 bit.

My hardware is too old to even bother with the 64 bit OS.

I already have it installed and am setting it up. The install doesn't require the amount of baby-sitting that older OSs required. You can actually start the install and walk away, finally.

Have to get used to wading around this OS. Right now every turn is like being hit in the head with a piece of wood. Same as getting used to any OS.

Chuck, did any of your harware/software not meet the requirements for the 32-bit Vista?  Also, let us know if there's anything particularly new and cool about Vista that you notice.
