Chuck, How do you know when you are straining vs improving by practicing ? if I push at the higher register, is that straining ?

It's the same as exercising a muscle. It gets stronger with work. If you strain it it will hurt more than just exercising it. It gets easier every time. Just use as little effort as you can.
Just don't do it to the point where it hurts worse than a regular sore throat.
I know this isn't specific enough, if you start a thread in SS about it or a more specific question here about it you can get answers from someone who teaches voice.
Also, vocal scales in your chest voice (regular voice) can improve your throat voice and haed voice.

Err you should never get to the sore point
If you have you have gone too far

Thanks, I'll take this to Singer's Forum. I don't think I can sing a full octave in chest voice !

Dear KS,
I am fine. Hope you are too. I'd send a postcard but I'm too cheap. Been playing three hours a day of guitar trying to get back into shape. I decided it's what I need to do in order to feel good about myself. Typing online all day and night although fun, isn't quite so productive.. Even when I'm multitasking. Somehow, for some sick reason I got the idea I was too old to learn anything new, and I reminded myself that this is never the case (when Eben was discussing learning an instrument).. Since I told Eben older people can learn quickly, I decided to practice what I preached (typed in this case)... This weekend has been a "Gary Moore" contemporary blues session tape... and I think stepping away from music for awhile has actually been beneficial in-so-far as ruts I was in are easier to break, and the stubborn difficult learning period sort've passed... It's sometimes easier to improve when you have taken some time off and go back... WHY ? I haven't a clue... I've just found this to be the case... I had to make a decision that I own so dang many guitars, Guitar is my favorite instrument to play.. and although I'm not a soloist... They tell me I can't take them with me, and truth is, some of these guitars haven't had their case opened in 25+ years.... Why collect them if they stay hidden ?
I decided to get back into music... at least start practicing my @ss off... It's a good feeling to accomplish more than typing...
Catch you on the flip flop dudes and
dudesses.... I'm not going anyplace
Just trying to stop saying I'm a has-been.
Plugging away trying to "be"... Just like
you folks.. You don't talk about when you
sang... You sing !

I think what you're doing is great Kappy although I miss you.
It would be so cool if you could sub some of your playing.

Well, the mill-rate on my pup tent three threads east increased. I couldn't afford my increased rent, and Phill refused to convert my lot into section-8 housing, figured it's a good time to sell the lot... Real estate is doing too well :(

There's hope Steven. The real estate bubble just burst.
Good thing we don't own more than one house right now.

Between gas prices, and the new room at the YMCA in the KS burbs, I haven't been able to show up as frequently. On a positive note, I won a red-star (and placed second) in the Parkinsonian Synchronized (middle-aged group) swimming contest that took place right here in the YMCA pool. Hopefully within the next two weeks there'll be another member besides myself on the synchronized swim team
