There is a bar in Canby that has great KJ's, a good sound system, a good current selection of songs (lots of Sound Choice) BUT they have the video monitor on the stage with their equipment. The singer ends up facing away from or to the side of the audience. Maybe the KJ is trying to encourage dancing but doesn't want to risk damage to the video monitor by having it on the dance floor -- I don't know. Has anybody seen this kind of setup before? Being able to view the face/front of the singer seems pretty essential to me from a normal entertainment standpoint.

Kind of silly to me. But over here the monitors are up the walls and pillars. In the bigger place there can be 8 of them.

Rule #1 of performance....never turn your back to the audience!!
I've never seen this before and imagine that it would drain a bit of the energy out of any performance....

Never seen this done, any place i've ever been has a monitor in front for viewing or a tv viewable from the stage/singing area that still allows for facing the crowd.

place I started out had a huge tv screen, and one smaller monitor, but it was a long ways away. They finally adapted and bought another tv and hung it a bit closer.
Their dance floor filled up all the time, and that was basically where the singer stood, looking out at the smaller monitor. With the cordless mic, you could move wherever you wanted, but only could see the tvs from about half of the bar.
But my first few times singing, that was how I did it, with my back basically to the audience. Was weird, until I learned to look at the much smaller monitor. It's also why when I sang karoke, I only sang stuff I pretty much knew!
When I branched off on my own about a year later, that's when I started doing multiple monitors!

LCD monitors are getting cheaper these days. I have a friend who is considering buying some for his show but also plans on building an extra case to protect them from singer's touching the screen.

I've never seen that done before either. I can't imagine having my back to the
audience. I would think the audience would simple not watch the singer much if this was the case.
I almost bought a LCD monitor. I thought it would be lighter and easier to transport.
Bad idea. My tv has hit the floor a couple times. It is a cheap Walmart tv that takes a beating and keeps on working.

A great way to get yeld at after a play is to turn your back on the audience. I had a director want to kill me for that once. I don't think he ever got over it.

Hi Babs , I'll have to warn my friend about the floor meeting the monitor issue if he hasn't already considered it.
I don't know of any places 'round here that has the singers not facing the audience. There is one place that has the audience in a semi-circle around the stage. 270 degrees of audience. That can be a little intimidating.

Yeah, I had one lady take a dive straight off the front of
the stage on top of the tv. She actually broke the wheel off the
stand. Another time I had a big guy that was
dancing simple fall into it and over it went. That is from my set up now.
My old setup I can't even remember how many times it hit the floor.
I just remember the tv having a big crack in it from it. I place the tv monitor
on the floor in front of the stage, so there is a 12" platform behind it. That helps,
but no matter where I put it it seems to be inevitable it will get knocked over.
Maybe this is why the guy puts it where he does.

What kind of stand do you use? In all the years i've worked, i've had 1 tv take a tumble & that was my fault while I was breaking down.
You all can laugh all you want , this is what I use, a 13" tv tucks nicely between the straps & angles up perfectly.
Best of all, it only costs $15! Never had one take a tumble yet & is the perfect height, and again, hold a 13" tv perfectly at a nice viewing angle.

This is my stand. I have had a wheel broken off and the cup holder bent
flat to the pole from a person falling on it. http://www.sumakaya.com/product.asp?sku=HAY000003
I have to admit I have dropped my tv once tearing down too.
I think it probably is my venue that is the most trouble. The tables are very close to the stage and people try to dance there.

We had a singer the other night that tried to keep his back to everyone but had to twist around to see the monitor Looked like a bloomin' pretzel and by the time he got up the fourth time I wondered how he could even stand!

We have a large screen tv behind and above the singers head so everyone
can see. If someone wanted to turn around and sing they can. It usually
only happens when the guys in the audience are making the person laugh so much they can't sing.

I have seen people turn around occasionally and look at the bigger screen behind them (if there is one), especially if they are out among the crowd singing, but I don't think I've ever seen anyone do a whole song w/their back to the crowd. However, I have seen kj's who adjust their equipment while singing their first song. I know they _have_ to do that, but it does seem rather odd to hear someone up there singin' away, but rather than facing the crowd, they're fiddling with their sound system!

I got's the same stand, and it 's great. I did take the whels off though. And if the crownd is a roudy one, I place a sand bag on the legs to give some extra support.
I love going to shows, or seing pics of peoples setups, and they are too dam cheap to buy a TV stand. I've seen tvs on the fllor, setting on a chair, and on BIG tables. IMHO, having a proper TV stand make a setup look MUCH cleaner!!!!
And I can't belive that someone would setup so that a singer had to turn away from the crowd to see the screen. Just kinda weird.
