I want them to learn to write.  It is amazing how many students today have terrible penmanship.  It is almost impossible to read what they write.  Many students can only print and they do that very poorly.  I agree, spell check and grammar check are a real problem.  More than that, online chatting is a problem because of the tendency to use slang and acronyms for various words and or phrases.  Then you can forget about asking a student to punctuate, they don't know how!  I think computers are wonderful.  I think students need to know how to use them and I think we should let them take advantage of the technology that is available to our world today.  To me, the problem lies in the fact that many students are proficient in computer technology and can correct their papers with spell check and grammar check, but they can't use a pencil, pen, and a piece of paper to communicate.  I think it is still important to be able to write.

COMPLETELY AGREE!  I hope my kids get teachers like you that put emphasis on spelling, writing, grammar, etc...without the aid of computers!

Thank you very much! I do really care about my students. I want them to be able to function in the adult world as productive citizens not just men and women who were able to slide out of high school with a diploma.  There are many teachers who really want the best for their students and they work really hard to teach the kids. I am sure your children are in contact with teachers like this on a daily basis.

LMAO Mike - that is so funny you have dealt with it so much you can actually write that way. Your students sound like they came from the Getto. Why kids think talking like a thug is cool is beyond me. I live in an upper class Chicago suburb. My daughter  came home with a date once that was talking all getto and wore street
clothes with bling bling. When he called my fiancee home boy I thought I'd die laughing. Needless to say she only dated him once. She called him a poser.  LMAO

lol It actually took me a little while to write all of that! lol I had to hit my hand to stop me from correcting all of the bad grammar and spelling! lol Yes, I have actually seen kids write this way a lot.  There are no gettos where I live and these kids all come from pretty decent middle class families.  lol I think that there are several factors that are involved in their choice of bad linguistics.  I think that kids today have a fairly poor choice of role models to look up to.  When the people they look up to are the rappers, in particular the gangster rappers on MTV (I am not bashing the network or their genre, I just don't think they are positive role models for the kids) and the lifestyles of these individuals is painted to be so glamorous and interesting, the kids want to be like them.  To be honest, it is hard to find decent role models for kids in most professions these days.  Many in the world of pro athletics believe they can live above the law, country music is not what it used to be either.  Even worse, many kids do not have very good role models in their parents. Many parents have their children and  then want someone else to raise them.  The kids grow up without the guidance of mom and dad like most of us had in my generation and others before me.  I have had kids tell me that I  was the only person they knew that cared about them. To me, that is very sad and heartbreaking.  I also go back to the idea that computer chat rooms have been a real problem when it comes to helping students stay on the right course with their writing/spelling skills.

Good to meet/hear you Mike.  I work for a school district and I can't get over the teachers who believe that the computer is a tool to make it easier for the child when, I believe, all it really does is make it easier for the teacher.

:worship: I commend you on your perspective.  The army taught me that a little blood, sweat and tears now could save me an immense amount of grief later.  My teachers, when I was growing up, had the same belief.  Calculators were not allowed in math class, typewriters were not allowed for papers until high school, 2 semesters of latin and 2 semesters of a foreign language (latin didn't count as a foreign language) were a must.  Kids today think latin is a dance genre.

Ummmm, Mike, it's spelled ghetto...  LMAO

You KNOW I couldn't let that one get by!  And yes, I know that was a typo, I'm just playing with you, as usual!!!   LMAO

Seriously, I commend you for being such a caring teacher.  I agree with a lot of what you said.  I strive to make sure that Jackie's reading and writing, above all, is at least up to par.  I started reading to her when she was a baby and I'm sure that grabbed her interest and kept it there because her teachers have always told me how amazed they are by her writing skills compared to others her age.  Reading and writing are such basic skills and so necessary when learning anything.  Thank you for doing your job so well and for going the extra mile.   :D

Same here.  Just thought I'd hang out at the forum for a little bit.  I haven't felt like recording anything lately, so I thought I'd rib you a little while I was here.  LOL

Sweet dreams, Mike.  I'm headed to la-la-land.

I still believe spelling matters.  Of course, as a teacher I would perhaps place more emphasis on it than others might.  My point concerns the kids who spend so much time on computers these days.

You know, one reason I worry about kids these days and computers is that so many are on them, but most haven't taken any formal typing lessons. They all use a hodge podge finger poking / picking style. That must be heck to unlearn and learn to do it right.

Luly, you'll want to change your signature... there are four "photobucket" images rather than the ones you're trying to link in!

The school system I teach at does provided instruction for students.  Each elementary school has a computer wing and starting in first grade, kids begin learning to type properly.  In middle school, the kids are required to take one semester of keyboarding (the old typewriters), and one semester of computers.  We have 3 computer labs for students to use at our middle school consisting of 620 students. All of the computers are within 2 years old and are running XP.  As far as I know, every computer in our school district is made by Dell.  They are replacing all of our monitors at the present with 19 inch flat screens.  Our school district takes incredible care of both teachers and students.  I feel really lucky to teach here.  Even with all that is available, you do have a point, many kids still do not know proper use of a keyboard.

I made my daughter take keyboarding in HS this year. It bothers
me to watch her type on the pc to her friends 1 finger at high speed.
I do think the schools are getting better at starting them earlier. When I was in school we didn't have computers. We took typing in HS.  LMAO

I took typing in High School too and averaged 56 words per minute but I could never do the whole home row thing the way they wanted. I use three fingers on each hand and it goes from there, just as fast as ever.

Then again we were forced to take home economics too. We had the Principal come in and tell us we would all be in detention if we didn't stop gunning the sewing machines, throwing needles at each other, ruining each others cooking and so on. Three of us got the standing in a line lecture. (and if I hadn't been there the others would have been taken out, I guarantee) I was on the school newspaper, All Conference football, stage and concert choir etc, and they didn't like when I showed my bad boy side but they tended to be lenient and they looked the other way for the most part.
