Maybe I'm a little more competent than I had estimated.

This topic was posted as a response to a friend of all of us who was very insecure about his own abilities to perform. This person does not come around here much any more. It was not posted as a slam to anyone so please don't take it as such.

Boy, does that study ever confirm my everyday experience.  Reminds me of those poor fools on AI who suck but think they're wonderful.

Makes me wonder about my evaluations of my karaoke performances, too.  Sometimes I think I did great, other times I think I sucked.  Maybe it's the other way around.

It says in the article that Justin Kruger, the grad student who helped with the study, is now a professor at the University of Illinois, right here in my town.  Maybe I should look him up for more information on this competence business.

I don't expect this thread to last much longer since it has a link in it. I hope it goes for a few more hours though.

Yeah, this applies to karaoke (singing, in general) IMO. It seems the ones who get up there and flaunt.... are NOT the best singers. The ones who get up more modestly, and are truly a bit nervous about their performance... have the least to worry about. From people I'M used to watching sing anyhow.



Yeah, that could almost freak you out. Maybe I should sing only the songs I think I truly suck at the worst?  :no: ....  I've worried myself into stage fright too many times over just this kinda thing. (do I only THINK I do this one okay??.... am i over/underestimating this song??.... should I do a different one??) I finally had to take on the "it isn't gonna kill me, one way or the other" attitude, and just sing them.

Studies like this one though can freak your mind a bit. But, never once have I gotten up to sing THINKING that highly of myself anyhow, so maybe I'm freaking out now for no reason?

Sometimes, I'm too paranoid to even want the feedback. I sit down with the "shut up, I don't even wanna know how I did on that one" attitude.  LMAO

To me, karaoke is all about fun anyhow. I had to adapt that frame of mind, or make myself go through sheer panic sometimes.

Now, singing with a band, to me is a different story. They pulled a couple new ones out of the hat for me last week, and said "Hey, let's try this one". It was fun, and just a regular jam night at the bar.... but still.... it got my nerves to acting up. I take that a bit more seriously than I do karaoke.  But I got my feedback, Odie was there.  LOL

I have sang for years like most of you. I still get embarrassed by applause.
I'd rather people acted like nothing happened. Is that wierd or what?

I'm the same way Babs, I'd rather slink away quietly back to my seat. When people stop you to compliment or something.... I shy away. But, I'm that way in other areas too. I've never been a person to take any kind of compliment well, I usually come back with some dumb, sassy remark.... or turn red with a mumbled "thanks".... which is stupid, cause I don't know how other people take that. In high school, alot of people thought I was stuck up, and in truth, I was just terribly shy. (yes... me.... shy)  :D



It's going great. Having alot of fun. The one gig turned into an "every monday" thing, and I usually try to go to that one atleast. I'm just still singing with this band I got hooked up with, as kinda their "country singer". I'm gonna hang with them for a bit, cause we have some big gigs coming up that I promised to do with them. Then, after the first of the year, I may decide to get busy doing  my own thing.  Not sure yet, but I'm meeting alot of great musicians in the process, and that's a good thing.  And this band... really welcomes me with open arms, so for the time being... this is what I'm gonna do.  Last monday, I did 8 songs.... that's enough for me for now, until I get brave enough to try starting a whole new band. TY for asking.

Dang Chuck and here I thought I just needed to get opinions from listeners.  Do I need to leave my mic laying on the monitor too?
