Hi everybody from sunny old England. I am trying to set up a home karaoke system using my PC. This might sound stupid but can someone explain the difference between a powered and non powered mixer? :wave: [align=left][/align]

A powered mixer has a built in amp, a non-powered needs an external amp!

powered mixer you use passive speakers, non powered mixer you need to have powered speakers

They are both correct. :D , but you can still use powered speakers with a powered mixer by bypassing the builtin mixer amp....ta-da!

You can also use non-powered speakers with a non-powered board provided there is an external amp in the equation.

The guy asked a simple question and we had several right answers, but all different.....I sure hope he don't think we a jerking him around LOL

Lonman's response still stands....

1. Powered mixer, passive speaker...use the internal amp of the mixer.
2. Powered mixer, powered speaker...bypass the internal amp of the mixer.
3. un-powered mixer, passive speaker...you neead an external amp.
4. un-powered mixer, powered speaker... noting extra needed, the amp is built in the speaker.

Hope that clears it up for the OP.

Yes, it stands, but it is still missing one last leg:

Powered mixer with external power amp connected to passive speakers....

Done by using line level outs on powered mixer, not main outs.....simple solution when you need larger amp and speaker but still have only a powered mixer.

Well, now that could be dependant on the manu.  Old Peavey mixer/amp 'line' outs were labled 'main' out.  Most of the time they will be labled 'pre' out or pre amp out.
