Years ago when I started doing karaoke I could mimic Hank Snow or all the old country singers.. As time went by I mimiced Frank Sinatra and Neil Diamond  I gradually developed a style of my own which was not country rock or any genre It  was me... There are Elvis impersonators who are good but are not artists...

In the time that I have done karaoke I have probably sang upwards to 1000 different songs ..And I dont mimic I sing my way ...And the more ways you do it the more talented you get....

I've always sang my own way...mostly because that's the only way I CAN sing...  LOL  

No...I do wanna sound like ME...put my own personal touch on a song ya know?  I don't think I ever sing any song the same way twice...no matter how many times I sing it...  It makes it more fun and keeps it interesting for me.  :)  I do, however, try to keep the original "feel" of the song.

I've tried to imitate so many artists, I don't even know what my voice sounds like anymore(problikesht)...........and I don't care...

You better slide over to SS and listen to one of my subs before you say that....hehehehe!!

I think this is a great topic. I usually try to get down the same rhythms of
the original artist. Certain songs are well known enough you don't want
to leave out ohs, ahs, mmm, or uhs that the original artist uses because people are expecting them. My voice is me. I can't really mimic a sound. People tell me when I sing Pat Benatar songs I sound like her, but it isn't on purpose. Even when I try an accent for country songs it doesn't sound like it. If it's a blues song that's a totally different thing. When I do the blues sometimes the same song comes out completely different everytime.  LMAO

Some people can mimic very well. I've heard a person do Elvis than turn around
and do a Billy Joel song and be able to mimic them almost perfectly. I think it is a talent by itself.

I can sing about 600 songs.     I mimic all of them.     Lots of times people thought the jukebox was playing.  

So when I first hear a song I determine if I can hit the right notes at the right times & if I can halfway do that, I try it. If it ends up sounding like the original Im very happy, but usually it ends up sounding like me, which is pretty ok with me too. So I dunno I think I try to mimic most of the time but it doesnt usually work out like that I think its so kool when someone really sounds like the person that originally sings the song. JMO

I remember in the Singer's Forum, Kappy had asked this question about how did you learn to sing.  It occurred to me last night as I was singing to myself absent mindedly that I probably first learned to sing by recreating the solos performed in the old swing records vocally....I loved that music so much.  I probably listened to Sinatra the most and due to my voice being in the same kind of range and pitch of his I can sound like I'm mimicking him but the last few months I have been developing my own "sound" and so far I think it's coming about.   I think there is nothing wrong at all about "mimicking" a singer or singers you admire.  I have many that I've studied over the years and these folks learned the same way...you take all that and do your own spin on it I guess.

I studied piano with the same teacher for some 8 years before she told me I had to study with another teacher.  Why? Because I was starting to "sound" just like her when I played--picked up all her tricks! So, another teacher and I added more to what I knew and eventually, just blended all this into something of my own, I hope!

I usually start off by mimicing the origianl artist to help me get the feel of the melody. When I have it down I often relax into my own style.

I would say one of the first things I look for is something I know is in my range too. Mostly
I look for songs that will get the crowd going or involved.

I love to sing out of my range. Baritone and add to octaves higher, really gets the blood flowing. Great way to meet the neighbors too.

I don't worry about whether I sound like the original artists--I just sing.

Oh Laura, you make everything sound so simple.. ...it's not that simple....karaoke takes tedious study, and careful planning from the first note to the fading on the last few..  LMAO .....I lock myself in my room for days, just going over a single song, over and over and over again.. ..only to show up at the bar, and find out that theeeeeey haaaaaave a baaaaand tonight, and karaoke's been cancelled......I think I'll go sing to an on-comming train....

Well, I try my best to keep the same feel and style that the original artist had for whatever song I am singing at the time.  I pretty much know my range, so I dont try to venture too far away from that. I never really have developed my own style as a singer, and that is why I will never do it professionally.  

So, the subject "Mimic vs Singing"--I believe you can mimic and still be singing too.
