I'm mostly hoping for suggestions about mixing the sound. I will be mixing it together in Cool Edit. Right now I'm trying to decide if I want all the voice-over on the left channel and all of the sound effects such as music or waves crashing or thunderstorms on the right channel. Panning them this way will allow me to adjust the VO up or down compared to the sound effects when I'm playing it back later.
I've taken classes in self hypnosis and in voice-over. I'm doing this myself because I don't want to buy a subliminal suggestion CD. I also want to emphasize the things I dislike about smoking so I will think of them as I am considering lighting-up or buying a new pack.
I'm all ears, any help will be appreciated.

I'm confused....
You're gonna make a CD..... to brainwash yourself to quit smoking?
Good idear. Play it at night while your sleeping.
No suggestions on the mix, sorry.
But I can tell you this about panning, if you're gonna play it on headphones:
After being married for 20 years, and trying to watch/hear CMT while the hubby is sitting beside me grumping about something, I have picked up the ability to totally close off one ear (yeah, the side he's sitting on) to block him out. It now comes easily.
So, you may want to rethink the panning. Your body may learn to do this as well, and tune out the voice over parts, while keeping the music going. >just a suggestion<

I was thinking of that. If you can burn it to CD I can post the finished copy on my website so you can download it. I think I can afford that much bandwidth, not sure though.

Thanks Charmin, that helps.
Maybe if I could think of more things I hate about smoking too. I have ten minutes of monologue in the can right now. Half is about hating cigarettes but not other people who smoke, the other half is about not losing what little confidence I have and not associating smoking with events such as drinking or talking on the phone or avoiding meals, etc.

Chuck....think of the biggest thing of all.... your voice.
Think of waking up some day, and having a scratchy throat. Going out to sing that weekend and not being able to get through your songs without being winded, and not being able to reach the high notes, or clearly land the low notes either.
Then, 3 months down the road, you realize it's gotten worse, and you can only do the simplest of songs.
Then, 6 months down the road you hear a recording you did a year ago and you think "Dang, what's happened to my voice, was that really me.....?!?!?"
THAT was enough to keep me from EVER taking up smoking. I can't imagine not being able to sing like I want to. Life would not be the same.

How about the oxygen tank you will have to haul around or the inability to sing becaue you had to have a trache put in your throat. The cancer, the wrinkles, the smell. Lots of reasons...How about leaving Gigi all by herself. Or Gigi having to deal with your death and your friends too..The long and agonizing death, the chemo treatments. I guess maybe I have seen this too many times.
But then I am one to talk...I need to quit too. I'd be very interested in getting a copy of that. I am pretty suseptable to hypnosis.

Hey Chuck! Good for you on quitting smoking!! I quit 2 1/2 years ago by going to a hypnosis seminar and it was the best money I ever spent. One thing they told us was that the best suggestion was the one you give yourself. I told myself "I don't NEED to smoke" and I haven't ever since. My friends still do, and I hang out in bars, but unless the smoke is coming right at me, no worries. The person I went to did include a CD with the seminar to listen to later. Although, I don't really remember most of it....That's the fun part of hypnosis...even when you think you're tuning out, your subconscious is actually tuning in. Good luck, hon! If you're ready to quit, it'll work however you do it.

How about positive suggestion. I won't smell like smoke any more and
I'll have less wrinkles, are big ones for me. How about the fact we can sit any where in a restaurant, not just the smoking section. Here is a good one - We won't feel like out casts in a room of nonsmokers and have to go outside or in someones garage to smoke.

Good ideas guys, very good.
I am including both positive and negative thoughts since the brain likes a little of both.
I rewrote the scripts today but I have a rough draft recorded from the other day and it's not too bad.
The scripts are - first the countdown script, then the confidence building script with an angle on why I will like not smoking, finally a script on things I already hate about smoking. These will be in the next set I do.
I am thinking about doing a wide pan of the Ocean sounds or whatever I am using to produce the mood or tempo. I don't want to get into long tedious details but it sounds pretty good in my head.

Record the suggestion on one channel & your mood effects or music (new age) or something relaxing like ocean waves in another. Play them back with a mixer in mono with a pair of headphones so both channels get the same signal. Then turn down the suggestion channel just until you can bearely hear it then go to sleep!

Thanks Lon.
That is pretty much what I was just thinking too. Now I just have to isolate the feedback I'm getting in my recording software when I try to record it. It can only be heard on playback and not when I'm recording.

Part of the script is to reinforce the need to quit so I will want to quit more than I already do. As it stands now, I don't want it badly enough. THat is where I need the most reinforcement.

I got the ground loop interference taken care of and will be able to make the suggestive CDs very soon. I'm hoping to have the webspace available to let people from this website download it if they wish for free. I hope to get feedback on them. The script will be on a text file available for download as well.
The file that will be available will have ocean waves, some seagulls, and lite mood music. It's only one of a few so it's not a problem making it available for free for just a few days.

Hey Chuck. Sounds like a good idea. I don't really have any suggestions, or I'd be a non-smoker already. But I did want to mention that I just visited my Father-in-law last night who had recently been told that he has lung cancer in one lung. He's 66 years old, been smoking Lucky Strikes since he was born, was a heavy drinker (until recently), was a Marine Corp. bad a$$ back in the day (carried the bad attitude to this day), and now, because of all the bad habits he coveted over the years, he can barely walk from a back injury several years ago, lost alot of weight,(looks like he's walking dead), coughs up blood constantly, has a pale, bluish look in the face with bloodshot eyes, and now has to face the fact that he could be checking out soon from the lung cancer, but is STILL smoking heavily!!
For me, if that's not enough misery to make a person quit smoking, I wonder what could? I've tried cold turkey myself before and made it a good 8 hours or so before lighting up again. I've tried the wake up in the morning and don't light up thing before...it worked for several hours also. I'm seriously considering hypnosis now. I've heard testimonies from alot of quitters in the past that it really did work. If your cd is anything like hypnosis, I wouldn't mind getting a copy of it also.
