Good for you MIB...one thing that has always helped me is anytime I feel the urge I think to myself, "You know, I think I'll have that drink TOMORROW instead"...works every time. I can sympathize with you on your gigs--it's one reason I don't play piano bars any more....too many people forcing drinks on you, and while I have no problems with people who can drink responsibly and enjoy their cocktails, it's altogether not a good place for me to be in. Good luck!

Go ahead... I usually do my "flattened to the ground" jokes right after that.

Well I broke my promise tonight and had a shot. After the act had finished playing their last set we were sitting at the bar watching the news when the rumors of Bin Ladens death came on. At the same time a guy was setting up the bar, and ask if I wanted a shot, at first I declined. But then I said, I will accept under one condition, that we toast to the hopes that the rumors are true and in fact Bin Laden is dead. Everyone in the bar voiced a unanimous 'HELL YEAH', so I did it.

Now do I feel bad having a toast wishing that Bin was dead, no way. But I do feel bad that I broke my promise on drinking.
The next round that was bought, no one bothered me. They know that I am a person who tries to stand behind their word and principals, so I respect the fact that they respected my wishes.

Some will say, 'hey it's just one shot MIB, don't be so hard on yourself.' and while that may be true, it's a promise and a vow that I would like to see through. And again, I'm not taking the holier than thou attitude, I just want to live my life without the crutches that I've used in the past. I think most of you can relate.

James

James, I can understand your feelings about having the shot.  I won't judge you but (whoops, there's that dang word again) I want you to congratulate yourself on being able to stop after just the one.  I've seen too many people who just couldn't do that.

Too often people trying to stop drinking will beat themselves in the head for "falling off the wagon" one night or two.  I've seen people in AA be chastised unmercifully for something like that and it's not only unnecessary it is defeating.   The important thing is to forget about it and get right back on the road to abstinence.  I've done it a few times myself even after a couple years of laying off the sauce.  It's not the amount of time you've been continually off alcohol but just being sober today that is the goal I would think.  It truly is a "one day at a time" mission in life.

Yep,

I believe that Themaninblack did something very brave when he took that shot.

He fought his fears and tested himself against what he knew to be a dangerous and destructive enemy....and he won.

Some folks might say he fell off the wagon or allowed peer pressure to influence him...That is not what happened....He tested himself.....Bravely.

Themaninblack no longer fears alcohol.....his simply respects it.... And he also now respects himself more since he beat it and proved he beat it by saying no to that second drink.

It is one thing for a man to avoid something out of fear, it is another to avoid it out of respect...One is a weak coward, while the other is strong and wise.

Something tells me Themaninblack wants to fear nothing, he just wants to be the best man he can be.

Not all heros are created on the battlefield. Many regular folks wear invisible scars and medals that only they can see.....Earned in battles only they fought.....And often those battles were fought againts themself....Eitherway, the winners are still heros because only the brave fight and test themself willingly in battle against their greatest fears.

What comes easy for for me can sometimes be very hard for another. And viceversa.

My fears may mean nothing to you...And your fears might mean nothing to me....What matters and what ranks us against each other is how we handle our individual fears.....For some of us it is a true act of bravery to just venture out in public where others jump off cliffs and buildings......All who do either and all in between might be heros.....Because it is all relative.

So now you understand why I respect that a man who can drink one drink and then brag about it, while I can drink all night and have nothing to brag about compared to him is a hero in my eyes. He did something once I can do all night, but he is better than me?....Yes.....He won a battle I don't have to fight, but at least he faced it and beat it.

If later, I find the same fear he faced in a different battle, then that is my chance to be as good as him......It's all relative, and it's different for each of us.

Altho our fears are different, they a equally scarey.

Anyone who says they don't judge others, have no prejudices, or profile others,  are liars.  We as human beings have it ingrained into us and we use it as a survival mechanism.  It may not be politically correct but it is being human.

You don't believe me?  Next time you walk down the street, keep an account of your thoughts as you pass other people, especially those not of your race or religion.

Re: Booze and Posts Don't Mix

True. I've been racking my brain but I can't think of any way to make the two work together in a drink.

having a passing thought is one thing... actively seeking out to alienate someone and acting on your impulsive reaction to somebody is yet another.

My pardon, but it's hard to conceive being prejudicial as a survival mechanism. Perhaps I'm incorrect, but wouldn't that actually be counteractive in the scheme of things?  I do not prevaricate!
