You all miss the point.
You can do whatever works for you. But do not call yourself a KJ, whenever you put in all of the filler music. You are a DJ, that KJs, sometimes. Don't try to fool people into thinking you are a KJ. I am a KJ. You are a DJ that plays karaoke music. The more you cater to the dance music crowd, the less of a KJ you become. You will end up putting yourself out of the karaoke business, sonny.
You will cause the death of karaoke, as it is known now.
With every gig you are becoming more of a DJ/ wannabe KJ.
A karaoke bar is a karaoke bar. Not a dance music, when I feel like playing karaoke bar.
You look at it your way and I'll look at it mine. I do karaoke. You do a variation of it.
Find a DJ forum, to talk to your kind. This is a karaoke forum. Not a DJ/sometimes KJ forum.
I have made more karaoke money, from my make believe jobs LMAO than most of you put together. LMAO It's how I will continue to make my money. All from karaoke, not from filler music, because I can't entertain a crowd, karaoke.
I'm a full time KJ, not a DJ, that plays part time karaoke music.
You cheapen my profession. :(
You call it "adapting" with the times. I'll call it what it REALLY is. You can not entertain and keep a karaoke crowd. You are in DJ denial. What will you call yourself whenever the filler music is over half of your show, because you chased away all of the karaoke singers? Will you still be a KJ? Trying to blame it on non singing customer demands. Try doing what you where hired for. Good, full time "entertaining" 100% karaoke.
It takes hard work to survive. Not just slapping in a DJ disc. Soon, very soon you will wake up :asleep: and be a full time DJ. Don't bother upgrading your mikes, you won't need them too much longer.
You will be in the KJ graveyard. Spinning filler music for the rest of the dead KJs, that thought they needed to "ADAPT" themslves to death. LMAO LMAO LMAO LMAO

You guys seem to be forgetting one thing, BD is THE host we should all measure up to. We should NEVER tell WHERE we play on an open forum. We should always BRAG about what we have & do & NOT be able to prove any of it. NEVER advetise or have a website as he gets all the work he can use just by being him/her. We should ALWAYS put everyone else down that doesn't do as he/she does & call them names if something actually WORKS in their show that he considers unprofessional. We all need to use inferior equipment...ok not inferior, just lacking for most people here use, 1 amp for a sub AND satellite combo with no crossover, 10 year old effect processing, no compressors, no stage, no lights.
C'mon, we are all just kidding ourselves, if BD was in our area, none of us would have jobs....Funny thing is he said he's moving to computers...that would be considered 'adapting' to new technology, so he automatically contradicts himself there.
Everyone is arguing with someone who has everything to TRY & backup but can't/won't! He probably works in a small town with small time clubs that can't afford real karaoke & he makes a decent living off of them. Until he/she actually grows some nuts & lets people know were they can come & see him/her, let it go & quit arguing, blow hards are just that, just hope his knees aren't hurting! Words are nothing more!

of course BD if one doesnt adapt or be proffessionally open to change then one doesnt seize the chance when innovation arrives to become the shepherd rather than the sheep

Shouldn't mention sheep, it might be something he relates to intimately.

Quote: From a singer point of view I am in total AGREEMENT with BD.
Yes and that was the way for many years.. However more and more people have their own system at home now. Most are better than the sytems in the bars. They are staying home if they want to sing non stop... When they do go out they are not a newbie that has to sing every rotation or throw a tantrum if they dont get to sing.. They are more sophisticated now.
The bars are the ones that are adapting For example the bayou has singles night tue with DJ and the theme now is line dance (they got tired of salsa) Of course maybe half of the singles are karaoke singers. One could squeeze a few singers in and there wouldnt be any reaction or griping...And it wouldnt be adulterating a DJ profession or downgading it in any way. It is providing a service to the club that caters to what the CUSTOMERS WANT.....I have done consults with bar owners that sit there and say we will have country only.... I walk out. If they want to cover the pool table and put on a feast then thats what the bar does. When you are capable of providing either or a combination of both then you will be hosting parties in the bar for the same people that do karaoke there... min $300.... Another night with a long z tape which makes the bar happy.
Some nights it is pure karaoke in fact most of the time the last hour is nothing but esp if a late crowd comes bopping in. Now if you cant understand the above concept then do pure karaoke, but dont act like some kid and insult my integrity, ability or many years of experience with your bullshit.. If you cant sit down and discuss business methods in a positive mature manner and discover other ways of doing things then stay wherever you are at...
There are people on this forum that glean knowledge from others as to new equipt music, venues, ways that work but we are getting tired of the few that want to turn every thread into their broken record soap box and petty crap..There are three themes on here that I have had it to the gills..
My way is the only way and if you dont do it my way you will die
I am smarter than you and my guesses are more accurate than your experience and actually doing it
You are illegal and the karaoke cops are going to bust you and you will be shot by a firing squad.

I've been in this business a long time and travelled all over the USA. ( can't comment on the rest of the world) But I've never really seen a "KARAOKE BAR"
MAYBE IN JAPAN. What I've seen are BARS/RESTAURANTS/CLUBS that offer Karaoke as a form of entertainment on certain nights. I"ve never seen the sign ON THE DOOR that say's KARAOKE SINGERS ONLY - IF YOU DON'T WANT TO HEAR NOTHING BUT KARAOKE SINGING GO SOMEWHERE ELSE.
I understand that you also offer DJ services ...so are you a DJ? or a KJ? or does it depend on the job ? ...EXACTLY ..If I understand your thinking if on a night you had NO singers the bar would either be SILENT or have to deal with YOU singing all night long ? or you would play karaoke music with no vocals.
Again I applaud your conviction ... Like Captain of a sinking ship. Keep refusing to be open minded. Keep thinking that the way to go is 100% Karaoke or NOTHING
Of course every moron knows that if you have a large rotation that the singers want to sing and the more times they get to sing the BETTER the show is perceived to be. This is about the times you don't have a 25 person rotation or the clientele in the bar is weighted to the NON SINGERS or just maybe the manager wants MORE of a variety in the bar.

Tommie
I agree that a Karaoke Night is just that ..KARAOKE. I have many regulars that come out expecting to be able to sing every Saturday. Many other non-singers that come down to listen and some who could give a rats azz about karaoke. A good KJ can read the crowd and keep he rotations moving and the singers singing.
This isn't an argument about the right and wrong way to run a Karaoke Show.
This was/is a discussion on How to be prepared for those nights that the 25 singers don't come out and what to do to keep the non singers who are REQUESTING some regular music happy. I say as hired entertainers , a good KJ must be able to adapt to those nights. Some say - NO - It's Karaoke Night or go some place else.
As a businessman I think that is closed minded. The bar entertainment industry is changing as othe KJ's all around the country have been noting. As a singer I know you just want one thing on karaoke night- TO SING . Can't blame you or any other singer for wanting that. As a KJ I need to be concerned with How to Keep the singers happy and the bar full of people all at the same time. If you're one of these singers that think you and your 3 buddies should be able to sing every 15 minutes or your not happpy I suggest you guys chip in a few bucks and get into the KJ business and sing all night long or better yet as a Hobbyist maybe these PURE KAROKE nights should charge to sing as we did in the past >>>> WHAT OTHER HOBBY OUT THERE IS FREE ? GOLF? BOWLING? TENNIS? STAMP COLLECTING?

I admit that I like going to the shows that do only karaoke. Sometimes I'll find one that can keep me entertained with other stuff.
When I am out for the evening the most important thing to me is to be able to hear the person or people I am out with when having a conversation. The secong is being entertained.

Re read my post bigdog. I was actually AGREEING with you. I don't DJ at my karaoke shows either. I've left shows as a customer because I was there to sing and the KJ started playing other stuff.
I was simply pointing out the inconsistencies in your logic about keeping the nonsigers happy.
I believe you called me an idiot for this before, but I'm not there to keep the non-singers happy. You, on the other hand, say you are. If that's true, then maybe playing a non-karaoke request is what you need to do to keep your nonsingers happy. Honestly I don't see what the difference is between playing a non-karaoke request and having you inject yourself into the rotation. Either way it adds up to one less song that a paying customer gets to sing.
I'm there to pull in singers and others who want the karaoke experience. If "BIG MIKE KARAOKE TONIGHT" is on the marquee out front and you come in the door, don't be pist off if you see a karaoke show! It's like walking into a gentlemen's club and being offended by all the nudity! Generally the nonsingers at my shows either
A) Came in with their singing friends
B) Are in the bar anyway and don't give a damn if karaoke is happening or not
C) Are future singers who haven't worked up the nerve yet.
You wanna dance, dance to the karaoke!

The non-singers at one of the clubs I go to just like having entertainment. In this part of Texas most people like most kinds of music. Classic rock is still very big here too.
I've had non-singers ask me or Gigi to sing certain songs that they liked. I've even had them ask me not to sing some songs that I have done too much. I've gotten free beer for both.

I'll be the FIRST to admit I hate dance breaks or lots of "filler"
Was at a show where the host was playing this CRAP! OMG!! gave me a headache. We finally left two hours later, and we were the only singers in the place other than the KJ and one other singer, because she was playing this junk between us, and it was loud and obnoxious!!
At the END she finally started playing stuff that was humorus or stuff that was easier on the ears. She had some college kids in and was playin' THEIR kind of music. Even they were like "if you're going to play it, PLAY it all the way!"

ROTFLMAO....
I realy think some are missing the BIG PICTURE/POINT. You are hired by a bar owner to bring in more revenue for the bar. That is it, and that is all. Call yourself a KJ, DJ, host, entertainer, or whatever you want, you are still there to make more $$$ for the bar. I consider my self a Host for the evening, I am there to make sure everyone (as many as possible), has a good time and enjoy themselves. I am not the one caving away from karaoke, it is the customers of the bar that are wanting more "real" music. I would love to have a 100% karaoke only show, and come close to that a lot of nights. But again there are people in there that want dj music, and if they are spending money, they will get what they want.
So far I beliove I have maintaied a good balance of karaoke and DJ, no one has complained, no one has walked out, and the BAR IS MAKING MORE $$$$$$$, which is the bottom line.
