I know most of the time when we talk about Karaoke disc, reference is made to CD+G.
Does anyone here use or have used DVD Karaoke. If so, were they any good, and if good, what company do you recommend. I have no experience with these, but notice that you get like a 100 songs on DVD compared to 15 and twice the price regular cd's.
Just curious,

James

I have no experience with DVD karaoke, but have heard on this site that their major drawback is that the seek time to cue up a song is much longer compared to CDGs.

Seek time isn't that bad on a player that the original format is dvd. I find on those players, the seek time is WORSE for the cdgs, as the player has to change formats... it first checks for it's default, then goes thru the various options that are built into it.

I used to do Pioneer dvds (until I got the lasers in a converted format... some I did, and the others were already done by someone else). The only thing I had the problem with was the menu. I had to run a splitter on my player AND have a secondary video which I could find the song on the menu and get it ready.

For a non-mobile setup, it's a no brainer. Once you have it set up, it's there.  But for a mobile operation, it's that much more crap you have to haul in, hook up, maintain, unhook at the end of the night, etc.

But as far as the playing of them, perfectly fine, and I really enjoyed them.

Oppps a two finger typing dupe post.   LMAO

The menu thingy....yuk     :(

I do not like the menu search screens coming up.   Looks too unprofessional for me.   That is why I had the Pioneer Lasers converted to VCD.   But  now I'm converting them to a hard drive, much better quality.

IMO the video keeps more people entertained and also reduces the crowd noise.  That is important for the singers.   Nobody wants to hear some loud mouth talking over their singing.    I use them every chance I get.      That's why the hard drive conversion.   I'll be switching to computer and I want to use them.   I won't switch over until I have them all done.   I only have about 2,000 songs w/videos, but most of them are popular songs.

I agree about the unprofessionality of it B.D., that's why I had the split video where I could preview it, and set it up right! LOL!

I've never used them. I heard they were very expensive. Plus I have the
option on my video set up to play video behind the words. I always turn it off
because people say it is harder to read the words. Is this also a problem with dvd?

Well I broke down and bought a DVD Karaoke, it's a two disc set of mostly hard rock/metal, so I would probably end up being the only person that would use it at one of my shows. It had a great selection of Billy Idol tunes on it, so what the hell.
I bought it off of Ebay, from a lady in Great Britain. Pound conversion being what it is, my total was only 15 bucks. So that's not much to spend to find out what it's all about.
Anyways, as soon as I get it and try it out, I'll let you folks know.

James, with it being of British origin, did she say it was compatible with the NTSC video signals we use over here?  Because, if it's PAL-only, you may have an issue...

When I was doing overseas cruises with the Navy, guys bought PlayStation and PS2 games left and right because they were dirt cheap...but what a few of them figured out the hard way was they had to have a converter chip put in their consoles to play the PAL games they bought on our NTSC TVs

Do some crowd noise comparisons, betwen the videos and just the words.   Let us know if you notice any difference.

I'm using an Acesonic machine that is both PAL/NTSC compatable.
Yes this is one that I will definitely check out throughly before I take it out to a show, just to get use to the different format, menu's etc.
If for some reason, it turns out not to play properly in my unit, I have conversion programs on my comp that will take care of the problem. Thanks for the heads up though, I appreciate you looking out for me.

Bigdog, do me a fav, I'm not quite sure if I understand what you're referring to. Since I'm a novice and this is all new to me, could you clarify, so that I'm sure that I understand what you're talking about. Thanks.

James I think she is referring to whether or not the crowd gets more involved with the DVD/video compared to the CD+G versions where just the words come up.  Are they quieter because they can't read the words or are they quieter because they are watching the video.
Flip side, do they get more involved because of the video or less interested.

I think that's what she meant.

Not a problem, amigo.  I'm a troubleshooter by nature and occupation, so I look for stuff like that.  :handshake:

And, honestly, I'm kinda eager to hear how it works out!

LOL, doh, that was way too simple, thank you for making what should have been the obvious clear to me. Been a busy week, played all four days last weekend, then again this past Wednesday and then again last night, so I'm not quite up to speed on things.
Good point though, I haven't really thought that much about it, since the only monitor visible is the one the singers view. But my one gig has just bought two brand new 60' HDTV's....hmmmm, wonder if he would let me tap into those. Jeeze, I could start the MOK, MONSTERS OF KARAOKE with a set up like that.

Thank you Bigdog and thank you dsharrow.

I know where every tree in the forest is, BUMP, there's one now!!!!!!

You're welcome.  I've found the crowd gets much more involved when they can see what the singer sees.  It also helps the newbies to see how it would look when they get up to the mike (WOW is that what the words changing colors means?? LMAO )

The player I just purchased for the hotel I work for is a dvd player Cavs 203 usb. It plays scdg (super cdg) and they hold approx 950 songs on a dvd. The player came with 5 discs (4500 songs). I went this way because it is to be used as a hire machine for those having functions at the hotel that didnt wish to go to the expense of paying a band or dj. I selected the usb version of the Cavs player so as I could plug in an external harddrive. This could be used to store cdg if I wish but I wanted it to store dj mixes. I have several folders of music that I have mixed down to one hour sets. You can programe the machine to play one item in a folder or all of the folder, so for me it was ideal to be able to provide a multi-functional player for people to hire

and of course we only hire out the machine with one disc of 950 songs, no need to remove the disc from the player therefore the discs wont get scratched.
I have set it up in a nice road case with amp and mixer plus a little tv on a trolly and grunty JBL speakers
For the money they have to outlay $150 the punters are getting a reasonable system for their buck

This is for everyone.   The more TVs you can get the karaoke on in the bar, the better.  It greatly helps with the crowd to get them involved.   They can sing along and read the words or watch the videos.     Get those TVs hooked up.

I finally got my Karaoke DVD's this week.
Good news- 210 songs, all of them killer, full disc of Billy Idol, Metallica, U2, Kansas, AC/DC, tons of great rock tunes.

Bad news- they were all copies of Soundchoice tunes, so in other words the DVD was a bootleg, no videos, just cd+g's. They have since been pulled from Ebay.

I had paid Paypal the day before, the seller processed the payment, not more than an hour later, Ebay pulled his stuff. I had no idea that they would be bootleg, because his item description listed them as being new.
On one hand, yes I bought them unaware, on the other hand, the DVD is a topnotch homemade job. Cover is great, menu is great, title selection is great. This guy should actually be working for a Karaoke company. In short, I'm keeping the disc, it only cost me 15 bucks American. I only wish it had been a legit product.
Footnote-as a matter of being a responsible Karaoke KJ, I will not post these titles in my book for the public. But as a singer, I will indeed keep them for my personal use.
That may be a contradiction in morals, so be it.
So once again, make sure you check your items very closely at Ebay, and do not hesitate to contact the seller and ask questions. I did learn a lesson, thank goodness it wasn't that expensive of a lesson.
But anyway, end of story.

Ebay is a wondeful idea.    It's just full of jerks trying to rip everyone off.    I stay away. :O
